Two programs that Northwestern fans love to hate. Make your Sophie's Choice.

It is hard not to root for Freeman, but it is still ND. I guess it would be better for Northwestern if the Big Ten team wins, but it is still OSU. Sigh. I guess choose OSU since they looked unstoppable.

I don’t think the timing of the Natty was thought out very well. It’s the hangover after a huge weekend of NFL division playoffs, and it’s on Inauguration day. Maybe go to 8 teams and finish a week earlier?

This is a season when it was clear at the beginning that Ohio State had superior talent bought and paid for by NIL. But they would have never been in the national championship game if not for the new playoff format. What this means for the future of the college game is unknown. It definitely is a big win for the B1G. Although it doesn’t look grand at the moment, I think we are in the right conference to come out better. We will make tons from the media contract. We will do great with our shares from the bowl contracts. A nationwide B1G conference should help our recruiting. Get a bunch of graduate transfers each year and we can field decent teams. So, I like our chances if they make good financial decisions.

Just Gary, I think you are right on NU's future but they aren't there yet. The players are gravitating to the P4 and the money. There are enough good players around for NU to get its share. I think getting graduates with experience on balance is better than getting a player with more years left unless teams can tie the player up for multiple years. From what I can tell most players are cut throat on playing for the most money so one and done will be common. I don't think NU needs all stars to compete, just players with solid experience. Won't win national championships but no one is expecting that anyway. Lord, what a different world and ugly environment football has become.

It may be an ugly environment, but how many fans did NOT tune in to watch last night?

I don’t believe players automatically take the highest offer. I believe you need to make a competitive offer. It’s like any of us looking around for new employment, I know I didn’t jump for more money if the situation was right. We have plenty of money if used wisely, to put to together a team that doesn’t get run over by Michigan. After the distribution of revenue is turned over to schools later this year, I don’t want any lame excuse on why we are 3-9 or complaining about the state of college football. My biggest fear is the motivation to be excellent from the President , BOT etc. Afterall, we can become like the Cubs, revenue still comes even when the team doesn’t perform.

Not to mention MLK Day with all of the local competing events.

However, on the other hand that might have been a plus for others who had the day off and would otherwise have still been at work when the game started in the Pacific and further west time zones.

From a purely mercenary point of view I assumed that Ohio State winning would put more dollars in Northwestern's coffer, but apparently all of the final four playoff teams each got 6 million to share with their conferences but the the final game only adds revenue to pay for the costs of the game to the two respective schools. No big bucks for the winner apart from that. (Correct me if I am wrong, but that was my take from a brief Google search.)

Assuming the above to be correct the BIG10 came out pretty good considering we had two teams in the final four with the SEC getting none.

I called it ugly because the typical fan now spends more time talking about money and poaching players than the game of football. To your point, however, I think that the money and the uncertainty from year to year are two of the bigger reasons why the game is more popular than ever.
