Sad: My loosely-affiliated class of 2002 tailgate group disbanded this season

I’ve attended about six over the years, but it had elevated to an event. Sadly, even those that had soldiered on with kids through the years decided that the combination of bad football and other things was too much.

I found out today when the “here’s what’s on the menu” email was instead a “sorry nobody really wanted to do it” email. I always looked forward to those emails.

An old article celebrating a Wildcat recruit

I found it an interesting read...
Here are some excerpts...

"When Mike Bajakian officially became Northwestern’s new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in December, he knew he would have to get to work quickly — the Wildcats still needed a quarterback recruit for the class of 2020... “I had my first phone contact with him, and in the conversation, he mentioned that he was set to graduate midyear,” Bajakian said. “But he was not happy with the offers he had available to him. I had a conversation with Coach (Pat Fitzgerald), we tossed it around a little bit, and before you know it we were having a conversation about bringing him in midyear.”
Just over a week after Bajakian took the job, Carl Richardson had committed to NU.

“He’s got an outgoing personality,” Bajakian said. “He’s very confident and he’s very attentive."

That outgoing personality was displayed at the annual student-athlete lip sync battle in early March, when Richardson performed the popular “Napoleon Dynamite” dance as the only solo act. He said defensive lineman Joe Spivak, who hosted the event, forced him into it, but still called it one of the highlights of his quarter.

“Coach Bajakian, knowing his background, knowing what type of mind he has about the offensive coordinator position was one of the biggest selling points,” Richardson said. “And Coach Fitzgerald, having that stability in the head coaching position and Northwestern being his alma mater, I could tell there was a tradition of winning and excellence with this program that I was so fired up to have the opportunity to be a part of.”

Mike Williams, Syracuse WR (remember his 2009 performance?) - not dead

I saw the news about this awful construction accident and it saddened me.

Mike Williams absolutely torched us in 2009 even when we had McManis - over 200 yards receiving and a couple of TDs. I think it was even that goofy game where Paulus, the former Duke basketball player, played his first collegiate game at QB.

I only watched replays of our 1995 Rose Bowl, and Williams looked like a smaller version of Keyshawn Johnson out there. It’s one of the few games where I couldn’t even be upset as an opposing fan- he just played out of his mind.

RIP…

The Athletic’s hit piece

Wow. Even @NUCat320 would think this is a bit savage:

Some gems:

‘And, at some point, someone caught sight of the T-shirt. … It was truly, as they say, a choice. As purposeful as it was obtuse. By the time Braun sat down for his first on-campus news conference, questions about the shirt and why people wore the shirt and what he knew about the shirt were in everyone’s holster, and Braun responded by saying “It’s not my business to censor anyone’s free speech,” when, in fact, it was his business as the leader of a team at a private institution to tell the people he’s in charge of what they can and can’t do.’

‘In reality, there have been virtually no good decisions for David Braun to make from the moment they rolled this dumpster fire to his feet and wished him luck. The choices, mostly, have been between bad and less-bad.’

‘These are the dark times. And not just because so many people have their eyes closed.
“We’re going to be a great team this year,” Northwestern linebacker Bryce Gallagher said after a 19-tackle day. “I know that. We have the people in that locker room and the coaches to do that. We’ll definitely get this thing going in the right direction.”

In fairness, there was nothing else to say Sunday, and certainly no begrudging a proud senior captain some blind optimism. Better to answer questions about bad football than bad behavior, after all.’

‘The relief, everyone said Sunday, was playing football again. It just also happens to be Northwestern’s next problem.’

BigTen opponent in San Diego this weekend

UCLA will be playing San Diego State this Sat afternoon at Snapdragon Stadium. It should be a nice venue for the future BigTen team.

The last time I saw UCLA play live was in the 2005 Sun Bowl game against NU which was brutal.

This was the only time I’ve seen a team (UCLA) score back-to-back td’s on onside kicks. This happened late in the game of course when NU was attempting a comeback. That was a crazy game. I think FloridAlum organized a steak dinner somewhere in El Paso for Wildcat fans.
It will be interesting to have BigTen teams on the WestCoast. My nephew, an Oregon grad, is a huge Ducks fan and still lives in Eugene so I could picture a trip up to see a BigTen game there with him and his wife.

Watching Duke Now

They may not have enough to beat Clemson tonight (though they are only down 7-6 late in the 2nd quarter right now), but they’re going to beat us by 4-5 TD’s. We may not score. They are much more active on defense and are just better all around. Amazing what a good coaching hire can do to a program. Elko knows what he’s doing and has got a good thing going down there.

What’s the timeline?

For hiring a new coach? We’ve got to have a new HC in place by November IMO if we want any hope of having any sort of recruiting class to speak of…

We’ll need to have a strategy regarding the transfer portal as well in order to help offset future transfers and to help fill out the roster. We won’t be able to compete until some adjustments/concessions are made in regards to admitting incoming non-grad transfers.
