Tracey Claeys OUT at Minnesota

I'm kind of surprised by this. I thought that an 8-4 season followed by a bowl win would have saved his job for at least another couple of years.
Those were my thoughts as well. Kudos to the Minny administration. They made the right long term call for their reputation.

Hahaha! Right! Art Briles will ride in with his white steed and make the whole football gangbang situation just "go away."

In my mind, a 9-5 season with a bowl win is a success when coaching at Minnesota. Tracy is a solid coach but the administration probably thinks they can get someone better and the team boycott fiasco gives them ammunition to replace him.

If Minnesota can land PJ Fleck, I would call this an upgrade. Fleck is similar to Fitz and has had Fitz personally mentor him in how to mimic his coaching style. Fleck is still young and growing, but he is charasmatic and a player's coach. Fleck would lead to a bump in Minnesota recruiting, higher classes than Claeys could ever land. Fleck has had the top recruiting classes in the MAC for 3 years running. It's taken WMU from cellar dweller to top of the conference in that time.

Other than Fleck, I don't know if Minnesota can hire anyone better than. With signing day next month, they need to hire someone fast. Recruits are ripe for poaching. Has anyone heard of other candidates being discussed for the position?

Let's poach the crap out of these guys.

My guess is he would rather continue coaching in the pros. He would be a fantastic OC.

No one wants him in the pros at this point, particularly with the rep he has developed with some African American players. Come to think of it, that rep may make him a harder sell at the college level. I think his best chance is to come back to the college level but I think that move will not be as easy as you would think.

They have the lowest ranked class in the B1G. Andries is the crown jewel and who knows if he stays or not. We recruited their kicker verbal, but subsequently got a kicker.

Claeys had a great year on the field, but I don't think his recruiting would have been able to sustain the upward swing. In the long run, get the right coach and they may get better. This team will be a train wreck in the short term.

The coach has got the personality of a donut and resembles one too. Minnesota made the right move in getting rid of this douchebag

He could clean out the dirt, and be a hero when he resurrects them from the dead. Of course, I would insist on at least 5-6 year contract because they will suck the first few years. I would insist those that stayed are 100% on board with my rules or they would be more than welcome to seek other opportunities.

As we saw after this year, Fleck was not being courted by P5 powerhouses or any P5 that we know of. His value is probably as high as it will ever be. Even with another good year, he likely gets only mid to lower P5 offers. Despite the denials, I bet he ends up here.
Seems like Fleck has a skeleton or two in his closet as well. Just maybe that's why he hasn't received any top power 5 offers.

Hey, the more kickers the better. Just ask Shakes.

Ok, Minny is no longer on the most despicable list. At least the institution. The players that participated were predetors and disgusting. Claeys dug his own grave with a poorly worded tweet that conflicted publicly with his boss and made no mention of the serious nature of the accusations. I highly doubt a boycott was organized without Claeys and/or someone on his staffing knowing what was about to go down. It's his job to explain the consequences of the actions and to get his team the information on why the decision was made. The players backpedaled like Deon Sanders once the report was leaked. If he didn't have the information, he had no choice but to demand it from the AD as the University was about to go public with very damaging information. The public airing of the dirty laundry was not necessary if Minny handled this better.

Claeys never struck me as the sharpest tool in the shed, but his lack of any common sense whatsoever in his handling of this nightmare, forced the AD to replace him. As the leader of these young men, he has to act like a leader. He has no one to blame but himself. At least Minny choose doing the right thing over short term gratification of Wins. Claeys seems like decent football coach, but socially ignorant.
Not sure you should take them off the list just yet. I listened to the ADs remarks and it was all about FB performance (not beating WIS, no West champion, etc.) and lip service to the social issues and nothing about citizenship. And with regard to FB performance, in his one full year at the helm, all he did is get 9 wins, a winning record in the BIG and a bowl win. Being let go for performance is a joke. Recruiting, maybe. Being let go for the social and citizenship issues, I would have respect for.

Almost like they want to just make the whole rape situation go away, eh? If you don't talk about it, it is more likely people won't talk about it.

That is pretty amazing that the AD treated it that way. It has to be like GCG said. The powers-that-be (maybe not just the AD) made a conscious decision to not mention it in the midst of recruiting.

Seems to have worked at Tennessee.

While we are on this topic...
Baylor did the right thing way too late.
Minnesota did the right thing but seems ashamed of it.
Vanderbilt did the right thing but should not have been recruiting kids that put them in that position.
Other schools (FSU, Tennessee etc.) still appear to be trying to skirt the issue. And so far are doing it.

On the flip side of things. Harvard completely disbanded their men's soccer team for creating a list which rated the women's soccer team members by physical attractiveness.

Is Harvard maybe a little bit... out there? Of course, boys-will-be-boys does not and should not excuse rape or assault but making a list?

Speaking of Jerry Kill... he angry... VERY angry (click here for full article on The Scoop):

“I was shocked,” Kill told the ESPN Radio affiliate in Minnesota, via NJ.com, “and I think the coaching profession was shocked.”

“I won’t be stepping foot back in the stadium and I won’t stepping foot back at the university,” Kill said. “My wife and I. They are building a new complex and we had a lot to do with that, and we won’t ever see it.”

“The thing that disappoints me the most is going back over the last six years is he threw us all in there,” Kill said. “I feel like he threw me in there. We have done nothing but represent the state of Minnesota.”

“Players don’t know the guy, coaches don’t know the guy,” Kill said. “To call people out like that, I don’t think that’s professional.”

What is absolutely amazing is the quote "a number of coaches have reached out to a Football Scoop to register universal disgust at a coach being fired after a 9-win season."

Disgust?

Seriously? Is this an article in The Onion? Of all the words to use in this context, I think "disgust" is incredibly ironic. It was something disgusting that led to his firing. The other coaches could be upset, disappointed, even angry... but disgusted?
