Here's some good news for the board. We need a little...
EVANSTON, Ill. – For only the second time since the inception of the Winter Academic All-Big Ten award, the Wildcats surpassed the 50-recipient mark as 55 Northwestern student-athletes across five varsity programs earned the recognition, the league office announced Wednesday.
"Northwestern student-athletes continue to attain excellence in every facet of their higher education experience - in the community, in competition and in the classroom," said Combe Family Vice President for Athletics and Recreation Jim Phillips. "Our coaches and academic support staff have helped cultivate a culture of academic success that, combined with the unparalleled work ethic of our student-athletes, has created the standard in college athletics. The entire group continues to make the Northwestern family proud."
The total of 55 is just shy of the program record of 60 set in the winter of 2017.
Women's basketball tallied eight honorees, tied for the most among its league counterparts, while women's swimming and diving had 21 recipients, which marks the 11th straight year with double-digit winners. Northwestern men's basketball had five individuals earn the distinction, the men's swimming and diving program had 10 and wrestling had 11 representatives.
Men's swimming and diving, women's basketball and women's swimming and diving each surpassed their year-over-year total.
Coupled with a school-record 118 Wildcats who received the Academic All-Big Ten laurels in the fall, Northwestern has now earned 173 total honors for the year. The Wildcats have accumulated 200-plus total Academic All-Big Ten awards eight consecutive years.
To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, students must be on a varsity team, as verified by being on the official squad list as of March 1 for winter sports, who have been enrolled fulltime at the institution for a minimum of 12 months and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.
The Office of Academic Services & Student Development is a vital force in supporting the athletic department's mission of providing a world-class academic experience for student-athletes, providing a comprehensive array of programs and services.
The conference office also awards Academic All-Big Ten distinction in the fall and spring seasons and will present the Distinguished Scholar Award at the end of the academic year. To be eligible for selection, students must be a recipient of Academic All-Big Ten Recognition in the previous academic year, must be enrolled for the entire previous academic year (two semesters or three quarters) and earned a minimum GPA of 3.7 or higher during that time. This GPA shall be calculated based on the previous academic year only, excluding summer. The Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award was established by conference Faculty Representatives as an addition to the conference's Academic All-Big Ten program.
