Transfers for Basketball

Unless you don't work. Then you don't have to worry about paying taxes.

More like, unless you don't spend money. Because there are sales taxes on just about everything you spend money on. Survivalists living off the grid are about the only ones not paying taxes.

There's a lot to what happened. I blame Collins for recruiting a kid that went to four different high schools. Huge red flags there and I bet Collins doesn't make that mistake again. That being said, there's a reason why he's no longer a part of the program and why many programs view him as untouchable.

Kelly,

We think we know your pedigree so there is weight to what you say.

There was a persistent story line advanced on this board that Collins' stubbornness meant he would not allow Vasser on the team....even as a practice player....contrary to the good of the team.

I read the situation as Collins seeing the team as better sans Vasser than with Vasser. But some vehemently anti Collins types kept dragging it out as an indicator that Collins is not all that he's cracked up to be.

Vasser may have just been a poor fit and that may include personality. He chose to depart and Collins chose to close that chapter. The idea that he'd let him back in even in a practice role was nonsensical. Has that ever happened anywhere?

It would be great to have the scholarship but I won't slight Vasser for wanting to get the NU degree or for hanging on as long as possible.

Lots of lessons learned by lots of people (except for those on the NU message boards).

To be fair, it's really been one person hanging on to that storyline.

Why don't you just be straightforward about it and admit you don't like CC?

Because that would be untrue - but would explain your particular fetish with me. I think removing BC and bringing on CCC was the correct move. Absent an established coach like Shaka, who wasn't about to come to NU, CCC was a great choice. Blue blood lines with Duke as player and coach, having his old man around another bonus and a Chicago connection, to boot. He has come in and been much more open than PF - a man I have known dating back before his days at NU. I love the CCC hire, his recruiting success and his potential. But I don't think he is god-like, or perfect, or the best coach in bball history - maybe not even the best in NU history.

I'm not sold on his X's and O's. I think he waits too long to adapt - as evidence, two years in a row, he embraced man to man too long. I think he may have a bit of an ego problem and with the evidence so far, I think the Vassar thing is an example. And while he has taken recruiting to new levels, I am curious whether its him, or the story he sells. And if NU doesn't do something soon, that story will grow stale. Maybe CCC is simply a great recruiter - who knows...yet....

So, I truly am happy that CCC is the coach. While I have begun to question whether I like PF as HC - stubborn as he is, I have no question yet re CCC in that vein. I also find circle jerks not to my flavor. I rather discuss topics that may draw different opinions. So, talking about Vassar is interesting to me. Pondering different personnel choices, sets, strategies is intriguing. And when something happens that I predicted, I enjoy the warm feeling. And when it fails, then I have no problem being humbled.

Ignore is your friend. If you don't want to chat and cannot help yourself, put me on Ignore. Some of the greatest members of the board - mikey and shakes - have done so and all our lives are richer for it.

Me thinks willy has also hit this topic a few times.

And Medill - I'm not anti-Collins. Just because you post it, won't make it true.

And in the vein of not believing everything you read, do you really think Vassar announced his transfer of his own volition? C'mon Medill man - take off the blinders. At least apply the smell test. He still has a scholarship - you will never be able to explain the schollie as long as you believe it was Vassar pulling the strings. But, please do humor me. It's the question dodged. Well, one of them...

It looks like there is a scholarship way around this. I just saw this http://www.theindependent.com/news/...cle_321cb826-fa00-11e5-bf09-0f6674b7bbc4.html

While this is an NU Alum, this scholarship is given outside of the university system. Why could athletics get a donor to make up a scholarship and give it to Vassar. Maybe call it the most high schools attended before Northwestern scholarship. Then it becomes academic. I am sure he would win that prze.

You thinks wrong.

Well, obviously! It clearly shows.

Never said I was a homer. Not interested in being one either. And I don't think I need your approval to get in the fan club - Lou already taught me the secret handshake and Glades provided the secret password. So, I am in. Ignore is your friend.

You thinks wrong.

I stand corrected. Hard to remember who is getting beat up for what. You, Turk, obviously me ;) There are more. Anywho, I may be - but I don't think so - the only one that thinks:

- Vassar is perfectly ok to hold onto the schollie based on the sequence of events
- Vassar was asked to leave (but why, I have no guess - especially in light of the personnel and scholarship issues subsequently)
- the only realistic solution is to invite him back and hope he creates a scenario that allows the school to take back the schollie administratively, or transfers
- Vassar may still go on to play somewhere in year 5
- CCC screwed up this whole darn thing

Guess we can close up this thread and move onto another titillating topic. What do you have for us to discuss Virginia? Some exciting news about a chicken crossing the road? Current events in the South? What made BC the next anti-Christ and why we should all now fear Armageddon?

In lieu of not knowing any facts...

Nor any to the contrary. M-E-S-S-A-G-E B-O-A-R-D! Not to be confused with AP, CBS or anything else. A place where people go to talk about the topic of the board - here NU BBall. But, that said, facts:
1. Vassar on bball schollie
2. Vassar not on team
3. NU has removed athletes from athletic schollie for not being part of the team - due to breaking rules, disciplinary, choosing to quit. I can name names, but then you would be upset about me doing so. (I was also a NU scholarship athlete. I saw it, almost went through it myself.)

Little bit of logic says Vassar on bball schollie but not on team in such a fashion that does not release schollie from cap (ie - medical) means something is way out of the norm. Seeing that NU is not generous with these scholarships, something must explain it. Most logical conclusion - administrative screw up. Who is responsible for the bball team ultimately - CCC.

There are other possibilities - far fetched but possible. Sorry it hurts your feelings to learn your superman may not be so super. Still a great choice at the right time for the job. Still could become best NU coach ever. But human, and not perfect, and the jury is still out on many factors. I know, I know - after such a long and tedious battle with the Doc belaboring the BC v CCC point, counterpoint, underpoint, overpoint, etc., it must be hard for you to even imagine Sir Collins in err. It's ok. Just breathe. Ignore is your friend ;)

He gave a scholarship to a guy who quit or was tossed off the team after one season. How can you call that a success???

Could not have quit. Absolutely no way. Will wager my considerable estate upon it. And tossed off sounds like disciplinary....can't be disciplinary, again, would wager my estate.

May have pissed everyone off without breaking any rules, like I have seemingly done here, and therefore asked to leave. Announced transfer, CCC didn't follow the rules to end the scholarship, Vassar renegs (cause he can) and here we are. While I would not wager the estate, I would play heavy on this scenario.

I agree. There's absolutely no way he quit voluntarily, because then he wouldn't have his scholarship. In years past, this wouldn't be an issue for the program because the scholarship would not have been renewed for the next 1 year term. The guaranteed 4 year scholarship is there to discourage coaches from removing players who haven't broken any rules from their teams. By extension, it also penalizes a coach's recruiting mistakes more severely than before.

In this case, we have no idea why Vassar was removed from the team. Could be entirely performance-based. Someone alluded upthread to team chemistry issues. But it's highly unlikely that the whole truth will ever come out. In any case, I have absolutely no issue with what happened. Collins should have full control over his roster and the athletes should have academic protections in place for situations like this.

What saddens me is seeing NU fans who crow about our high academic standards and fine young student-athletes wanting Vassar to transfer or lose his scholarship.
