Does anyone know what the rules are regarding players with signed LOIs when a head coach is fired? Are they automatically allowed a release from their commitment, or is it more of an ettiquite thing where schools grant release when requested? With Groce out, and Crean's seat getting uncomfortably hot, I wonder if this could be relevant for NU recruiting. IU has a couple of guys that had NU offers. No offers for UoI signees, perhaps due to academics, but might be worth revisiting.

I have no knowledge of any intent for any player to reconsider their commitment. I'm just still thinking about one or two open spots on next year's roster and wondering how these might still be filled.

Schools do not have an obligation to release players from their LOI but most do. And the timing of the release differs from case to case. An athletic director can inform the family of a recruit that the incoming student athlete will be released after they meet with the new coach. I believe this is what was done when Carmody was fired, Collins and Phillips met with Sina's family and Taphorn's family.

Illinois has an impressive recruiting class so there's little doubt that each recruit has been contacted by numerous schools since Saturday when the Groce firing was announced.

Are they allowed to contact until recruits have actually been released or would they have to wait until the athlete contacted them since they have signed the LOI?

It's a great question and a great point. The honest answer is I don't know.

And if the answer is that they are not allowed to contact recruits I would still stand by my last sentence.
