Starters:
S Antonio Johnson (concussion)
CB Briean Boddy-Calhoun (knee)
LB Cody Poock (ribs)
WR Drew Wolitarsky (concussion)
OL Jonah Pirsig (shoulder-returned to game)

CB Kiante Hardin (undisclosed)

I would assume some of them will be questionable/doubtful for next week. Tough break for them.

At a high-level, their game and ours look similar. Stiff challenges from MAC opponents...lots of injuries.

Our players' injuries look just as bad, worse when seen on slo mo:Meogus was a fast helmet to helmet hit; Dickerson ha his twisted leg rolled up on; Quiero had a hard shoulder hit to the QB's lower extremity and you can see the impact on his shoulder(yet Fitz says it was a broken arm), and Godwin probably knee to helmet on their QB's first run when he upended him. Hope all 4 are okay but I suspect that Quiero is out for a while as is Dickerson. The 2 head injuries are, as they say, "day to day" as they recover. Our depth will be tested. IO came back and played.

Wrassler identified the incorrect Calhoun as being on Minnesota.

Im confused. Wrassler just identified him as "Calhoun." Minnesota's Calhoun is the 91st ranked player (11th best CB) on CBS Sports 2016 draft board. MSU's Calhoun is rated the 26th best prospect (5th best DE). So it would seem that both are NFL ready players.

This is the same guy who thought Ben Johnson still played for our team a few years ago. And the MSU Calhoun is FAR more famous than Minny's Calhoun. I would call it extremely unlikely that Wrassler was referring to Briean Boddy-Calhoun

I think Dickerson was back in near the end of the game. One of the players said that Quiero was in a cast.

The one that concerns me most is Mogus as he is a long term starter and we already have a number of OL injuries. Communication is key and it makes it hard with three or more starters down.

Why not? MSU's Calhoun doesn't even play CB. TOP talked about a Calhoun at CB at Minnesota. Wrassler said he's NFL ready. As the 91st ranked prospect, that pretty much is accurate.

How many of the injured Gophers are starters?
8 total starters missing. 4 on offense and 4 on defense. 3 starters in the secondary and starting MLB. Two offensive OL, starting LT and LG although there is talk that the LT might be back. Starting TE has been out all year, huge loss as he's one of our best blockers. Wolitarsky is our best receicer, not dynamic, but quality all over.

We are banged the hell up. I feel like it'll be a close game with all the usual clichés but it'll be a tight game.

Stop trolling. GCG knew who he meant, I knew who he meant and it was most certainly Shilique.

Who's trolling, troll - it seems to me that Wrassler was referring to the CB who plays for Minnesota and is projected as an NFL draft pick. What the hell is wrong with you?

I'd like to say I feel bad for you guys, but I don't. We need this win, and we've had injury issues ourselves over the past couple of years. It'll be a tough, low-scoring game, and all I can hope is that we come out on top and that no one else gets hurt.

Agreed. Injuries are part of the game and you have been decimated the last couple years. I was just pointing out our situation. It'll be a fun game no less.

Considering Wrestler's post was in response to Algoncat mentioning Boddy-Calhoun, I don't think it's a stretch to think that's whom Wrestler was referring to. I thought GCG was just teasing him.

lol that makes sense.
We're all messed up though. On the OL basically the only guy not hurt is our C and everyone else is hobbled and we're already down 2 starters. Our starting LT and LG are out, our backup (now starting) LG is apparently at like 70% and won't be able to play full games due to a knee issue, our RG had to move to RT in the shuffle and has been hurt while our backup (now starting) RG is playing hurt too. Also our top 2 TEs are probably out for the year with both injuries apparently occuring in the last week of camp. Most of our O issues have been from the OL/TEs just not getting it done. On D we may be down 3 of our 4 starting DBs. So yea, its a little rough but that's why you get 85 scholarships I guess.

You guys have a terrific defense and I suspect this will be a very close game. The Cats have to throw the ball effectively to loosen up your defense.

Our D is interesting in that it's often more susceptible to the run than the pass. With the secondary banged up I'm really not sure what we'll see. We'll still have 2 good corners with Murray who's been about as close to an island as you see in CFB and Myrick who is essentially a starter since he's the field corner in nickel which we now play 70% of the time and he is much improved as a jr. But we're missing our safeties and BBC who is our inside CB in nickel so there's a lot of potential for NW to gash us over the middle

IMO your defense is predicated on stopping explosion plays. The run defense seems to suck it up when it has to. NU is basically a run offense and BIG DC's will try to take this away. They will want to make Thorson beat them with his arm and hope he throws picks. This is going to be a hard hitting game. Minn is a good team.

Yea they'll definitely focus on stopping the run, I just don't know if we'll be successful enough to make NW one dimensional. That said I think this is a matchup between 2 good defenses and two bad to mediocre offenses (we're the 'bad' one) so it'll probably be a low scoring, close game as I don't think either team really has the firepower to run away with it. Could be one of those games where a ST play makes the difference like last year.

That's fantastic news! Yes, I know, I'm being a smart ass, and I really don't cheer for injuries. But I do want to beat Minnesota this year, particularly after the disappointing losses the two past seasons. We had that game last year....and then that stupid kickoff return for a TD....still makes me mad.

I don't think we have a bad offense. I just don't think our offense is that good right now. But these two teams are pretty similar right now.

Can you give us a scouting report on the Gophers?

I'll give it a shot. Defensively, our secondary is obviously our strength, even with the injuries we are still pretty good. I won't lie though, our injuries, especially at safety are concerning. Travis and Johnson are good, decent in coverage, really good at run support. Same goes for Boddy-Calhoun. He is vastly underrated as a tackler and he's a playmaker for us. Those losses have me worried. Linebacker play has been a bag of mixed goods, but mostly good. IMO, Lynn is our best linebacker. Poock is probably out do we'll play with an undersized MLB if he can't go which all indications at this point are he won't. So Celestine is his backup and he's athletic, but I question whether he can withstand an entire game right now. The other guy is Campbell who is an athletic freak and probably having his best year at the position, but he did have his worst game last week. Our injury issues and lack of depth are part of the reason we play nickel so much with Myrick on the outside and BBC inside. Huff is another undersized LB who we basically rush from the edge almost exclusively. He's a true freshman and probably doesn't weigh more than 220 album he's quick and gets under the tackles a lot. Our line is a lot of meh. Our best player on this side of the ball is Steven Richardson who's a short DT, but qood lord is he powerful. We struggle getting sacks, but regularly get pressure. We've been good defensively outside of last week where we had a bad half and the buckled down on the second half. Cockran is our best edge rusher on the line and Keith is starting to piece it together as well. But run defense can be sketchy at times.

Offensively we are a little weird. If you listen to the prognosticators we are one dimensional only, yet we've averaged close to 35 pass attempts a game. Leidner is an average QB but an elite leader. He's currently 5th in the conference in passing yards, but last or near the bottom in efficiency. We've started to do some things now to open the passing game for us, but it all comes back to the running game. If we can't run the football, we can't do shit. Smith is a really good back, but he isn't strong enough yet to be a truly effective back so he needs that complimentary back. That's why Brooks playing and doing well last game is big for us. They are different backs and will compliment each other well. Linger is our only good TE right now that has a lot of experience and who's an effective blocker. He doesn't get many looks right now, but he can be used as a receiving option. Wide outs are a mixed bag. This is easily the most talent we've seen under Kill at the position, but there still isn't a lot of experience there and they mostly all suffer from an occasional case of the drops. Maye is our biggest playmaker in the unit from the slot. He's actually fairly effective down field too as he has decent speed, but he drops too many damn passes. Wolitarsky is one of the outside receivers. He isn't a blazer but he has decent speed and is probably our "best" receiver. Carter has the best hands and is slowly becoming our best receiver and he's the other outside guy. We have two freshmen in Still and Gentry that have shown flashes but Gentry is probably the most talented guy in the entire position group right now and will likely see an expanded role. OLine is currently a MASH unit. I don't know a thing about OLine play. What I can tell you though is that they played their best game last week. I'm more inclined to think it had more to do with the game plan than it did with health as they are still really banged up.

Sorry it was very long winded, but that's my best shot

Sorry it was very long winded, but that's my best shot

I can clarify a few things here starting with the O:
- Leidner is an inconsistent guy. So far this year he's been up and down but has been more consistent with the shorter passing game the last few games but just terrible on deep balls which is the complete reverse of last year. He's rarely ran this year but he can run decently and every few games we'll go read option crazy and he'll have 15 carries.
- I already talked about the OL mash unit. Due to those injuries they haven't been very good this year but did pick it up some last week. If they can open up some holes in the run game it will really help the pass pro. We run a lot of power and inside zone and the OL has been struggling making 2nd level blocks
- RBs are solid. Smith has been very good so far as a FR as he's a quck, explosive guy with good vision and instincts. He does need to get stronger as he's literally been a slapped thigh away from 2-3 TDs this year as he's allowed himself to be tripped up due to a lack of lower body strength but he does run hard. Brooks has played one game and showed good lateral quickness and strength but its one game so who knows.
- TEs are decimated with our top 2 out for the year and our best remaining guy Lingen in and out of the lineup. He's solid when he plays. Wozniak is a 6'10" kid that's been up and down as a blocker but has been solid as a receiver. After that we're playing 2 walk ons that have played well but aren't big threats in the passing game or '6th OL' types
- At WR, Maye has been our best WR and he plays outside and not the slot as Wolitarsky, though a big WR, has been playing out of the slot. Those 2 and Eric Carter are the top 3 WRs but none are overly explosive but all are solid underneath. Maye is a nice double move guy so he can get behind a D and has decent speed but Leidner hasn't been able to hit him often. there are 3 frosh WRs with the size and speed to be dangerous but haven't put it all together yet in Still, Holland and Gentry. Gentry had a big play last week and was the best of those guys and probably one of our top WRs in camp but he got hurt late and just got back in the mix last week.
Overall its hard to say what to expect on O because our O is so gameplan specific. We may go tempo, may slow it down and go smash mouth, may take a bunch of deep shots or may attack underneath and horizontally. This means that sometimes there's a great gameplan and effective playcalling, other times we look stuck in mud. However everything is dependent on the consistency of the OL and QB which is kind of 'duh' but its so true in our case.

On D we're a stop the run and keep everything in front of us D. At the same time our DC doesn't like to sit back and let the O dictate things and runs a lot of man and pressures out of a basic cover 4 look. Our DBs being hurt is problematic because our safeties are a big part of what we do as well as the nickel back. We give those guys a lot of 1 on 1 coverage responsibilities down the field and like to get creative with the coverages so miscommunication by inexperienced guys can hurt
- DL has been solid. Richardson at DT is the best guy and he's a mini Aaron Donald. He's consistently disruptive and demands a double team. Our other starting DT Scott Ekpe was out last year with an ACL and is getting back into form and making some plays. He's not huge at about 280 but he's a nice athlete. DEs have been good but haven't gotten many sacks. Cochran, Hank Ekpe and Alex Keith rotate there. They'll rush and also drop into coverage at times. They've been solid against the run on the edge as well
- LBs have been solid too. Starters are Poock in the middle (he'll play) and he's a solid, instinctual guy. Lynn at WLB is probably our best LB all around with good size, instincts and speed, and Campbell is the most athletic and has been more consistent this year. We'll also play 2 sophs in Celestin and Williams who are both thumpers. Williams is the slowest of the bunch but is good against downhill running teams. The guy that's made the most plays is the true frosh Huff as he's been used as a stand up rush end and as caused havoc
- Our DBs were legitimately one of the best 10 secondaries in the country IMO. Murray is a man coverage lock down guy and teams shy away from him. Myrick is the other outside CB and is basically a starter since we're usually in nickel and he's really turned into an above average coverage guy this year though he's susceptible to jump balls. If Johnson plays he's a thumper of a Field Safety with decent coverage skills. Boddy-Calhoun is a playmaker and a really good cover corner who now plays mainly nickel. IMO Travis was our most important player as he was a versatile safety that could cover the slot and also play as a 3rd LB in the box. With him out Ace Rogers is the guy and he's more of a S/CB hybrid so it will be interesting to see how we play in our nickel packages as last year we went with a 3 safety look often but with Travis out and Myrick's improvement we've gone more 3 cbs. With Boddy-Calhoun questionable it'll be interesting to see what we do there as well as we have a bunch of inexperienced guys behind him.

We have some of the same issues. Three OL starters down and two of the top three safeties though one of each might be back.

Thanks you two guys for the Minny intel. Great stuff! Sorry to hear about all the injuries. Similar to what we saw last year--just a tidal wave of guys getting hurt.

It sounds like there are some similarities to Duke on defense. They have an elite secondary (but theirs is fully healthy) that excels in coverage and run support (their AA safety Cash gave us fits). Their front 7 was smallish but quick, and kept us flummoxed up for nearly 3 quarters before we got a lead and started to wear them down on a hot, humid day.

You need to calm the **** down.

Me calm down? I write a very reasonable and calm post noting that Wrassler's comment fits very nicely with the description of the Minnesota CB (and I will point out that I was not the only one to notice this - dkecat and algoncat both had the same reaction), and I'm accused of trolling? mikewebb goes after half of this board claiming they are trolls for posting their opinions on a message board. It's not me that needs to be calming the **** down.

From what I've seen Julian Huff has been playing very well.
Better make sure you know where he is lined up in throwing situations.

Wow. Your analysis is more detailed (and more informative imo) than most of the weekly Q&A reports served up from beat writers from the opposition. Thank you. As if the injuries aren't bad enough, it looks like graduation also took its toll on Minny, as David Cobb won't be suiting up for the Gophers, a player that I always admired and enjoyed watching in action against programs other than Northwestern.

Agreed, just silly stuff, and I apologize to everyone for indulging ECat and Stupor, I should know better.

You're a piece of work, and no, you don't know better. If you did, you wouldn't have made this post the way you did. What's wrong with just saying you're sorry and not bringing me or Stupor's name into it? Now, I don't know if you're just intentionally baiting or if you just can't help yourself.

I was discussing a post by Wrassler, which had zero to do with you and Stupor. But you were the ones who chose to interject. If Wrassler disputed the conclusions of I or GCG, he certainly would not have been shy about posting a response. I apologized to the board for continuing this silly discussion by responding to you guys posting about an issue that had nothing to do with you, and I am done now.

I didn't know that I wasn't allowed to participate in a discussion that you were involved in, and that a thread becomes private and unwelcoming of new contributors once you posted. But, thanks for the clarification and it won't happen again. I'll be sure to watch myself next time.

I'm just curious why you didn't call dkecat or algocat a troll - or how my post was any different from their sense of confusion about gcg's conclusion that wrassler was talking about someone else. You can disagree with me, but there is no need to accuse me of trolling, and certainly no basis to attempt to turn this around on me suggesting I'm the one who started this drama.
