This wasn't about coaching. This was purely about the players not executing. We missed wide open shot after wide open shot. I don't know what it is about us and 2-footers. We really should have won that game by double digits. It's hard to blame coaching on that one, unless you want to blame the coaches for recruiting guys who can't shoot. When somebody owns you in close games, your guy is getting outcoached.
I just posted this on a different thread, but our bigs (Matt, Tydus, Nick, Robbie) were 7 of 12 from the floor. This wasn't about coaching. This was purely about the players not executing. Maybe, but that's not the coach's fault. We had plenty of good looks which we just plain missed, including layups and 3s. We had a lot more shots than PSU, I believe it was 15. Coaching was not the issue here.Their guys are better shooters. They got the looks they wanted. We did not.
Dude — Lundy made two bailout threes. NU didn’t give PSU good outside looks. They made tough outside shots, shot way more inside than the would’ve liked, turned the ball over like crazy, and won because an NU team short on shooters shot a bit worse than they usually shoot.. They got the looks they wanted. We did not.

NU has to ugly it up to win. It wasn’t ugly enough.
I’m excited for Shrewsberry to call a whole bunch of ‘6-7 guy in your face’ threes for Lundy today.
PSU has one big. He is a Top 100 freshman and made 1 of 2 shots, He went to the bench with 4 fouls with 15 minutes left. WE DID NOTHING to take advantage.Penn State’s bigs shot 75% (3 of 4) against us! They should have pounded it inside!
Henn is a big, too. Don’t embarrass yourself.PSU has one big. He is a Top 100 freshman and made 1 of 2 shots, He went to the bench with 4 fouls with 15 minutes left. WE DID NOTHING to take advantage.

Sorry but there is also a difference in talent. Add it that that was a super senior laden team due to COVID exemptions. Also United Center is supposed to be a very difficult place to shoot and they had had a session there and we had not. Remember all those unexplained air balls? Berry being 1/10 sure did not help. Reality in this game the game was lost in the first 5 minutes with all those missed layups that should have had us up by a bunch. When somebody owns you in close games, your guy is getting outcoached.
When you play into your opponents strengths and get away from your advantages for two consecutive games against the same inferior opponent, you (the coach) have to look in the mirror and take some responsibility for the losses.Let’s say Lundy shoots 50% from 3 (he doesn’t). The odds of hitting two are 25%. With the shot clock at 2 or 3 and Barnhizer in his face the odds that he hits both are probably 10%. Sometimes you just get beat. It’s not coaching. It’s easy to look in the rear view mirror and see how things could have been different.
I don’t see the point of sending out bad vibes on multiple threads. Look forward to next week.
We have better talent than PSU. Our problem is that they know exactly what they want to do.S

48% of Penn State’s shots are three-pointers in conference play. Last night, it was 39%. That’s a significant difference. NU prevented them from getting what they wanted.Look at the numbers. PSU wants to shoot threes because they are good at it.
Lundy made that 3 over Barnhizer - he wanted to take that shot.
Defense keeps you in games. But you need some O. UC is a difficult place to shoot and they had experience there and we did not. Air balls from Buie, 1-11 from Berry and poor O from Audige is an indication of that48% of Penn State’s shots are three-pointers in conference play. Last night, it was 39%. If you argue that PSU wants bailout threes as the shot clock expires and a hand in the shooter’s face, I invite you to court how many they get today.
Whatever. I’m excited for the selection show tomorrow. I’m happy the players get to soak in the adulation at W-R. And I sure hope that wherever the Cats are is bathed in purple come next week. Go Cats Go.
Nowhere did I say that we played bad defense. We played bad offense. PSU made some big 3's. Thats what they do.48% of Penn State’s shots are three-pointers in conference play. Last night, it was 39%. That’s a significant difference. NU prevented them from getting what they wanted.

Lundy also badly bricked a 3 in the second half with a hand in his face and the shot clock running down. Similar situation to the one he made in OT. Not much else you can do there. I'd take the same approach again in the same situation. The Cats played solid D and made them take a long range shot with a hand in the face. It's a fairly low percentage shot, and if he misses, the Cats are in the driver's seat.Let’s say Lundy shoots 50% from 3 (he doesn’t). The odds of hitting two are 25%. Pound it inside to whom exactly? I wouldn't trust any of those guys you listed to be the go-to guys in a game plan. If we were so dominant inside, we should have done a much better job controlling the boards on both ends. Matt and Tydus should have had a feast on second chance points. They just aren't offensive players. No coach would design a game plan around them.I just posted this on a different thread, but our bigs (Matt, Tydus, Nick, Robbie) were 7 of 12 from the floor.
The 3 guards (Buie, Audige, Berry) were 10 for 41.
Bad play by the guards and a bad gameplan by the coaches to not destroy them inside.
We should not lose to a team that cannot defend the post.
How many touches did they get down by the basket?Pound it inside to whom exactly? I wouldn't trust any of those guys you listed to be the go-to guys in a game plan. I'm saying neither of those two guys have the skill to score inside. We've seen it tried every now and again. Matt has no touch and even the little guys take the ball away from him if it isn't a lob-dunk. There is one goal for Matt this offseason and that is to develop some semblance of a post move. Tydus is a little better, but he has trouble establishing position. They tried backing down Barnhizer in the post a few times, but he simply couldn't make shots. Finally, PSU packed the paint against us. If any of our guys could make a wide open 3, we would have pulled them out of that and won this game going away. How many touches did they get down by the basket?
The fact that we don't have an offense that (ever) gets the big guys the ball in the paint does not mean that they can't score against smaller opponents. It means we didn't try.
If you want to say that the coaches should not modify the offense depending on the opponent, that seems problematic to me.
They own us since joining the conference. It's weird. I'd be interested to know what the teams' conference records are if you exclude playing each other. Because we are like .333 against what is otherwise a 2nd tier program like ours. They just own us in these close games. It has been like this for years.
It shouldn't be shocking that Barnhizer (at 6'6") had a hard time bullying the guys on Penn State, who matched his physicality. The mismatch was Nicholson against Henn or Dread and to a lesser extent Njie.I'm saying neither of those two guys have the skill to score inside. We've seen it tried every now and again. Not if we shot the ball like we did against PSUIU might be the best team in the country when down by 15 with less than 5 minutes to play. Happy PSU won but I would've felt pretty good about us playing IU to get to the champ game.
Reality for penn state tomorrowNot if we shot the ball like we did against PSU
Probably right, but that's what everybody said 3 games ago! 😂Reality for penn state tomorrow
Edey looks like a flesh-eating zombie. He may eat PSU on Sunday en route to 30 points.Reality for penn state tomorrow
