This is a bit long, but if you clicked on this, maybe you'll stick around for the story...

Some of you may know I live in Des Moines. Grew up in the Chicago area, but have been out here for just under 15 years. What not a single one of you knows is that I love bagels. We don't have the best options here, so when I heard that there was a new bagel company in town that had set up at the Des Moines Farmers Market this year, I was intrigued. The bagels got great reviews and sold out nearly every week, but I didn't have a chance to get down there to check them out.

Fast forward to last week and I decided to see how I could try them. The company is called Black Bagel Co. and I find them on Instagram, check out their site and give them a follow. They don't have a physical store location at this time, but they do have an option where you can order bagels once a week and they will deliver them to your home. So last week, I got a half dozen bagels, they arrived on Thursday, and they were great.

So today I am scrolling Instagram and Black Bagel Co. has a new post. I read it and click on the comments and see there is a comment from a fella named Lloyd Andrew Yates. Hmm...Lloyd Yates. It couldn't be...could it? Do a little digging and it is 100% the Lloyd Yates that played at Northwestern about ten years ago. Apparently, him and his wife moved out here within the last year or so and started this company. It was way out of nowhere and kind of shocked me. Obviously, not a big deal either way, but totally bizarre that this random bagel company I decided to try and track down is owned by a former NU football player here in Des Moines of all places.

And yes, I know that he was part of the lawsuit against Northwestern in July of 2023. I don't necessarily want this to turn into that whole discussion again, but thought I'd share that story that totally caught me off guard.

Here is their site - not much info on there yet, but apparently they are looking into getting a physical store location soon. I'm all for it - great bagels!
