If we go into the NCAA's this year, I would think that Collins would stay at least one more year just because it may be interesting to build a program from a SHiiiiiit hole. If he stays, he can engrave his name in an institution like nobody else, sorta like Coach K at Duke or Ryan at Wisconsin. But would he stay? He seems to be comfortable here but he also has 'deep roots' at Duke.

Stupid post of 2015, if only you had waited a few hours it would have been the front runner for 2016.

Collins said in his interview with Jon Rothstein his intention is to be at NU a long time. Wants to create his own legacy.

As long as we pay Collins and update facilities to acceptable P5 levels, keeping Collins should be doable.

We are in a huge metro area with fertile recruiting grounds.

Academics are a selling point. BIG is a selling point.

We may not reach the stratosphere of Duke but no reason we cannot be a competitive program year in and year out.

If Duke does in fact come calling one day, it will mean NU has reached a level never seen at this institution and we say thank you to Collins.

Coach K is *old*. 69 in February. Let's say he retires in three years, and NU has been to the tourney twice, or even just once. Wouldn't his former top assistant - having taken the worst major program in history to its highest height, under more rigorous academic restrictions - be a good candidate? Duke is different, after all (though not really), and CCC 'gets it'.

I don't think it's implausible that CCC would be a candidate under those circumstances. But I don't think that's the stratosphere either.

Agree wholeheartedly with NJ Cat and RhabdoWildcat. Great interview of Collins on Jon Rothstein podcast. He is from the area and has a young family and wants to establish his own legacy. I believe he wants to build a program with sustained success and a win at UNL or one trip to the tourney is not what he is striving for.

But Turk, nice try to clutter the NU sports buzz that Wildcats' fans of the football and basketball teams have as they are a combined 23-3 this season. And no, a fifth year senior is not what NU needs next year and no, Johnny Vassar's 13th scholarship is not detrimental to this season's success. What NU needs is talented frosh as Collins has done and IMHO, Vasser will be gone after this season as he transfers.

lol.
He is under contract and has torepresent the school and support the program, and you use his words as confirmation? He is the last person anyone should ask because he is duty bound not to say "im looking". You understand we would lose every recruit?

But you...you think he stays.?
I hope he stays but he would be absolutely nuts if he didnt take the Duke job. i put it at 50/50.

If he gets a Duke offer, he's gone and we should applaud him on his way out of town.

Besides that, I don't think he'd leave for anything less than a top-20 job, and that's likely only if Phillips somehow bungles things, which he's not likely to do.

Following a legend isn't that easy. Ask those who succeeded Wooden and Knight. Collins has roots here as strong as those in Durham.

This 100% correct. If that is his dream job, he should let someone else try it and fail first.

I disagree! This is likely one of the most important topics of 2016! Great post! We got two great coaches in Fitz and Collins! Hope we pay them what they need to stay!

What's stupid is your insecurity and frailty of mind. As if this isn't a possibility? Of course it is! It always is. So STFU. It's not a stupid post at all. It's just a subject you'd rather not recognize. That makes YOU stupid. Not the post.

Nice attack. Working on a new board record for posts deleted in a year?

This post is of Turk's typical trolling quality, but DocCatsFan locked up the worst post of 2015 some time ago with his infamous "apology" post on the football board. Turk couldn't top that if he tried.

How's this Turk ... I don't think he'll leave for any college job other than Duke. And Duke, well, let's see if the offer ever comes.

Reasonable inferences:
1. Coach K is in good health and encouraged Collins and Wojo to take jobs elsewhere because most sane people would deduce that he is not going anywhere for the foreseeable future. My inference is that he told them to get experience because he is not going anywhere;
2. Jason Capel turned down a $2 million a year offer to go to ASU and stay as lead assistant at Duke. Why? A logical inference is that he is the coach in waiting;
3. Collins stayed approximately 20 years at Duke (with a brief assistant coaching position at Seton Hall for a couple of years). He was very loyal to Duke and turned down offers from other schools like ISU and he waited for NU job (Illinois sniffed around him and he did not want to go there);
4. It is tough to follow a legend if you want to make a name for yourself. See the numerous failures of the successors to John Wooden as an example. And yes, I put Coach K at the John Wooden level; and
5. Who says that Coach Collins would be the best fit at Duke - Capel, Mike Brey and others might be better fits in the mind of the AD (see what hoops Barry Alvarez is making Greg Gard do at UW and he wants to make his choice and not let Bo Ryan dictate who the next coach will be.

My inference is that he wants to build a tradition of success at NU and make his own history but that is my opinion.

But can we enjoy some of the ride to success or do we have do the Gary Barnett thing after every win? How about talking about how Collins and his staff is evaluating high school talent and successfully recruiting them to go to NU?

yeah njcat kinda shocked me with his post. It isnt only a legit question but it is also a question the entire ncaa will ask every time he does an interview. Coaching is a profession just like the game itself. It depends how ambitious he is because he will peter out in ncaa's as this isnt the sorta program that will take him to the final 4, never mind finals.

Yes, I think he stays. While he may bleed Duke blue, he has the opportunity to make his name at NU. Replacing Coach K is drinking from the poison chalice. No upside to that. Coach K is unique, there will be a fall-off whoever replaces him.

And I really question why you picked this time to ask this hypothetical question. Just stirring the pot? No pushy-pushy today?

Collins will be more marketable to Duke if he does well at NU,vs Jason Cappel being an asst.If Collins takes us to the sweet 16, he will be very marketable!

no time for the ole push push today. Football you bet.

I wouldn't be shocked if he left for Duke, and I wouldn't blame him, but I also am more inclined to believe that he won't go, that he will stay at NU to create his own legacy. We'll see.

Guy is coaching in essentially his home town, in the best conference in the country, with a lot to sell, and his OWN legacy to create, rather than inherit. I don't see him kicking the door down to get out.

That's blindly ignorant. He could leave for dozens of jobs at any time once he takes us to the sweet 16...

Sorry but what was stupid was this childish overreaction of a response.
There was nothing stupid about Turk's post - even if the board censors don't like to hear it and pull posts that tell the truth in favor of nonsense like NJCat's post...

Could just as easily turn down those dozens of jobs, no? I sincerely doubt that the NU job was the first he was offered, so seems like there was something particular about the opportunity he likes/liked.

I think they pull posts that are overt attacks regardless of the message or "truth."

Well gcg, if that was true, then njc's post would be gone. I think the powers that be tend to side with koolaid clan. It would be great if the 'rules' were enforced uniformly. Instead, some folks like you, shakes, njc, mike, va get pretty liberal application while Turk, stupor and myself see posts disappear regularly. Personally, I use it as inspiration to look for ways to post my thoughts more pointedly while skating within the 'rules.'

Nobody else went juvenile with crap like "STFU". THAT'S why his post was deleted.

Oh...if you don't like the koolaid, don't post over here. There's certainly other forums out there that enjoy bashing Phillips, NU hoops, and NU football at every opportunity if that's what you're looking for...

Oh, I love it here. I'm sure there are plenty of homer sites that you could post. They are probably pretty desolate since that stuff gets boring fast, but enjoy.

Already hashed this topic some time ago.

I stated that as long as the admin gives CC enough support, he will stay at NU for the long term.

CC wants to build his own program and Chicago is home (close to friends and family).

I don't think CC will even take the Dook job initially (if offered) when it opens up when his former coach/boss retires.

CC would be a bigger legend at NU taking the 'Cats to a B1G championship than he would be at Dook leading them to another national title.

Would have to be a situation where Dook BB takes a downhill turn w/ the alums calling out for CC to come back (assuming, of course, a certain level of success at NU) - much like Roy Williams finally returning to coach his alma mater.

Walker Fan is spot on about this. I don't even know why this is a discussion. To me, the situation SCREAMS that Capel is the guy. Besides his experience as an assistant, he brings nine years as a head coach. Everybody else is a distant second.

This is friggin' DUKE, not Seton Hall. The AD that brings in a new coach with a round-of-64-experience or two and less than five years coaching should be shot.

If this happens in the next couple years, the former Duke assistant they should really bring in is Mike Brey, but he may be a little long in the tooth by that time.

If Duke is calling for his return, I can live with that. It means we've arrived.
