The 5-year careers they each spent here were transformative. Those two saw a whole lot of life here. They joined the program after some very lean years, committing to a coach who may not have had a lot of time left. They weathered Covid, and NIL, and the transfer portal. They played key roles on two of the best teams in program history, and they suffered season-ending injuries that robbed them of the opportunity to compete in the brightest lights of one of them. Great teams have more than the biggest stars. Players like Ty and Matt are just as important if you’re going to win at the highest level.
So, too, this season brought along disappointment of its own. But I continue to marvel at how our kids represent our school. To say nothing of the other seniors whose careers ended today, there’s something extra special about the super seniors. They are everything we love about college sports, at a time when that is rarer and rarer to find. These kids are now men, and I wish them success in whatever comes next. I hope they stay connected to the university and always have a home here. Here’s a big thank you for everything they accomplished and contributed in their time here - Matt’s bleeding arm and road hijinks with foul outs and opposing student sections and alley oops and ferocious swats, Ty’s jawing with Coleman Hawkins and bouncy 3s and in-bounds curl magic. And a whole, whole lot of winning. You two left a mark.
