Got to see Marty play his last HS game tonight when his Wyoming Cowboys fell to an outstanding Kettering Alter team 35-7.

First, Marty is not 6-5 & 215lbs. But he's not far from that either. He's a solid 6-4ish and probably 200-205lbs.

The good. He throws accurate darts when he sets his feet in the pocket, on time, up to 20 yards....sideline to sideline. Definitely has a fast ball. In that 10-20 yard range his timing and accuracy is consistently good and, at times, outstanding. He is also a very good athlete with great flexibility for a guy his size. His punting showed as much raw potential as his overall QB play. Kid has both a lot of arm and leg talent. Not a bad runner either. Very much like Thorson in how and how bad he can hurt teams with his feet.

The still needs work stuff is there as well. His lack of ball security took points off the board tonight. Wyoming was set to score first, but he fumbled the ball away on the Alter 2 yard line. Later in the first half Marty again put the ball on the ground deep in Alter territory when the Cowboys had a chance to tie the game at 7 going into the half. Those are costly mistakes by your star player in the biggest game of the year. Not good. He didn't finish.

Marty also struggles when he isn't passing from the pocket with good protection. He lost significant accuracy on roll out throws. And on a screen pass that was perfectly set up to go the distance he threw the ball at the RB's feet. That was a big play waiting to happen if he just makes a decent throw. Both his confidence and his mechanics suffer under pressure. This was far and away the best team Marty has faced in his short career as a starting HS QB. It's a shame he didn't have 2-3 years of HS QB experience against better competition. I think that lack of competition and limited number of starts has a lot to do with some of the still needs work stuff.

Overall, I like the kid's size, arm talent and ceiling and am happy he'll have the opportunity to grow and develop in Evanston. Definitely not a 2 star prospect. And as critically nit picky as these observations may seem, I would still take him over 4 star Clifford from St. Xavier.

One last point. Alter has an offer now 2019 RB ... last name of Bivens I believe. Anyway, he's no. 3 in the program. And he's an obvious stud RB. Lou ... get to your sources and let us know whether he is on our 2019 recruiting board. If he's not, he needs to be.
