First off, he seems like a great kid and is clearly a team player… but he cannot be any more than the 3rd PG next year. And I want Collins to be brutally honest with him about that. Likely that means he transfers and we wish him well but if he wants to stay that’s cool too. I don’t want to pull schollies and do dirty shit most programs do. We are better than them win or lose. However, extreme honesty is needed. He just isn’t cut out for this level.

I thought that convo had been had after the last year…..! I’m surprised that their still seem to be believers, that the improvement is going to happen.

Meh, he's not doing well so far but I'm open to more summer development and opportunities next year for him.

He’s actually regressed from the first game. Today it was painful how much he did not pose a threat at all. At many points he did not even pretend that he could get a shot up or penetrate. Just dribbled and passed the ball around in the perimeter. A defense that understands this will significantly close gaps. Which they did

That is what he has always done. Look for the man to pass too at the top of the key. In the press conference, Coach said that Clayton asked to redshirt this year before the season started. Why would a healthy player request to redshirt?

I'm not going to criticize Clayton anymore.
I don't understand why Collins started Clayton yet again.
Did that snub affect Windham? Hard to say. Maybe? Hopefully not, but Windham had a tough game.
Why not reward Windham with the start?
But if we have to play Clayton because we don't have anybody else on the roster, thats the way it goes.
Coach makes the roster, coach deals with the problems.
Had Buie gotten hurt last year it would have been a total disaster.

Dave Revsine and Jess Settles were openly talking about Chris Collins being "so disappointed" or "so depressed" or whatever words they used to describe his mood, but come on, man, your team needs some leadership. You don't let your players think that you've given up on the season. If the tv guys know it, the players sure as hell know it.

We basically limped into the NCAA Tourney as it was with all the injuries we already had. I think they were the clear #2 in the conference without those injuries. It's a huge credit to their grittiness that the players still won their first-round game.

I know injuries are part of the game, but it's just awful luck to be hit like this two seasons in a row.

Not to mention we probably are a 6 healthy and I would have bet the farm on making the second weekend as a result 😢

Seems that the best case scenario for all parties (assuming he wants to play basketball) is to transfer. If he wants to keep the scholarship, and sit on the bench, get the education, that is understandable.

As I've said before, Clayton should stay at NU and get his diploma. Its the smart move.

Since we're all just guessing, my guess is that Clayton realized he might need more than 4 years to graduate and requested to redshirt this season in order to get a scholarship for 5 years.

If thats not how it works, then obviously my guess is wrong.

So nu is stuck footing his scholarship while he is choosing to not play? I’m not that familiar with some of these technicalities.
I'm a big advocate of trying to clear guys who aren't going to be contributors off the roster, but if he's at a point in the transfer cycle where it's too late for him to get out then he's gonna be on your roster anyway and it makes sense to allow him to redshirt if he's not gonna play anyway.

You get 24 hours to mourn. Then you gotta flush it.

It's also possible that by the end of the summer Collins and Clayton talked and it was expressed that Clayton wasn't developed enough to start and maybe only have limited minutes off the bench, so they decided to red shirt and see if he could get it together for his junior year.

Historically, and setting aside BMac and Boo, Collins' teams have lacked a dependable and experienced point guard, let alone a backup one, so it isn't unreasonable for him to try and hold onto a guy who might still develop into that - while he pins his hopes on KJ being that guy next year.

It’s pretty clear Clayton is not very good right now. However, the man gave up a year of playing (somewhere, maybe NU) to try and help out. He goes to practice every day and isn’t stupid. He can see that we have issues at PG this year when we lost Barney and Jalen. In fact, they both were forced into that role because no one else on the roster was ready. I am not sure he’ll ever be a good player, but I know he is a good teammate.

KJ is not a clear PG either considering he played SG in high school. Good chance that was because they had en elite PG in his HS team and KJ can develop into a solid PG. But he's not even had the same experience most PG's had in HS.

I think Clayton can develop into a serviceable player. I remember all the crap bandied about Jeremy Nash and he should go away. He worked on his shooting and became a decent to good player. Will this occur with Clayton? Not a clue. Not every player will develop into a star, but NU needs serviceable roll players. I thought Clayton played dome pretty decent defense. We had a tremendous point guard for a number of years, but Collin’s had to go get one for this year. Does that mean Clayton was a miss, Collin’s did not develop him, Clayton did not work, or a combination of all? I do not know.

NU needs the coaches to develop and improve Clayton, Mullins, Gelo, and Windham. Three things are clear to me: 1) our backcourt and swing players need to shoot 500 3s a day; 2) our bigs need to lift heavy weights. Other team have muscle definition. Ours do not. We need to get stronger; and 3) we need to develop and get some production from the 5 spot.

This is the most glaring weakness in our offense.
We can't throw an entry pass to the post to save our lives.
I started counting the wildly errant passes "generally toward the basket" and stopped because it was too painful.

Critically, Nicholson doesn't know how to post up - whereas Fitzmorris, who is inferior athletically, knows how to do the things big guys normally do in the post, like baby hooks or using your shoulder to turn into a defender and shoot a layup or (gasp) draw a foul.

You would think we'd have Nicholson coming off screens for lob dunks, but we don't.

The point raised throughout this thread is that from what Clayton has shown, the probabilities of his becoming a serviceable player are probably 5 to 15 %. After two years he is an absolute liability on offense and his defense is still far from what is needed. There are no flashes to show he can become a reasonable Big player. If he wants to play, he needs to transfer. If he wants to stay for his degree, I get that but there should be no illusions that he will get any playing time.

I agree with all of this, but in Clayton's case somebody on the coaching staff has to show him how to shoot the ball. His shooting grip is terrible, which is why some of his shots, even his foul shots, are so wildly off the mark. I coached one of my grandsons in this regard when he was in 6th grade and now he makes most of his free throws and plenty of 3 pointers as a sophomore in high school. Practicing a bad shooting stroke and grip doesn't help much.

not sure he will find a great option if he decides to transfer. It’s prob a risk he is trying to decide on. I’m pretty sure once you announce you’re going to transfer, the original school does not have to take you back if you decide you don’t like your options. It’s a tough decision for him. Based on what he has shown, he is prob best off just getting his degree at NU and being content to not play much. But most players believe they are better than they are and prob don’t get great advice too. Will be interesting to see what he decides.

Serious question—- don’t you think that B Mac, CCC or other of the coaches would already have tried to work with him on both his shooting and handle? I would be most surprised if they hadn’t done so. That is a big part of why I think he doesn’t become a serviceable Big reserve.

Realistically, Clayton is playing now. He played 21 minutes (to Windham's 19) against Nebraska.
He's not a lost cause... and Berry will be gone next year.
Collins also gave him opportunities last year when he was clearly very timid (and in over his head), so I think it is safe to say that the coach likes him. And, to be fair, Clayton does look better this year than last year.
Not sure he can beat guys one on one - and if you can't do that as a point guard it limits you.
And defensively, he's the worst guy on the court for NU.
But there's time.
He just doesn't have Windham's talent.

Yep, I would think so as well, but watch his shooting stroke, it's just plain bad. He's never going to be a good shooter unless he changes his grip and stroke. It's not really possible to be a good point guard unless you can shoot the long ball. Opposing defenses will simply invite him to take the 3 and drop back to cover other players on offense. That said, unless Clayton learns how to shoot. he's never going to be an effective point guard at NU.

He looks the same to me as last year.

I really was surprised by his hopping around in the Washington game.
Really odd how he jumps back and forth - it seems to me that he put in a lot of time on agility.
Whether it adds value, I don't know - it just looks weird.

When he played as a freshman, he hunched over and turned to protect the ball from the defender.
And I think his shot looked worse.
He was afraid last year. This year, he's probably too willing to put it up - although the coaches may have talked to him early in the Nebraska game about that (after he took our first shot and missed).
