Though the majority of starters were not in pads and did not participate, there was plenty of action this morning in today’s scrimmage at Camp Kenosha. Here are some of the highlights:
• The play of the day occurred late in the scrimmage. With Lloyd Yates under duress, he rolled out to his right and fired a 15-yard strike on the run to a diving Ramaud Chiaokiao-Bowman for a touchdown.
• On the topic of quarterbacks, Matt Alviti played one series. He looked healthy and quick. The rest of the scrimmage featured a combination of Lloyd Yates, Aidan Smith, TJ Green and Dan Kubiak. Coach Fitz remarked in the presser that there is a battle going on for the third quarterback spot to see who will be on the bus on game day.
• There were some big hits from Brett Walsh and Jango Glackin throughout the scrimmage. The linebacker corps played with some attitude throughout the practice.
• In terms of special teams, Riley Lees was returning both kickoffs and punts. He looks comfortable fielding each and displayed some shiftiness when the plays were “live.” Granted, most of the starters were not playing, but it is interesting to note that he was doing both.
• Your Camp Kenosha all-star award goes to Chad Hanoaka. With two touchdowns and a handful of solid runs, the junior had a nice day out on the field. On one particular run, after he juked a linebacker out, the entire starting offense starting cheering on the sideline.
• Kyle Quiero was one of the only starters that got into the scrimmage. I would imagine this is to get him more reps as he takes over for Traveon Henry.
• Cameron Green got a lot of reps at superback. This may be his more natural position, as he is a pretty good blocker and does not necessarily have the speed to be a Big Ten receiver.
• The most interesting quote of Pat Fitzgerald’s press conference had to do with the team feeling disrespected about not being preseason ranked: "I think we are the only 10-win team not to be preseason ranked. I think this is more of a focused team with a chip on its shoulder. We kind of feel a little bit disrespected quite frankly."
Look for more notes and quotes at the conclusion of Tuesday’s practice.
