Rebecca M. Blank shares cancer diagnosis, step downs as president-elect of Northwestern

The only thing worse are those diseases that take you slow but keep your brain intact.

Parkinsons.

Huntington's (worse than Parkinsons if you can believe it).

There are more.

They are different and traumatic but not sure you can say worse. You can at least have time with the person. THerese's father had Parkinsons for 40 years or so. Therese Pancreatic Cancer. He had many good years after diagnosis but with her it robbed her of everything in very short order. And the treatments were pretty bad.

ALS may be one you are thinking of as well Though that tends to take people more quickly

Yes. My wife has Frontotemporal Lobe Demetia now for ten years and is relatively young. She is also a two time Breast Cancer Survivor. They are insidious diseases and it's amazing the punishment a human body can take. A 51 year old male acquaintance of mine was recently diagnosed with FTD and ALS. Very sad. Prayers for all those afflicted and their loved ones.

The similarity is that in all these things, in one way or another people are taken from us way to early in dfferent ways that are all painful

When people we care about or admire pass on too soon, I immediately think about all the good they did. How they directly and indirectly touched the lives of others. And I choose to be grateful.

When the pain and sadness of chronic illness strikes, I am reminded that suffering + faith is an express lane to eternal salvation.

And whether it be these or other painful times my spirits are always lifted by the knowledge that my best moments in life have often been rooted in the crosses I have carried. Some by choice, some by the dark imposition of others and still others by the random luck of the draw.

We should all mourn the random and often devastating nature of cancer. But let me suggest we also celebrate what was surely a decades long legacy of Rebecca making a significant difference in the lives of others.

Dr. Blank had pancreatic cancer which typically has a dismal prognosis as it is usually not diagnosed until is somewhat advanced.

May she rest in peace
