Northwestern Should be a Basketball School

Making a full thread on this. I'm a football guy over basketball by a wide margin, but last night just emphasizes that NU is better suited to be a basketball school. The crowd is great and our campus and students are quick to pack out Welsh-Ryan, unlike football where it's a constant struggle even when the team is alright. We get a much higher percent in purple, and our small stadium is a true atmospheric advantage in many ways. There is a MUCH larger national history of small academic schools being premium basketball programs. Chicago seems like the perfect place for a little basketball school to be.

Jackson, Schmidt, and the department should act accordingly. Football shouldn't be starved, it's still the cash cow and we should still invest enough for a competitive and respectable team, but when making revenue sharing and other resource decisions the emphasis should be on dollars for hoops. For example, if the typical football school is taking their $20 million in revenue sharing and giving $14 million to football, $4 million to basketball, and $2 million to everything else, NU should give football $11M and basketball $7M.
I said that 15 years ago and most of you thought I was crazy. Finally becoming a reality.

Northwestern Should be a Basketball School

I've been a basketball cats fan for a long time. I think NU is much more of a basketball school than a football school, but that might just be my own bias.

But I don't know that the numbers for this year's football is entirely solid - I was interested in going, but the school totally priced me out of the market, and I'm too lazy to try and find stuff on the secondary markets. I think that pricing was a huge mistake for a lot of reasons and I hope they reconsider/lower it next season.

For the money game, I think an equitable split is fair. Football needs more money to entice/hang on to a similar percentage of difference makers.
I went to school in the late 60s when we had a pretty good basketball team and football team. I used to go to games for both. Basketball was much more enjoyable to me as that's a sport I played all my life. Kind of agree with the concept since basketball is easier to be successful at with just a few key players required.

No self-respecting algorithm does that. Might want to take that dude off your bookmarked websites.
But thanks for pointing it out - it made me laugh out loud.
Unless he went to NU, then he's a frickin genius.
I tend to agree, but I also think he may just not be as good at how to set things up in the early going until teams are all connected and there is a lot more data. The fact that there was any data BEFORE the season is crazy enough. I thought he was decent enough last year, but I probably did not find the site until December.

Mostly I'm just a dork who likes to look at a lot of numbers. Tonight should be fun in the non-sports arena.

Now I just became even more of a Knicks fan (hey it's where I grew up). Knicks sign Boo Buie!

I cannot envision Boo making it onto the floor of a regular season NBA game, but I've certainly underestimated him before.
Well those two way contract guys basically get to sit on the end of the bench when guys are hurt or resting, and if a couple guys are hurt and resting at the same position maybe they get some garbage time or a small number of minutes. If there is a catastrophic injury situation maybe they play a lot.

But he gets over a half million dollars for this gig and gets identified as a priority to stick on the D League team as a prospect of interest. Even if it goes nowhere it's a great start to a lucrative career before going to Europe.

Yesterday at this time, Haslam was predicting something like 10-10, 19-11 for NU. Today, it's 17-3, 27-3!

Thoughts on the game

I might be mis-remembering already, but I think part of Angelo getting the bench was that he has at least a two second window to move the ball up court of the fast break for an easy dunk by.. Luke? and he chose to stop the movement and just hang out on the arc instead, and then did the dumb dribble drive.

And yeah, Fitz was trying too hard too often to get some points in his limited minutes and coach just put a hammer down on that.

I really think that after the first five minutes or so, Collins realized this really was going to be an extended team practice and he ran it that way. So when guys were off their marks or trying to create instead of practicing the offense, he went off on them.

It's quite likely the new guys and the "new" guys don't realize just how hard their future games are going to be and just how much doing everything right to their best ability will matter to victory. But Collins is quite aware. I suspect Dayton will knock them back down to earth - hopefully while still losing to us.

I really liked what I saw from all of them on defense. They need to learn their positions and responses better, but all the fighting for the ball and never giving up on a play was awesome.
