This is all on Fitz. I am not saying the impossible that he should get canned, but he deserves the heat.
To all the recruiting geniuses that say last years Championship would help our recruiting next year...finally stop saying stupid crap with no basis in fact just to hide Fitz from criticism and subpar recruiting year after year. We should do better after immediately good seasons and usually fail to capitalize on the success. We also failed to do enough in the transfer department. For the love of God...Only the blind or true wishful thinkers couldn't see we needed an OL that could compete right away!
Its never a good idea to depend on big guys that are coming back from season long injuries. They never comeback better, rarely become starters and sometimes never comeback. So if an OL has a major surgery and is lost for the year...Why do people think a guy that won't even be able to lift a weight for many months and can't practice for a year will suddenly be a contributor the next season? I never understand it.
When the announcers said our impact players on defense before the game were Spivak and Bergin...it says a little about our coaches getting solid walk-ons and our coaches also not being able to recruit well enough at the exact same time.
Not sure Hilinski is any better than HJ, but still giving the QB's a break. The OL is still a disaster and absolutely Nobody could be good behind it. Coach Jake called a ridiculous play where Hilinski fumbled at the goal line. He doesn't get as much criticism as Oneil but probably should. The wideouts have been good, TE and backs OK...and yet our passing attack still sucks. Hilinski being a statue back there doesn't help, but not sure anyone could do something with this talent. We scored 7 points against Nebraska...sheesh.
In the many years I have been a fan...never have i seen a really successful screen pass at NU...even on the few times we complete the pass, our linemen fail to block anyone. Our poor pass blocking should lend to successful screens...never really does.
The DC looks to be a disaster, but if he goes, so should Tim Mcgargle! Who cares if he went to NU! It's about producing in both recruiting and player development. The linebackers not named Bergin have been horrible! Now at least I know why he didn't develop any or give anyone besides the big 3 a meaningful down last season. They are slow, take poor angles, can't get off blocks and sometimes are just poor tacklers. And those are the starers! I can't imagine what the backups would look like. Coach Hank was a good DC with good talent...Don't think he would have good enough talent to look good this year.
The DB's have been above average, but the corners are small and not physical and the safety spot opposite Joseph has been...rough. How Azema overran the opening pass is beyond me.
We can still win some games although the 7 wins and a bowl I hoped for don't look very good.
I would still have taken Adrian Martinez in a second over any other QB transfer if he had decided to go to the portal. His pure talent is nothing we have ever seen at NU.
Can we ever attempt to actually block a field goal? How about having a guy or two actually get their hands up...maybe even jump? Having 4 guys off the line of scrimmage always worried about a fake is silly.
And as a frequent critic of Fitz...Now is where he will put his head in the sand, get even more pissy with fans and media, pretend he had nothing to do with the makeup of the team, the coaching staff, the recruiting and the gameplan. He will say some baloney about taking responsibility, but never really will. Wait for it.
