Vassar

I hope not...because that WOULD be a selfish move.
Yeah cause he whole rest of the world is looking out for him.

He played the game and out smarted the establishment. Maybe he is my new hero.

Like the heads of industry aren't selfish. It's the American way. It's Capitalism at its best.

We necessarily define "gambles" under Coach much differently from Carmody's gambles because Chris is going after blue-chip recruits. If Coach signs someone who isn't a well-known commodity with many solid offers, that's a gamble for him. You can't compare Coach's recruiting ambitions to Carmody's. Carmody may well be a better in-game tactician (is it debatable? maybe?), but Coach is a much more aggressive, ambitious recruiter.

If you want to equate Coach's gambles to Carmody's, you could say Coach's gambles are reaches while Carmody's gambles seemed to be total shots in the dark at times. Looking at the totality of Carmody's era, we had a few walk-ons who were better than a number of his scholarship players. I don't think that should happen very often. To be fair to Carmody, when he did have well-regarded players, sometimes that blew up in his face, too.

Look, I am a Carmody appreciator. Nevertheless, everything you say above is true. While Carmody brought in some really great players, he also brought in a ton of duds. To date, Collins has only one dud. Oh well. Collins is recruiting as well as humanly possible given the situation, and he has brought a great culture to the program.

Or maybe he realized for the first time he wasn't going to be good enough to go pro and thought why do all the BB work when I can get a great education.
If, for example, he weren't showing up for basketball practice when he's supposed to, I think NU would have justification in pulling his scholarship. But the fact that he is not participating with the team, has no role on the team, ultimately was not decided by him.

Really? Wonder how many of his former teammates look at him that way.

Wonder how much he cares? Deering is right - is a dog eat dog world. Those of you on this Board living in nice homes, driving nice boats, vacationing in distant lands either got there in a fashion that spilt a little milk along the way...or on the tails of your parents, and they spilt the milk.

So, the fact that this kid is looking out for number one sounds reasonable to me. He is no longer part of a team. Therefore, the 'I' is all that matters. I doubt CCC has offered to pay his tuition to Harvard if he leaves, nor would any of you. So, why should he care what any of them, or you, think?

I'm going to be proud of him if he gets his degree at NU. Like Feral said, Coach decided to recruit him, decided to offer a 4-yr scholarship, decided to encourage him to transfer, and decided not to let him return to the team. I wonder how often basketball staff members are in touch with him pressuring him to find a new school. I'm sure that he doesn't have the tutoring and support system that he had as a member of the team. After all of the high schools that he attended, being at NU can't be the easiest place in lieu of the situation. Hope he is doing well in class and making his way toward a Bachelor's.

It's a good lesson for Coach, too.

I can definitely see why you agree with his action. Your idea of how people become a success is a joke. Now go and enjoy your lonely existence, since I can't imagine anyone wanting to be your friend.

Nor should he...

Can you explain why you feel that Vassar is the bad guy here? Don't you ever think that you give Coach way too much leeway after giving the previous coach absolutely none? I think Coach is doing a fine job on the way to big things (hopefully), but Bill didn't break any rules, didn't hurt anybody, didn't disgrace us or the University, he graduated his guys, he went to the postseason more than anybody else did. Coach Chris still has a lot to prove, and if anything, he should have to earn our respect. So far he has been earning mine, but don't you think you give him too much too soon in terms of blanket support?

I think that's uncalled for. XYZ is a Chicken Little and a naysayer for the sake of being negative, but It must have been very tough on Johnnie to move around so much and never really have a home as a teenager, which are the most vulnerable years for a young man. I doubt very much that Johnnie is "gaming" the system. He may come out of this well with an NU degree, but he presumably loves to play basketball as well. Since Coach won't let him play, should he give up his dream school?

Ok, I'll settle for the fact that xyz isn't very smart. Do you think that the reason that Collins doesn't want him on the team is because he made it known that he wanted to transfer away from NU, right? Yes, he is "gaming" the system and if he's comfortable hurting the school that gave him a schlorship and his former teammates then he is a selfish person, period.

On the one hand I was being a little sarcastic on the other hand I've been on the short end of the decisions made by the "power people". I learned the hard way that it is not all about putting in an honest and faithful career. The only way to assure your stability is to get somebody over a barrel with some kind of binding agreement or network your way into strong alliances. You can bring all kinds of prosperity to an organization but money has a short memory. I've seen too many qualified people passed over for cousin Bobbie or golf partner Sam to think anyone is looking out for me.

Reading between then lines, I'd guess (purely guessing) that they made an agreement with Vasser and he is living up to his end of the agreement. NU got something too, I'm sure.

I doubt anyone is acting purely out of the kindness of their hearts.

Just wondering what NU could have possibly gotten from Vassar. OK, maybe a season of practice time and a 10 or so minutes of playing time. Could he be close to fulfilling his requirements to graduate? Hope so.

I'm thinking there was some agreement made that included a silence clause. Could be protecting either or both parties. Bad press hurts recruiting and the coaches reputation also hurts the student's reputation and future prospects. Something didn't work out, maybe the agreement was weak (shame on NU's lawyers, I suppose).

Moving the previous coaches guys along is one kind of vibe, moving your own guy along is another. Add some twist that was meant to be helpful but turned out wrong or failed and can be interpreted in different ways would not be a good way to begin a young coaches tenure. Some times it is better to eat it. Sometimes the further you go down a rabbit hole the more you have to eat.

I have read nothing to indicate that anyone did anything wrong but indications are that something didn't work out right and Collins decided it was better to invest his time coaching others more and Vasser not at all. Vasser seems to have been given the option to pursue other programs; he apparently didn't find any that shared a mutual interest.

Gentlemen and ladies. I am of the opinion that at some point, after hundreds of posts, the subject of these threads is unfairly treated. Not because any posts are right, or wrong. But because the topic of which he's a part takes on its own energy. A negative energy that surely the subject and the other students at the University he attends are exposed to.

Think Steve Bartman.

There can't be more than 30 or 40 of us discussing this.

Today I offer each and every one of you a bottle of Ireland's finest whiskey two years from today if this topic is not raised on this board between now and then. By that I mean either Jameson's or Tullamore's Dew.

Let's drop it. We're not adding any insight and if we haven't already crossed a line we're headed that way.

Amen. Enough speculation.

Good with me with or with out the whiskey.

Can I have your bottle then?
Actually no. But I'll sell my interest in the bottle today for $2.00. I suspect the chances are high that the value of this bottle goes to zero before two years are up.;)

This went way beyond what I intended in bring it up, so I will gladly bang the gong.

Medill,

Let's split the cost of a Red Breast 12 or 15 and you got a deal!

Ok, it looks like I have to be the voice of reason here....Irish whiskey is terrible and you all should be ashamed.
