I felt it time to reach out directly to you. My positive memories at NU far exceed any negatives. That was in a large part because of you. I could not be more excited about the tremendous progress CC has made. Hopefully these words provide a bit of closure to a dark, disappointing time.

It has been years since I've looked at these message boards. I wrote to you all one other time when I was in the D-League. It was never a good idea to read anything on here when I was still playing. Sometimes you guys just didn't have a clue what you were talking about haha

With that jokingly said, I'll be at the Purdue game, along with other former players. I just wanted to thank you guys for sticking with NU over the years. I'm not sure how you did it every season. You knew it was going to hurt, but you never wavered. Please come and say hi if you happen to see me.

We are all starting to see the results of work put in by so many before, including Carmody. He and I had personal issues that had nothing to do with basketball (made worse at the time by the uncertainty of my mom's treatment and my foot), but as a coach, there was not a better system in which for me to play than his. He and I both made mistakes in our handling of an emotional situation and for that I apologize.

I have kept what I believe to be a respectful distance from WR over the years to help heal any wounds I caused. Dr. Phillips/CC and I have kept in consistent contact over the years and they have repeatedly welcomed me back. JP was involved in all that went on and I hope that in itself goes a small way to show that my decision was not groundless. He is a man I admire to this day.

I won't be replying, or even checking on here again. Just know how appreciative I am for your tireless support. Your time is coming next week with what should be an NCAA bid. The country will finally realize what we've known all along- There is something special about NU.

I can't wait for Sunday. I always loved playing in a packed WR but with all this M2M you run now, I'm not sure I'd get as much time lol See you soon.

'GO CATS,

Kevin Coble

Great to hear from you, and I'm thrilled you'll be at the Purdue game! I'm a big fan of your work and grateful for all you did for the team. The success of this team wasn't built in a vacuum; the foundation was built by the hard work of previous teams, including yours, that defied years of futility and proved that Northwestern can compete and win in the Big Ten. Now that you are returning to these boards as a fan of the team, let me extend a hearty welcome and just say how happy I am that we'll all be able to share in the excitement of this team's historic breakthrough.

Is there any way for Lou or others to verify the author of this? If genuine, then I am certainly glad to hear that KC is back in the family.

Thank you for checking in and for providing some really great memories. In my view, you were a student-athlete and you did what you thought was best. As a fan, I can never question that. Athletes don't owe fans anything other than giving a good effort and being good representatives for the school. I thought you accomplished both. I'm glad you had an overall positive experience. It's been a long journey for me since I started following the team in the 80's but the small victories are sweeter and the huge ones are hard to describe. As someone that contributed a lot to the program, I really hope you are enjoying this.

Thanks for writing. I really enjoyed watching you play. My seats are right across the aisle from the players' families. The parents are all great fans, but your mother is right at the top of the list. I enjoyed watching her cheer so hard, not just for you, but for the whole team. Go Cats!!

Thanks Kevin. On the chance you reconsider and take a sneak peak of our responses, let me say that your game against MSU when the Cats stunned the Spartans in East Lansing was a spectacular individual (and team) performance. Izzo and his players had no answer for you that night. Have never seen that kind of game from a tall, thin white kid other than when Larry Bird was doing his thing at Indiana State and the Pistol was doing the same at LSU. I know there were other great moments in your time at NU. But that one stands out to me. A full 40 minutes when you were as good or better than a couple of consensus all time greats.

Hope you enjoy your return.

Nice post. Hope u are doing well in all aspects of your life. I'm glad you could make it to Welsh-Ryan arena. I was there for the Rutgers game. The atmosphere was electric and you helped pave the way for this day where NU will be consistently good both on and off the court.

I always respected your right to make whatever decision you felt was best for you. No regrets! That said, it would have been fun to watch that team play with you at the 4. Enjoy the game this Sunday!

Though few of us know anything about the unpleasantness, I doubt any of us thought it was groundless. It's all way behind us now, though.

Enjoy the game Sunday with your room-ful of brothers.

Not to hi-jack the post, but why in the world would this not be legit?
Its the internet, man. All sorts of weird $hit happens here. Unless I missed something earlier, this post seems to come out of nowhere, so..... trust but verify, I guess.

No, thank you, Kevin, for all you did for the NU program. You helped pound that rock. We look forward to seeing you back at Welsh-Ryan and welcome you back with open arms.

I enjoyed watching KC play and he was definitely part of the uptick in the team's overall quality. That MSU game was outstanding!

I will definitely be looking around for various NU players from history on Sunday.

Kevin, what a fantastic, heart-felt message you posted. We all loved watching you play and hated the way your NU career ended. The wonderful memories you helped create during your time at NU will live on and to me, the success of the team during your junior season in which you took down MSU and Purdue on the road and came within a bucket of doing the same to a great OSU team, served as the biggest stepping stone between where we used to be and where we are now as a legitimate Big 10 basketball program. Have a great time Sunday and enjoy the atmosphere you helped create.

Great to read your perspective on your time at NU and your thoughts since departing the program. Seems so long ago. It is great to hear of your strong attachment to NU. I did not follow your situation closely, but I never felt in any position to judge you. Fans too easily forget that players are human beings, and that we on message boards so rarely have any understanding of the true picture. I just try to enjoy the many, many positives that my affiliation with NU brings.

Welcome back, and enjoy the game on Sunday.

I promise that any hurt feelings have long-since healed. If anything, by this point, "best player leaves the team" is a unique quirk of our blessedly-broken curse. (The 'never made the tourney' curse, that is, not what inevitably comes next...)

You were the first great NU player to choose Coach Carmody - I have no doubt that the relative success you brought here contributed to Shurna and Crawford and Cobb and Olah and Demps and Lumpkin and Taphorn signing up, and, eventually, to Law and Mc and Lindsey and Pardon and the rest of today's curse-breaking group. Without your success, I don't think any of this ever happens. So, thanks.

I'm happy you've stayed connected to NU. Hopefully, you'll be able to make it to many more games.

Go get us a win on Sunday.

Kevin,

Thank you for message and for all of your efforts to Pound the Rock even before the phrase was applied to the Cats hoops program. I remember you in BTN studio shortly after your departure and being very impressed that you could be so good on camera at that young age. It says a lot about you (and the NU athletics program) that you can use this pic as a proof of your identity. Not too many institutions can say that 95%+ of their student athletes can produce a diploma as proof of their contributions to their school.

All the best! And Go Cats!!!

Thanks for the note. Don't get me wrong. I meant no disrespect. However, people impersonating others on anonymous internet message boards is a pretty common occurrence. I didn't want to see somebody here trying to lead on this community and making the real you look bad. But, it seems like the people in the know vouch for this and your statement was certainly a very positive one. So.... I'll stop playing board lawyer.

Enjoy being back at Welsh Ryan on Sunday.

Thanks, Kevin:

1) We may be pretty wack, but I'd be surprised if anyone here didn't have the utmost respect and appreciation for the time put in by you and any NU player. Thanks to you as well as all NU players for countless hours of fun.
2) Best wishes to you and your family for many healthy, happy and successful years.

Lou, I think we found the ultimate board moderator for any Carmody debates!! Hire him! I'm sure he'd love it!

If and when you see this, Kevin ...

Never met your father but had a nice chat with your mother at the Tulsa NIT game. A class act.

May I inquire as to her current state of health? Presumably your parents are back living in Arizona now?

Hey Kevin, once you're a Wildcat you're always a Wildcat.

It'd be fun to have your perspective on these boards if/when you do want to weigh in. You have a ton of fans here, myself included. Enjoy the game against PurDon't.

Kevin...you are an example of why I am so passionate about NU athletics. At Northwestern, we have outstanding athletes but even more important, we have great people. You helped build our hoops foundation and for that we will always be grateful. Glad you have stayed connected to NU and the program. Have a great time at the game tomorrow and bring home a "W"!

Kevin, thanks for all the great memories you provided. You were always fun to watch and you brought the program to the next level. Your presence on Sunday will mean a lot to all of us who watched you and other Wildcat players over the years. I hope they invite all the former players and coaches to come on the court at halftime so that we can express our appreciation to all of you. You deserve to share in what the program is on the cusp of accomplishing. It would not have been possible without all of your efforts.

I wish you continued success in life.

"I hope they invite all the former players and coaches to come on the court at halftime so that we can express our appreciation to all of you."

I was just going to post the same exact suggestion, though I would include anyone involved with the program in a serious way (student trainers, managers, long time secretaries, etc.). They all pounded that rock.

If not that, then during one of the media timeouts the stadium announcer could simply ask "Wildcat fans, on this historic day, let's all stand and applaud in appreciation all former basketball players and coaches and team members who are here today to witness the final game...." etc. etc.

They could just stay in the stands and get a good round of applause and cheers.

I think the applause would last a very long time.

Thanks KC for all you did for us!
