I initially didn't plan to provide an analysis because the game wasn't broadcasted on BTN+ or ESPN+. However, after watching the game, I believe it is worth discussing; the victory was truly remarkable and the atmosphere at Welsh Ryan Arena was electric, making it a joy to watch. This game has the potential to be remembered as one of the best college basketball matchups of the season. I cannot emphasize enough what an outstanding win it was.

Compared to last year, Purdue has undoubtedly become a stronger team. They have retained arguably the best player in college basketball and their backcourt has shown significant improvement. Consequently, they are considered one of the top teams in the country. Northwestern University's strengths align closely with Purdue's weaknesses. Buie showcased his ability to dominate any opposing backcourt. Northwestern's ability to make critical shots and create numerous turnovers greatly supported them, especially considering their struggles with rebounding. However, the way Northwestern protected the ball and forced turnovers on the other end was truly amazing to watch.

Overall, the officiating was relatively fair. Calling a game involving a player like Edey, who possesses exceptional talent and size, can be challenging. Superstars often receive favorable calls, and Buie also manages to get away with certain actions. However, I do wish the officials would call three seconds on Edey. Northwestern played a physically strong game, refusing to back down defensively and shooting exceptionally well in the second half. It is worth mentioning that their free throw performance still has lots of room for improvement.

Buie
Min 43, Pts 31, Ast 9, Reb 4

Buie displays exceptional skill defensively in passing lanes this season. He possesses finesse in getting to and scoring with his right hand. Additionally, Buie exhibits skill in attracting fouls and earning trips to the free-throw line. It's amazing how during offensive struggles he manages to draw fouls consistently. Undeniably, Buie stands out as the most outstanding guard in the B1G conference. He has consistently progressed each passing year donning the NU uniform. In his freshman year, he showcased his ability to penetrate and shoot 3-pointers. Transitioning into his sophomore year, he transformed into an excellent facilitator, impressively avoiding turnovers and delivering remarkable passes. Furthermore, his shot selection significantly improved in his junior year. In his first senior season, he excelled at getting to the foul line and finishing at the rim. In his second senior year, his defensive prowess in the passing lanes truly shines. It amuses me how, before the game, the announcers projected a close matchup between Jones and Buie in terms of skill, yet later they lavished praise on Edey. Nonetheless, Buie successfully proved himself as one of the nation's top guards this year.

Berry
Min 35, Pts 21, Ast 4, Reb 2

Berry initiated the game with an outstanding offensive performance. He managed finish a breakaway layup off a Buie steal, and had a splendid lob to Nicholson early. When Berry exhibits proficiency in 3-point shooting, it significantly elevates the team's performance. Furthermore, he serves as NU's most formidable perimeter defender and showcases remarkable rebounding skills for a guard. Even when his shooting might not be on point, his defensive contributions remain consistently stellar. During this game, his shooting performance was exceptional, contributing to NU's triumph. NU’s ceiling as a team is really elevated when Berry shoots as well as he did.

Barnhizer
Min 37, Pts 8, Ast 2, Reb 5

Brooks encountered difficulty scoring throughout the game. However, he compensated for this through his remarkable defensive efforts and adept ball movement, demonstrating astute basketball IQ. Although these contributions may not necessarily appear on the stat sheet, it is imperative for skilled players to impact the game even in the absence of scoring. Brooks emerges as a physical player, consistently executing numerous hustle plays. His intelligence and high energy on the court are notable attributes. While I do not particularly like the buzzcut hairstyle, it is certainly an improvement from his previous odd bowl cut fade hybrid.

Langborg
Min 42, Pts 20, Ast 2, Reb 4

Langborg's exceptional shooting skills this season are truly a blessing, as they greatly enhance the potential of this team. His ability to make clever passes sets him apart, making him arguably the second-best passing guard on the team. In particular, his first-half assist to Preston, executed amidst heavy traffic, was quite impressive. Langborgs ability beyond the arc adds a whole dimension offensively that last year's team sorely missed. It was great to see his shots fall tonight. Langborg’s and Berry's contribution in the scoring column helped lead the team to victory.

Nicholson
Min 12, Pts 2, Reb 2, Ast 1

Nicholson deserves recognition for his solid defensive performance against Edey, who is an incredibly dominant presence on the court. Nicholson consistently displayed his defensive prowess throughout the game, forcing Edey to work hard for his points and made some of the entry passes very difficult.

Clayton
Min 4, Pts 0, Ast 1, Reb 0

Clayton effectively managed the offense while Buie was on the bench, precisely meeting NU's needs coming into this season. His competency in running the offense without compromising on defensive capabilities was exactly what was required. Admittedly, Clayton had a few defensive mishaps during the game, but against a formidable team like Purdue, such lapses are somewhat expected from a freshman.

Preston
Min 19, Pts 4, Ast 1, Reb 3

Preston deserves praise for his commendable performance, considering the significant height disadvantage against Edey. By the end of the game, he seemed to have successfully gotten into Edey's head, with his steals proving to be crucial plays. Furthermore, the entire team should be acknowledged for their effective strategy in making entry passes to Edey as challenging as possible. This was especially evident during overtime, where Preston's steals exemplified their defensive efforts.

Hunger
Min 14, Pts 6, Ast 2, Reb 5

Hunger exceeded expectations and performed admirably despite his lack of experience, especially when matched up against one of the top players in the country. Despite accumulating five fouls, Hunger played well and his minutes were crucial, especially considering the foul trouble our larger players faced in this game. He displayed a remarkable amount of energy on the court. While it wasn't a flawless performance, Hunger gave his all and more. I am excited to see his growth within the team over the next 3-4 years.

Martinelli
Min 19, Pts 0, Ast 0, Reb 1

Martinelli consistently brings a high level of energy to his game. He was successful in winning several contested balls during the match. He played within the team's system and made smart decisions without forcing anything. However, he still struggles in defense and was likely not the best choice for doubling Edey in the post. Nonetheless, he is an excellent scoring option coming off the bench and possesses great strength in his left hand even though he was scoreless in this one. I am aware that he is left-handed, his right hand is basically nonexistent.

Overall, the game was incredibly entertaining. The team shot exceptionally well in the second half, and the defense was on point. This victory will probably be the best of the entire season for NU, and it proves that they have the ability to compete against any team in the nation on a given night. It's important to remember that although NU won't win every game, they have the potential to secure victories whenever they step on the court.

The accomplishments that Collins has achieved for this program are truly extraordinary. He has managed to lead completely different rosters and coaching staffs to two tournament appearances, all for a program that had never before made it to the tournament. What is often overlooked is the significant development that has taken place under his leadership. Take Olah and Nicholson, for example. When they first joined the team, they didn't possess many natural basketball skills outside of size. However, through Collins' guidance, they were able to transform into skilled and dependable players. Nicholson, in particular, has become one of the better post defenders in the B1G. Buie, a guard who was overlooked during recruitment, has also experienced tremendous growth under Collins' mentorship. He is now widely regarded as the top guard in the B1G, showcasing exceptional facilitating abilities, scoring prowess, and above-average defensive skills. The players consistently improve year after year under Collins, and witnessing their progress is truly a beautiful sight, especially when the entire team fully commits to the program. Furthermore, having a player like Buie, who possesses such a positive attitude and contributes to building a strong team culture, has made the process of cultivating a winning mindset much easier for Collins. This, in my opinion, was his biggest challenge, learning how to sustain a strong culture even after experiencing success and managing egos. Throughout his tenure, Collins has implemented similar offensive and defensive strategies. However, it's important to note that people often attribute success to tactical choices only when shots are being made and games are being won. In reality, it boils down to the capabilities and efforts of the players. This year, the team under Collins' coaching is the most offensively talented team he has ever worked with at NU. I am eagerly anticipating the rest of the season because this NU team is truly thrilling to watch. Go cats!

Bears repeating. Could be the greatest win of all time for NU Men's Hoops.

The crowd surely brought the home court advantage and got good and crazy by the end. Congrats to those who attended. Whatta moment!

What next?
1.) vs. scUM to clinch the 1st ever tourney appearance
2.) vs. #1 Purdue at Welsh Ryan Arena
3.) vs. #1 Purdue at Welsh Ryan Arena

Hunger taking 3 3pt shots shows CC has given him the green light. He must make them consistently in practice. CC usually has a short leash for bad shots.

I see Edey going mid/late 2nd round in most NBA mock drafts. What is the knock on him? Too slow for the NBA?

If you view a replay of Friday’s game, watch Edey’s problems trying to defend Buie’s lane penetration. With the Cats’ spacing, Edey wasn’t quick enough to close out Boo before Boo could make a runner, or if he left early and challenged Boo , defend against a drop off pass to another Cat who would attack the basket. Edeycontrolled the boards, but the Cats, led by Buie’s quickness, killed Purdue in the paint. Every NBA point guard will do the same thing to him.

Too slow, unable to score except at or near the basket, and general lack of athleticism compared to most NBA big men.
Edey will get eaten alive in the NBA. The NBA no longer wants slow big men to camp out in the paint. It clogs things up and prevents your playmakers from slashing to the basket. He also will have his man constantly setting high picks when he's on defense. Since he is too slow to guard anyone other than 5's in the NBA, he will be forced into drop coverage which NBA guards eat alive.

I was surprised Clayton played. Given his challenges on defense against NIU

His first stint, picked up a foul fighting threw a screen. Gave up a wide open 3, that made it 29-16 Purdue. Cause a time out and Boo going back jn the game. But if you look, at the coaches, they were all over Ty who gave up a straight line drive and cause his teammates to help.

His second stint was also surprising. Final two minute of first half. Cannot afford to lose that period if time. NU gave up Zero points a d scored two. Which isn't bad.

Great team win and was fun to watch. Hopefully more to come.

Eddy also currently lacks the ranged shot to open up his side’s offense. I think he will get drafted, but as a project. He isn’t quick, but he seems coachable. And he might get fast ‘enough’ if he loses more weight.

Pretty important for Clayton to get as many minutes as possible this season.

Even the first two misses were not "bad shots". Hunger was open, and his stroke is very smooth for a big man. Just getting that one made three on film this early in the season will give future opponents one more thing to think about.

Don't forget actually getting a win vs OSU. That team regardless of how we were doing and they were doing, always seemed to have our number
