An alternate view of B1G bowling

Thanks for the link. Maybe I am reading too much into it, but the article implies that Citrus is free to take Northwestern over MSU even if MSU ends up being ranked higher than us in the final CFB Playoff rankings. Alternatively it also implies that our head-to-head win against the Spartans may yet be a determining factor that puts us ahead for the Citrus Bowl selection.

Question whether the traditional rules imposed on the Citrus are subject to being altered when three B1G teams are selected for the New Years 6 ahead of them.

I know I've posted something similar, but this is pinned right at the top of the official Citrus Bowl Twitter account: https://twitter.com/CitrusBowl

@FCSports hosts the top non-NY6 picks from SEC & Big Ten/ACC in Orlando on New Year's Day at 1pm ET. Last year, LSU topped Louisville 29-9 in the 71st edition.

I guess it comes down to what they mean by "top" as to how much, if any leeway they have

Maybe that "Top" hat we just won gives us a semantic edge?

Doesn't sound like any sort of binding requirement based on the way that's written. (Of course, it's a tweet, so I suppose it's possible they left out the legalese.) But what bowl game doesn't claim to pick the "top" team available to them?

Yes, that statement could be subject to interpretation. For accuracy (if you don't follow the link to check for yourself) - this is what the CB has on their Twitter feed, not as a tweet, but rather as their description of what the Citrus Bowl is, listed right under their name.

They have then pinned a tweet from a random user explaining the selection process which seems to be given their stamp of approval. Here is that text:

"ACC Champ (or best available team if champ in Playoff) goes to the Orange Bowl. The ACC plays the highest ranked non-champion team among the Big Ten, SEC, OR Notre Dame."

Not quite sure how this ends up, but it is really seeming like MSU to Citrus, Michgag to Outback (I see as "agreed jumping") and then us in Holiday.

If Wisky loses the B1GCG, they could easily end up the "highest ranked non-champion team" and on their way to the Orange Bowl. That would remove the Citrus from the B1G bowl rotation.

Stewart Mandel just wrote on the Athletic that there are virtually no record requirements for Big Ten bowls, and that the Holiday and Music City Bowls both are believed to prefer Iowa over NU. But then he projects that NU will go to the Holiday Bowl anyway.

Would love for it to be the Holliday Bowl, in San Diego, but i have a hunch it will be the Citrus.

Local sources indicating Outback is not interest in NU.
Between the Sea of Orange in the stands, the unsold NU allotment and the massive egg that we laid on the field can this possibly be a surprise?

One of the goals of the current selection process is to avoid bowl fatigue, clearly a problem for the Badgers and the Floridian bowls in the past. Clearly we have a mini variant of this with the Outback.

I saw the same thing about Iowa as preferred to go to the Holiday Bowl over NU. Brett McMurphy had three NY6 bowls projected for the Big Ten, MSU to Orlando, UM to Tampa, Iowa to San Diego and NU to Nashville. That would be highway robbery, worse then the 2000 Bowl situation where NU was passed over for Tampa.

Also, USA Today has NU pegged for Jacksonville and Iowa in San Diego which is basically the same as the McMurphy projection.

I saw the Detroit News quote of McMurphy that Michigan is almost a lock for Tampa, FWIW. I "get" that MSU and UM could end up in Orlando/Tampa ahead of us, but it would suck for us to end up in Jacksonville or Nashville because Iowa gets the Holiday. No offense as to those fine cities intended.

FWIW Iowa put up Music City Bowl tickets on their website for a few minutes before taking it down earlier today.

Yep! Besides it was hot, and I foolishly wore a sweater>
Iowa over NU would be a travesty.
I can understand the “logic” behind UM or MSU coming here over NU but not Iowa. I think NU coming here with the 7 game win streak is a good story. Again playing teams like Kentucky or Miss State are not exciting. Playing a PAC12 opponent like Stanford, USC or Washington State is exciting.

It's not just a good story, we beat MSU and Iowa, and Michigag has a worse record. It's time the powers that be stop living in the past.

While it's not "exciting" it's certainly a team we can beat. I would like to bury Kentucky or really any low level SEC school.

OK, but what about "the massive egg" that the Vol fan(s) laid on the NU fan's windshield? Oh, that wasn't an egg?

OK, just saw SBNation's bowl projections which came out after today's final Tuesday CFB Playoff rankings. Even with a B1G team in the Orange (taking the Citrus out of the picture) they still have Northwestern headed to the Holiday Bowl. Of further interest they have us playing Stanford in the Holiday.

Notably Iowa, Michigan, and Purdue are relegated to the Tier Three bowls which respectively include Music City, Pinstripe, and Foster Farms. Only Michigan State shares a Tier Two bowl with us by going to the Outback.

Their B1G projections:

  • Orange (Miami): Miami vs. Wisconsin
  • Fiesta (Glendale, Ariz.): USC vs. Ohio State
  • Cotton (Arlington, Texas): TCU vs. Penn State

  • Outback (Tampa): Michigan State vs. South Carolina

  • Music City (Nashville): Iowa vs. Kentucky

  • Pinstripe (New York City): Boston College vs. Michigan

  • Holiday (San Diego): Northwestern vs. Stanford
  • Foster Farms (Santa Clara, CA): Purdue vs. Washington State

FWIW, on the BTN College Football Playoff Rankings feature they mentioned as bowl destinations for Northwestern, "The Citrus, Music City, and others."

It is looking more and more like that simply because Michigan State is ranked higher than Northwestern in this final Tuesday poll that will not be determinative as to whether Northwestern can receive a Citrus invite over Michigan State - a team with an identical record and against which we won head to head.

Yeah, right ... I have some swampland in Florida to sell the people at SBNation, too. Holiday isn't going to turn down Michigag vs. Stanford and Music City isn't going to turn down Michigag and send them to the Pinstripe. Not gonna happen.

Of course the B1G may exercise its contractual authority and do the placing so it won't come down to "turning down" schools that the B1G opted to place elsewhere.

The B1G would put NU in the Holiday AND 7-5 Iowa in the Music City before they'd put 8-4 Michigan in the Pinstripe? Sorry, I'll believe it when I see it.

I actually think that the rumblings from Nashville and San Diego suggesting their preferences for schools other than NU may well play into our favor in getting the Citrus Bowl slot. Putting us in the Citrus keeps the B1G's Tier Two versus Tier Three model intact so the B1G doesn't have to create a precedent of allowing a Tier Three qualified team to jump into Tier Two leaving an otherwise Tier Two qualified school (us) to find itself 3 or four slots below Michigan State - a school which has a tied record and also had been beaten by Northwestern.

The only thing threatening to keep us out of the Citrus is how "Top team" ends up getting defined between MSU and NU.

(Inasmuch as the College Football Playoff rankings exist for the sole purpose of determining who goes to the Playoffs and The New Year's 6 games they are arguably irrelevant with regard to the Citrus Bowl's requirement to take the next best team.

To my knowledge no one has been able to come up with any contractual definition of next best or Top team specifying same as the next highest team as ranked in the College Football Playoff rankings - a measure that is subjective as opposed to the objective record which would likely include head to head win as a tie breaker.)

Oh, OK the one other thing that would absolutely keep us out of the Citrus would be Penn State not being slotted into the New Year's 6 due to The B1G not getting 3 teams in the New Year's 6 and above or one of said three going to the Orange Bowl which would remove The Citrus as a B1G option. At this point it appears very unlikely that Wisconsin, OSU, and Penn State will not be slotted into a New Year's 6 or playoff game so the only real threat here is for one of those to get the Orange Bowl slot.

All of the above further assumes that The Outback is not a realistic option due to recency, although technically it might be.

Well, the Orange Bowl is threatening to keep us out of the Citrus, too.

Correct as noted in my added edit which I posted before seeing your comment.

Would welcome any thoughts as to what the motivations would be for the Committee to place a B1G team into the Orange as opposed to the other available New Year's 6 Bowls

You can bet your swampland that Michigan will be chosen ahead of NU for any of the remaining bowls. Really the most important factor for NU should be winning a bowl game and Kentucky or So. Carolina both seem like beatable candidates. Also remember that all conference schools share equally the bowl cash and it would be a lot cheaper to transport the team, support staff, band, cheerleaders, VIP'S and of course Willy to Nashville rather then somewhere in California.

The Orange Bowl is contractually obligated to take the highest-ranked non-playoff team from the B1G, SEC, or Notre Dame, excluding the B1G champion. There is no choice in the matter. For example, if Wisconsin loses the championship game and ends up at #5, they go to the Orange Bowl. If that happens, the B1G does not get a Citrus Bowl berth.

I am sure I will be corrected if wrong, but the conference covers the higher cost for the band , cheerleaders, etc,to travel to some bowls so not all schools get an equal dollar share which only applies after allocated expenses.
