It is clearly a problem that officials have so much impact on the outcomes of games. I’m not sure what the answer is, but our national obsession with fairness seems to be reducing competition, often at the worst possible moments.

Did you watch the last moments of Butler? PSU? did you see the flagrant call on Leach? The first 2 took points off the board at key moments very late. The latter took out our best scorer in a low scoring game.
It's not the obsession with fairness, it's an obsession with correctness. We used to deal with bad calls, we should go back to that except for obvious situations. Replays need to be capped at 30 seconds - if you can't immediately determine a call should be reversed, then it should stand as called.
When you are reviewing the call the idea should be to not error on the side of totally screwing a team. Ejection is more of a last resort. Should only be used when something is so egregious that there is no alternative, Gotta think that in this case, even if you thought it had happened and you had to do something you could have used Flagrant 1 (two shots and the ball but no ejection).
This is the second time in the last couple years that this has been called on us, Last year at Rutgers I believe Lonborg was called for it, Again no intent and part of a basketball play. How many times has it been called in the BIG during that time? Don't recall hearing about it with other teams (not sensitized to it but haven't heard of it either)
Do see how much we get screwed unfairly relative to more big-name programs? That’s the unfair part. Wish we could have more fairness.
Yes I recall in that same Rutgers game that Langborg get thrown out of, the Rutgers players literally stomped purposely on an NU players leg and did NOT get ejected. Getting ejected for incidental contact is absurd. The officiating in the big ten is the lead story in a huge percentage of games. How are they so bad???
I concur with everyone that we've had a run of questionable foul calls that have gone against us. I would note that as a general principle with regard to ordinary fouls, I wouldn't expect us to get as may calls as most of our Big10 opponents. because we don't have the two types of players that tend to draw lots of them: a) very quick guards that score in the paint and get fouled a lot doing it by defenders that on average are bigger and slower - MJ was the prototype, and b) a scoring big man who often won't be stopped any other way - Zach was the recent prototype. it helps to have scorers who score seeking contact and Leach, Martinelli and Ty don't do that.

I'd point out that last year Boo was that guard you mention and he got the crap kicked out of him without drawing fouls.
Brooks is our 'big' in your example and he is also getting the crap kicked out of him without drawing many fouls.
Meanwhile, the ongoing trend of guards getting free throws by throwing their heads back as they drive a shoulder into our guys' chests has been very rewarding for our opponents.
The foul they called on Nicholson when Goldin drove straight into him was absurd.

Illini took it up the giggy yesterday from the refs in East Lansing. KJ was allowed to play 7.5 minutes. Sadly, happens everywhere on the road.
This seems to be the (somewhat) accepted standard, and I would ask why? I know, the home crowd….etc. But if they really cracked down on it, I personally think it’s preventable.
Some of the problem is the “respect” given a few coaches like Izzo.
At some point certain refs also get the idea that they should be “seen”. The best refs and games are when you don’t really notice them because they are in the background.
Does the Big 10 have any kind of serious review of performance? Yesterday in the Illinois game it sure appeared that the Mich State bench was allowed to call a TO when it should not have been an option by rule. Then when Underwood complained they gave him a T.
