Students are almost nonexistent

Don't know the look and sound got on TV. What's really concerning are all of the NU 'so called fans" who sold their seats behind the basket and in the lower bowl on the north side. Gee, those folks must really need a couple of bucks, to bad.

It was a pathetic student turnout for a game with such historic implications. Just pathetic. We need to keep winning. They will come eventually. But with the geek quotient at NU double or triple what it was in decades past, it's gonna take a lot of winning to bring the nerds out in force. Half of the school doesn't even know where Welsh Ryan is!

I recently graduated and I'll say the much larger problem in our arena is that the rest of the crowd is overwhelmingly visitors. It is pretty embarrassing when our student chants get drowned out by almost any visiting crowd, and that problem will not change even if those tiny student sections are filled to the brink. You can call the students geeks all you want, but also keep in mind that this was a night with shitty weather and a weeknight. Also, even if this game has historic implications, the only reason that is really noteworthy is the futility of our program. I don't think many fans think the chance for a 4 game winning streak to bring us up to 5-10 is all that interesting. When the team is consistently competitive, you'll have more students. 3 games against relatively weak programs (until tonight) does not mean that much.

And this is why the students don't show up... It's a weeknight...

Bad weather ...

Futility....

There are other fans there...

Oh, boo hoo! We showed up droves during a historic football losing steak. We laked the posts when we won. We stormed the court when we won.
And we were A MILLION TIMES WORSE BACK THEN!

These excuses ring hollow. The students need to show up. Period.

I'm mostly taking offense to your points that:

1. This game had "such historic implications."

2. Our students are 200-300% more nerdy than "back in the day"

I'm surprised that our historic win isn't front page on ESPN, but I'm sure the Trib will make up for that slight tomorrow. And I don't know how you can be such a devout NU fan while nerd-bashing. That's kind of the epitome of our school, for better or for worse. But hey, I wasn't there, so I'll get back to my books.

(Also, for your information, most of those fans who show up every night are nerds. The cool kids are probably too busy getting laid)

All of it . NU used to eschew perfect-SAT, library-rat types that nobody at their high school even knew in favor of homecoming king/ varsity athlete types with slightly lower grades and a lot more leadership potential. I'd bet the homecoming king percentage at NU is down by 1000% from 30+ years ago. So I was low-balling you. But if you want to argue that it's a Tuesday so kids can't go to basketball games, go right ahead.

Other things that Mr. Stupor believes to be true about Northwestern circa 1980.

Party Central: free weed, wherever you looked. Seriously, Tech in 1982 had a designated clambake room.

Arts Mecca: U2 actually recorded their landmark WAR album live on WNUR, with a record release party at, I sh*t you not, Patten Gymnasium.

Architectural Haven: Foster-Walker Complex, I'll have you know, was actually designed based on found Frank Lloyd Wright designs. F-W, you see... It's code.

Breeding Ground for Young Comics: Eddie Murphy, Robin Williams, and Carrot Top (win some, lose some) used to do weekly open mic sets - on TUESDAYS, at Kafein (then, it was just called Caffeine.)

Birthplace of Hip Hop: Grandmaster Flash is actually Comm Studies, class of 84. Eric B AND Rakim were, as you'd sxpect, poetry undergrads. And Jam Master Jay dropped out, but still spun at Jones until 1986. (Then Raising Hell came out, and he couldn't handle it.)

Also, Mr. Stupor used to hang out with Mickey Rourke and Prince, just cuz they used to like the vibe in Evanston. E'town oozed cool then, not like today.

+1,000,000.

truer words...

Deny it all you want. The students don't care about sports. That's a fact. They have a million times better teams to root for, and they show up in half the numbers. Flame the messenger all you want. It doesn't change the facts.

Another fricking nerd turd!!! It's righteous to bash nerds who only care about their GPA.

It's about time NU started deducting GPA points for students who don't ever attend basketball games. Call them life point deductions.

Student section was half-empty at tipoff, but it seemed to grow as the game went on, and I thought they provided some nice energy. Given the weather, etc, I didn't think it was such a bad turnout, but maybe my expectations are low.

You didn't get laid, so what's your excuse?

The cool kids at NU are but a tiny fraction of the student population.

I thought it was pathetic especially since the tickets are free. Amen to the ones that come, but it's sad when New Trier vs. Evanston brings more students.

Are you seriously making fun of campus life back in the late 70's?

NU is a convent now compared to the late 70's!

The cleaning ladies in the '70's used to water a small forest of pot plants for students in each of the dorm lounges over breaks. Free Pot? You think that's a joke? Seriously dude, you have no F*ing clue about what campus life was like back in the '70's! You could have a bushel basket of pot and a pack of fire crackers in your room and the campus cops would storm in and commandeer only the fire crackers! You probably think I'm joking, too. I saw it happen!!!

Sheesh, I was shy as all hell and I (and perhaps half of north campus) was banging the Dean of Student Affairs daughter back then! The only difference between NU and Faber U. was no one kept a cow on campus at NU. This was our livestock...

Umm no. The fish was pretty damn big back then and we have pictures to prove it!

I understand that you are not and were never a library-rat type, Stupor, but I must understand how it's possible for something to decrease by 1000%.

I guess, perhaps, there were 100 homecoming kings in 1983 freshman class, and now there are... -900? (I can only assume that every oriental male [btw, it's appropriate to call them 'asian' now] - who didn't play high school sports - is a negative homecoming king.)

Stupor's just reeling you in, NUCat320 - wriggle free from the hook and let it alone.

I'm surprised you had time to take pictures with how awesome everything was back then.

Does your DORM offer FREE BEER every Thursday night these days?

and food, and a movie theater, and a workout facility, and blah blah blah blah blah.

The only people excited about pot and beer in college are nerd turds like you and Stupor who hadn't touched a boob and spent most of your time polishing your knob and bowling trophies until freshman year when you realized there was a whole new world out there and ended up barebacking a hirsute science nerd in the basement of Patten, leading to a nasty case of ringworm and an STD to be named later.

Sounds like an ugly personal recollection, 2011. Sorry to hear that.

Pot and beer were just effective social lubricants, my man. They might be the end all for you, though.

Good luck on the STD to be named later.

Agree wholeheartedly. But why stop there? I am an alum and an adjunct at NU.... I have a book out and almost none of the students have bought it. How can they not support one of their own, like me? They should definitely be deducted points for that. I mean, people that don't spend their time and money according to my personal tastes are just jerks and nerd turds. BTW, Glades please let me know if you plan to buy my book on Amazon or send me a check and I can send you an autographed copy.

Well this has certainly turned into a wonderful thread. Lou, your eraser is needed...

It's rather astounding that there are people on an NU sports board actually defending the fact that our students don't bother going to games played by NU teams that are a million times better than anything we saw and supported for decades. These kids are not at Carnegie Mellon or Cal tech. They chose a Big Ten school. They need to start acting like it. 2/3 full once they all finally sachay in is pathetic.

Whatever the reason, student attendance at NCAA basketball games is trending down in a lot of places.

What is astounding is that grown men and women care what the students are or aren't doing. I also loved your homecoming king % statistic - there is a rock solid stat in any debate, totally relevant, totally verifiable.

If the team keeps winning, people will show up. Young, old, whatever. It is fun to root for a winning team, much less so to root for a loser.

Interest in athletics is not a prerequisite for attendance at NU or any other institution. Nor is not attending a game on a snowy Wednesday in any way a referendum on the level of a person's fandom.

Please shut up, thanks.

Southport: do yourself a favor and quit denying the obvious. They don't show up. They have a million better reasons to show up than when we did. But because our student body has changed, these kids are different. This is a discussion board, not a structured debate. You can accept my example re: the types of students we now admit or not. Thats up to you. But if you choose to ignore it, that's just sticking your head in the sand. And if you love NU sports, sooner or later the fact that in the last 20 years or so we've accepted more and more kids who don't (and never did) give a damn about sports just might get you thinking about the future alumni base of this school and its willingness to support NU Athletics. Then maybe the lightbulb will go off in your head - and you'll realize why I won't shut up about this just bacause you don't want to hear it. Thee kids are us in 30 years and if they don't care now, they'll care even less then. There's a price to be paid for attempting to increase your academic cache by accepting one dimensional nerds and that's the price: They don't show up for games and they sure as heck won't buy season tickets or donate to the program down the road. The irony of it all, of course, is that this wouldn't be happening but for the 1995 football team! Talk about no good deed going unpunished.

This game, and pretty much every game is on TV now. It's much easier (and cheaper), to stay at home and watch the game on a flat screen TV with DVR than go to the game. College and pro sports across the country are having issues with attendance.

"I know you are, but what am I?" Classic. Sorry I hit a little too close to home for you--I'm sure she was a beautiful, special girl.

I'll gladly get you some beer and pot next time you're in town. It'll be just like the glory days.

Haven't we had one of the lowest alumni giving % and lowest season ticket holder rate compared to our peers for nigh on 30 years now? Don't see how alumni of the 60s, 70s, and 80s can get on their high horses...

Well, because I disagree with your premise. This leads me to believe it'll at worst stay the same.

Additionally, I've seen the efforts the school is undertaking in building a more cohesive campus and keeping young alumni involved and to encourage giving, which leads me to think there will be an uptick. Also, in terms of alumni giving, schools with a much larger population of nerd turds are ahead of us by ridiculous amounts. That's unrelated to sports, however.

As far as season tickets or athletic support? I think it's a winning issue.
