FB RECRUITING Northwestern 'checks a lot of boxes' for massive 2026 OT Braden Wilmes

I talked to 6-foot-8, 285-pound, 2026 OT Braden Wilmes about his offer from Northwestern and his recruitment.

No more Wrigley games. Please.

The novelty of Wrigley games is clearly gone for NU fans. I understand that it's a bit of a money grab for the school. But it's gross.

If you look at the home conference opponents in 2025, only Michigan makes much sense for Wrigley. But why roll out the red carpet and let them take over the place?

Minnesota, Oregon, Purdue, UCLA are the other conference opponents. Please just play at the lake.

One other request...rather than giving the visiting teams entire sections in the north end zone at the lake, can we just allocate the crappy seats near the top?

+/- for the Battle against Butler

Here's the surprising breakdown for the Wildcats disappointing loss to the Butler Bulldogs...

Matt Nicholson edges out Brooks Barnhizer for "Player of the Game" honors, based on the team's +10 when he was on the floor for a career high 30 minutes, coupled with Matt's 14 points on 4 field goal attempts and 8 of 9 free throw shooting.

In a major reversal, the Cats struggled terribly when Justin Mullins was in the game, getting outscored 18-4 in almost 8.5 minutes. That includes an 11-2 deficit over 3 segments paired with Nicholson for almost 5 minutes.
However, when the lately-maligned Ty Berry and the underrated Nicholson were on the court together, NU smoked the Bulldogs 47-30 in 21 minutes.
The starters (Nicholson/Martinelli/Barnhizer/Leach/Berry) went a combined 34-23 over 5 segments totaling 15 minutes.
In fact, the starters won each of those segments... 3-2, 7-5, 2-0, 8-5, 14-11.
When Berry and Nicholson weren't both on the court, the Wildcats got buried 41-22 in 19 minutes...

The 11-2 run that got NU back in the game (late in the first half) was accomplished with Nicholson/Barnhizer/Berry/Windham.

Angelo Ciaravino only played 2 minutes - when Barnhizer got a brief rest. If thats the only way Ciaravino sees the court, thats not so good.

Butler

Couldn’t watch the game but monitored online. Without seeing it, I was impressed they came back after being down a bunch early and brought it to a buzzer beater situation without Mart scoring tonight.

MN made free throws. Berry and Hunger seemed to contribute by trying to play hard D leading to their early departure.

I’m very curious to hear about the details but I’m not disheartened by this neutral floor loss by a bucket.

Where we stand

We had one good non-con win last year versus Dayton and one awful loss (Chicago State). They more or less cancelled each other out.

In 22-23, we had nothing good nor bad in the non-conference.

Saying all that, we need to get tomorrow since both MSU/UNLV look solid. There really aren’t any more non-conference “scalp” opportunities unless DePaul is legit (doubtful).

G-League - life in the NBA minors

It seems like the NBA's minor league system isn't that well understood.

Here is my understanding. I hope I have it right.

Each NBA team has 15 regular players on the roster during the season.
They can have 3 additional players on "2-way contracts" with the G-League.
Players on "2-way contracts" can be brought up to the NBA team and play or sit around watching.
The NBA team has complete control of these players and can release them at any point.

Typically players in the G-League have contracts with the G-League itself- they do not have contracts with the NBA franchise, even though the team is affiliated.
The "2-way players" are the exception and provide the roster link between the NBA franchise and a specific G-League franchise, which is usually owned by the NBA franchise.
There are 10 roster players and 2 "two-way" players per G-League team.
Most of the G-Leaguers comprise a talent pool of free agents.
Thus Miami can sign a two-way deal with a "regular" player on the Milwaukee G-League roster.
"Two way" players are then exclusive to the team that signed them.

The regular G-League player gets paid $40,500 for a 5-6 month season.
No one is allowed in the G-League with 4 years of NBA playing experience.
The "2-way" players get paid half of the NBA rookie minimum salary, whether he's with the NBA team or the G-league team.
The NBA rookie minimum is now $1.157 million. So half of that is about $578,000. Otherwise they're making $40.500. The G-League pays for housing.
Earnings can be guaranteed for players on "2-way" contracts. So a guy might be guaranteed $75k minimum when he signs his "two way."

G-League games appear to draw between 500 and 2000 fans per game, based on random box scores.

To summarize, there are about 450 players in the NBA, making anywhere from $1 million a year to $infinity..
There are about 90 "two way" players in the G-League, earning $578,000 a season.
There are about 300 "regular" players in the G-League, apparently earning $40.500 + housing.
Somewhat less than half of the G-League is made up of rookies.

D1 basketball has 350 or so teams, with 13 scholarships per team. so about 4550 players.

FB RECRUITING UPDATE: NU HAS NOT OFFERED TAQUAN ROBERSON

I have just learned that NU has NOT offered Ta'Quan Roberson from UConn. I apologize for the error, but I was just reporting what he told me. I have since verified with the program that while they have talked to Roberson, they have not offered him a scholarship. I'm not sure if the kid was trying to boost his profile a little bit, or if it was an honest miscommunication (that has happened before). Regardless, he doesn't have an offer.

Now we can go back to wondering who they are targeting in the portal.
