is temporarily restored:

That game had two sets of rules: One for PSU, and one for NU. If there was ever a need for disciplinary action against a crew, tonight's game is Exhibit A. I don't believe in conspiracy theories, the Easter Bunny or even Bigfoot, but I believe we got completely jobbed by a crew that has no business officiating another B1G game.

WTF was that travesty of competitive sports mediation?

I have never seen so many fouls called away from the action. I have never such a disparity in what is permitted by one time and called on the other.

And the final call was a fitting and seminal clusterf@ck to seal our fate: Call a goaltend, then review it and wave it off, while also negating the putback. But at least we got possession! Thanks guys!

That was the worst officiating I’ve seen in any sporting event ever. There’s nothing even close.

Those officials cannot be assigned to us again or the fix is in
If I see them on the floor at NU ever again, I will buy every pretzel in the building, and give them to the students with the instructions to launch them at my command. Being carpet bombed by large doughy pretzels is an old Hessian war tactic that incapacitates any enemy,

Finally... the Rant Board is back! Good... we have a lot to catch up on.

Can you believe what Mitt Romney said in that second debate?!?! What a boob.

And can you believe some of these decisions from Kathleen Sebelius? Don't get me started.

Ok.... I need to pace myself here! Getting way too excited. I better go lie down.

Excited to see Jeb Bush’s campaign? (Just kidding. No one was excited about that one, not even Jeb.)

You guys are doing it wrong.

Basketball rants only. Plenty of fodder after last night. My eyes are still burning.
Fine. There's a lot of shit still to unpack from 2012 and on, but if you insist on focusing on true crimes against humanity, then we can limit this to discussing the war crime that was the refereeing last night.

The French Revolution did not start with the storming of the Bastille. It started when people felt the first pangs of hunger.

I am getting plenty hungry for good officiating.

The only other time I have seen such a foul disparity was against Purdue but that was due to Edie and NU employing a strategy to foul him and NU was trapping. Last night their were just crazy calls like the Mullins foul on the 3.

Well the fouls against Purdue were just as bad but it wasn't a strategy. Edey would post up, reach back and entangle our guys arms. Refs were dumb enough to fall for it.

But, as Bardo pointed out - Northwestern needs to back off from Ace Baldwin and make him make a jump shot. Stop getting up on him and using hands to slow him down when he tries to go by.

I thought that was a solid observation.
There are things about the NBA game I don't like, but one thing I do like is that not every slight bit of contact, especially away from the basket, is a foul. Last night, even the slightest caress was a foul.

It's a bullshit "observation" when defenders on Ace aren't even touching him and he initiates contact to draw the foul while at the same time, PSU - including ACE - are defensively putting two hands on Cats players all night long with no calls.

Bardo was just trying to find some justification for the terrible officiating he clearly wasn't willing to mention. I suspect the announcers are contractually obligated to not discuss the refs in any negative way regardless what is happening.

He could more honestly have said 'the Cats should know by now that the refs will call a foul on them if they get within three feet of Ace and they should just let him score at will to avoid more free throws.'

I am with you - and those drones on the east coast! Where are we at with them!

I loved the foul on Berry as he was running away from the play. Had no volume so guessing it was a foul for giving up on defending? That would be a fun new foul to add…

In all seriousness, only a few time did NU start running g the ball into the lane to draw contact. And got some calls. I was really hoping they would do it more. If the zebras want to call touches, we have the horses now that like to play to contact.

Cats had 38 points in the paint on about 46% shooting. It wasn't 'only a few times'. They did get a few calls, including a technical that should probably have been a flagrant. But if the refs had called PSU's defense around the arc as inventively as they called the Cats, we'd have had a similar number of free throws.

I am pissed about the reffing too but if you watch the first 5 mins of each half again, there is no question the Cats fouled more than Penn State.

Such hand check fouls usually police themselves by conference season. Players hand check less and refs relax. In the Penn State game, neither happened so we got what we all witnessed.

Cats’ guards’ D had a big role in making the game what it ended up being.

Right - there was one ref who wanted to call the game differently than the mainstream refs. His obsession was those little hand moves that our guys use to slow the opponent down ever so slightly. Nicholson got called for one of those on Baldwin. My reaction was "If thats a foul then everybody will foul out of every game."

Bardo was pointing this out correctly. The refs are calling every little hand grab. Back off the point guard - make him shoot a jumper.

Since the Purdue faithful have whined so much about officiating in their games against the Cats the last few years, I think it would be divine justice tomorrow if the Cats beat them on a call in NU’s favor similar to the one they got hosed on against PSU.

Not to beat the dead horse for much longer, but one of the problems I saw with the reffing of the game was that the refs were absolutely not consistent in calling hand checks on both teams and that was part of the great disparity in free throws. Part of PSU's pressure defense involves a lot of hand contact and body contact, pushing, reaching in, and grabbing. They were simply not being called with the same scrutiny as the Cats players.

Bardo has some sharp observations. Billy M made a similar observation on WGN.
