I was taken aback to read that the Cats had 14 turnovers and only 10 assists versus Illinois. How bad IS that?, was my question. The answer is, small sample of course, but .71 is VERY bad nonetheless.
Going into the game, NU was 5th in Div I at a 1.57 ratio. Outstanding. After the game, still 7th at with 1.53. Still outstanding.
But that 10/14 ratio, if projected into the season-to-date rankings would make the Wildcats 338th out of all 347 teams.
I suppose one way to come out on top with a .71 assist to turnover ratio is to have some sharpshooter creating his own shots and hitting a high percentage of them. Or putbacks off missed shots. Or to have your team stealing the ball and taking it all the way to the hoop unassisted multiple times. I don’t recall many of those things happening in that slog of a game last night. Maybe we should be surprised the score wasn’t worse, huh?
