Imagine my surprise when the guy sitting two seats down from at the game is wearing a purple kilt. I looked at my blood traitor Illini son as was like, I have to introduce myself to this guy because he put a picture of himself on the message board this morning. So I introduced myself and we started chatting and realized we overlapped at NU by a few years. We started playing "do you know this guy or that guy" and realized that his buddy and I share a common close friend who we were both texting - NU alums are a very very small group. What ensued was 2 hours of 3 NU alums and one Illini alum having a total blast, the kind of exuberance that only fanatics for NU sports can share - the kind that leaves my wife with her head in her hands when I act this way at games - including hugs and chest bumps during the amazing last 4 minutes of the game (I just stood there in shock during the last minute and 1/2 at what was playing out in front of my eyes). And this unbelievably happened in the pristine setting of the Wilson Club. The last time I had an experience like this was in the second half of the Outback bowl (damn you Demos!) but there I befriended an awesome group of Auburn fans.

This was a top 5 sports moment for me (No. 1 will always be when NU took the field in the Rose Bowl in '95 while I sat in my seat at midfield with my dad and we both cried tears of joy).

My other message, don't waste your time getting into personal attacks with people on this board. We are, at the end of this day, a small family of fanatic NU fans who share a bizarre and often unrewarded love of two programs that have struggled for years. But those struggles make the moments like Sunday that much better. The purple kilt wearing guy will always be the guy just as crazy as I am (actually moreso) who I got to share a magical NU sports moment with. I suspect we will find each other again not so far down the road . . . we may even get over that he's a West Lot guy and I am an East Lot guy. Peace to all and damn I hope the Cats beat Indiana tomorrow!
