Rebecca M. Blank shares cancer diagnosis, step downs as president-elect of Northwestern

So does Northwestern scramble to get an interim president while they conduct another search or do they ask Morty to stay a little while longer?

Very sad news, best wishes to her and her family, and hoping for a speedy recovery

😔

Not to appear trite with an emoji, but I don't have much to say beyond that emotion.

I was talking about Morty's impact. The future is unknown.
I'm not trying to chastise anybody in particular, so please don't take it personally. Just my thought on this really sad news. There will be plenty of time to discuss the future of NU sports with the Board of trustees when the new successor is selected.

Not true. Blank was always regarded as a friend and big-time supporter of all sports at Wisconsin.

I hope she recovers and will become NU's President. It is premature to begin an active search for her replacement, even if she is completely withdrawing as president-in-waiting. If Morty needs to leave, then appoint an interim president.

I think it would really, really be best if we didn't let this thread turn into a discussion of Blank's now-hypothetical impact on NU sports.
Why? She went to Wisconsin in 2013 and was very highly regarded by the UW Madison athletic community. During her tenure, Wisconsin was very successful in a number of sports, including football and basketball. My older daughter was a diver at Wisconsin, before Blank's tenure, but was very supportive of her during her service at Wisconsin. So, we can have a debate about her replacement at NU whenever that person is named.

I just don't think a post about her very serious cancer diagnosis is the right place to rehash the debate about her potential impact on NU athletics. I agree that when a new successor is appointed we can and will have a robust conversation about their background with athletics.

Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.

Despite the aggressive nature of her cancer, let’s hope she responds to treatment.

She has her hands full fighting the cancer at this point. It takes so much out of you and the more aggressive the cancer, the harder the treatment is on the person getting it. Even if they are successful in treating it, her life is on hold for at least a year or two. I don't recall to many cases when they used the term aggressive that it was dealing with an easy to treat cancer

Also at a current age 66 or 67, I really don't see here coming back to work as a full time President as she would be age 68/9 by the time she could

I've always attributed that quote to John Lennon . . . am I wrong?

John used that quote in his song "Beautiful Boy" ( a tribute to his son Sean) which appeared on the last album he released(Double Fantasy) before his death.

However supposedly it first appeared in Reader's Digest magazine in 1957.

Very sad. She took the time and effort to respond to an email I had sent with some words of encouragement based upon the experiences of an extended family member concurrently going through similar treatment.

May her family and friends find comfort at they face the challenges of their loss.

Not sure if it was mentioned elsewhere, but NU had a moment of silence for her before the game last night.

RIP, and thoughts for her friends and family.

As you say very sad. Have to wonder what kind of cancer. When I see the picture of her with that gaunt look, I have to wonder if it was similar to what Therese went through, When you realize that it was only about 7 months from time it was announced ... It was likely they knew a month or two earlier but hard to imagine much more than that. All in alll, pretty quick. Have to figure that she had regular medical exams, she had interviewed for and gotten a new job and there was no indication that this was a reoccurance so you have to think that all those things would not have been happening if she was already battling it. So the whole thing was likely pretty sudden.

All cancers are a b***h but certain ones are a special place in h**l and this seemed to be one of them
