Penn State looked good early, Dainja missed a bunch of layups, and Illinois expended a lot energy to make it close at the half. Come on, use up lots of energy guys!

VA does the merciful thing and ends NC’s season. It’s like euthanizing a suffering animal. It’s the right thing to do.

Watched a total of probably 15 minutes of the game and that offense. Wow. It is painful to watch. It’s like a master class on bad decisions.

I feel sorry for Pete. He deserved better.

As a person Pete deserved better but sadly his basketball ability was crystal clear. He did not make last year’s team better.

I think we go to the dance last year if our players didn’t only look for him. Now. That could be on the coaches. But it’s also the mentality of the team. This year. Every player was aligned. Team ball team defense. Team offense.

And now IL goes down. 5 lower seeds in a row win games

No he didn't.

I guess I might be a bit like a SEC fan, maybe it is because I follow LSU (family reasons), but we as Northwestern fans are often too nice and meek. If a kid left LSU for NC or Duke my God goodness gracious he would be hounded. His family would be attacked, bricks thrown the the window. Tires slashed.

Now okay, relax, relax, that is nuts and I am not suggesting we should or would do garbage like that, cmon it's a game.

But why are we so nice? Two great players left us and we are cool about it?

I am not cool about it. I am sorry but I am pissed off those two guys left. I consider that traitorism.

I do not wish personal "real life" harm to befall either one.

But why are so many of us like "well thanks, we wish them the best".

I wish him them the worst. They should have stayed for the purple if they want my love.

Again - and I must emphasize this - I do not wish either of them anything bad in "real life". I am not that crazy. Good luck in real life. I am not some unhinged loon.

But when it comes to basketball -- eff you and your North Carolina and your Duke dreams.

Suffer.

First: we Will absolutely have our hands full with PSU. This will be a tough matchup like last time, and I hope we win to make our first BTT semifinals in history.

Pete Nance is a big boy and has his NU degree. He went to UNC and had a worse season than last year, and they missed the tournament. There is nothing to feel sorry for. He got paid.

Meanwhile, our time is shining and will make the dance.

I certainly am happy for our team and still wish Nance all the best as I do all Cats. But I am curious if we would have had this much success if he had stayed in Evanston.

No, We made them in 2017 but we'd like to forget the result (a spanking by Wisconsin)
Yikes. I’ve wiped it from my memory.

If the Cats play like they did against Rutgers last game, they should win soundly today. Their defense is very, very good and we had four double-digit scorers.

I convinced myself very quickly that afternoon that we didn’t want a schedule conflict with the Welsh-Ryan watch party the next day.

I think MN can help solve Pickett. Use him for the post double we often see and help keep Chase or Boo out of foul trouble.
Pickett wasn't the problem in Evanston as we actually held him in check. It was some of the other guys, primarily Wynter and Funk, that hurt us.

Penn State is a tough matchup for us on the defensive end. They don't have much of an inside presence, which I think actually works against us because our calling card on the defensive end has been doubling the post. That's not something you can really do against PSU since they are so deadly from the 3 point line.

While I believe that the post double has been the main strategical ingredient that has driven our success this year, I would stay away from it tonight and play more straight up. Continue to switch on screens and make them beat you more by driving than doubling anyone who gets in the lane and kicks it out for an open 3. Funk especially has such a quick release that you can't afford to leave him at any point or he will make you pay.

Pickett had 11 assists. He'd get into the paint and kick it out for open 3's.
I'd say Pickett hurt us pretty badly.
Wynter was deadly and Funk and Lundy also played pretty well.

Yeah, "held him in check" is relative. Thought he was outstanding in that game even though we "stopped" him scoring-wise.

Sure, and maybe I worded that incorrectly. He's an All-American level player, so he is going to have a big influence on the game no matter what. He's going to get his. Considering what he's done to other teams, I feel we did a pretty job against him and forced him to dish it off and make other players beat us.

I just feel that this time around we should play him a little more straight up, put Audige on him and see if he can limit him on his own with minimal defensive help. The reality is that PSU is one of the better offensive teams in the conference and they shoot it extremely well (2nd in FG% and 2nd in 3 point %). You can't give them open looks or they will make you pay. We will need to have at least a reasonably good offensive night or we will lose. There's no way around that.

Last year NU was not competitive and showed little promise of getting competitive. For 5 years, the team has been that way

You must work pretty hard to find resentment for players that want to try their luck elsewhere after all that.

This year, NU is competitive and could continue to get better next year. So no one will leave.

We were actually competitive last year. We had a tournament-calibre roster. Just couldnt put it together and lost a bunch of winnable games.

Nance and Young both graduated from NU, then moved on. Both were justified in doing so and were classy on the way out the door.

It is really petty to want them to fail. Like "off the charts" petty. Especially when we're having such a good season.

Both Iowa and PSU 3-bombed us to win the first game, but that $%^& can be defended better. When NU defenders got on top of the Iowa 3-bombers in the rematch, all of a sudden they missed a bunch and NU tore them up. PSU may have displaced Iowa as the best 3-bomb shooters in the conference, but this time NU knows what to expect and they've got the coaches that know how to defend against it.

As the post season continues, the pressure on NU fans will continue to grow and we'll spirits need to guide our spirits on. I recently received a bottle of Outerbridge Original Sherry Pepper Sauce with a cocktail recipe that has made it a level easier to watch NU hoops: 4oz dark rum (Myers preferred), 1 cup OJ, 1 cup pineapple juice, 1/4 cup grenadine, 2 tsp sugar, 1 tsp Outerbridge. Can't find the alcohol in a chem lab. Smooth as greased owl ^%$#. Larger hits of rum make it even better. Best to make 6 or so at a time. Prepare.

Is it petty if I want them to play really really well, but still lose?

Holland and Gato:

this is an interesting dilemma. or is it dilemna?
A Coach K - led Duke team was an automatic "root against" So was Roy Williams.
But they're gone and the NCAA disrespected both teams last year with their "pseudo-scientific" NET Ratings. And the NCAA got humbled.
So I have found myself rooting for the two ex-NU guys and their teams.

But I understand the sentiment.

Just out of curiosity, what is the problem with Roy Williams? I always thought most people liked him, at least compared to most coaches.

My brother went to Kansas and couldn't stand him when he was coaching the Jayhawks. Claimed he was a cheater who tried to cover it up with a religious "Aw Gee Whiz, Shucks, Dadgummit" facade.
He also blamed him for bringing in incredible talent and not being able to win it all.
His behind the scenes negotiations with UNC in 2000, where it was announced that he was taking the job, then decided to stay at Kansas only worsened the situation. Over the next couple years he got the Athletic Director fired, leading to this statement...

"This is a sad day for college athletics when a basketball coach has the power to hire and fire a university's athletic director...He had the choice to either crush me with his power of influence or let me fly with my visions for a better total program. He chose to crush me."

Then Gosh darn it, two-faced Roy left Kansas.

Couldn't you ask the same about Coach K? What do people have against Coach K besides the fact that his teams were always good?

The problem with Coach K was that every NCAA tournament for the past 25 years has been a strokefest for him. his program was strong enough without CBS and ESPN and whoever else doing his PR and recruiting for him. Plus he recruited monsters like Laetner and Grayson Allen and abject morons like flat-earther Kyrie Irving while pretending to be better than everyone else.

Didn't we make it to Sat in 2016/17? Now let's make it to Sunday

This.

It’s important to note that Pete graduated in four years, the covid year is an anomaly. While it didn’t work out in Evanston, pulling against former players who represented NU well? I don’t get it (outside of head to head match ups).

Odd tangent.

Of course, if the Cats had a chance to get Laettner and Allen, I'd bet you'd (and everyone else) be all for it. Same with Irving. Coach K was better than everyone else, and deserved the accolades from CBS, ESPN, and any other outlet. If NU had a dynastic coach like him, we'd be hated and despised, instead of being good 'ol try-hard Northwestern, until we beat IU and suddenly we're cheating villains. I guess that's how things work. Not long ago, our women's LAX team was hated and called The Evil Empire by other LAX programs when we were winning 5 in a row championships and 7 out of 8. It goes with the territory.
