Per reports, Cross hadn't been calling defensive since mid-2016 and he was a "co-coordinator" though it appears the head coach (former DC himself) was actually doing much of the defensive play calling:

Looks like Odom was looking for a reason to fire Cross and the first couple games provided sufficient cover. If Odom were looking to make changes on defense, he would have taken himself out of the playcalling role.

There would be no such easy transition possible at NU if we were to fire McCall or Hankwitz.
