UCLA’s Mara is an intriguing prospect. We double and triple teamed him in this year’s game and still couldn’t stop him.
He would be a massive upgrade, with him and Nick on the inside, both likely drawing double teams, the perimeter would really open up for 3s. I imagine it will take quite a bag of nil to land Mara, especially as bigs are generally quite expensive this year.
A massive upgrade over who? Nicholson? or one of the incoming freshmen?
Mara was no better than Nicholson last year.
Evan Miyakawa had Nicholson as the 21st best player in the Big Ten this season, with Mara rated at #39.
Bart Torvik has Nicholson as his 81st best player in the Big Ten, with Mara at #87.
Miyakawa and Torvik use wildly different approaches to rating players, but both rated Nicholson higher.
Of course, I'd love to have Mara replacing Nicholson now... because Mara has upside.
That's the key and why this kid's NIL, probably higher than the already "higher than the rest big man NIL", is, most likely, out of reach for us (suggested also by the fact we heard nothing about him having heard from NU).
Yet, we supposedly have top half B1G NIL war heat and we recruit a poor man’s Big Matt.

I'm not questioning what you wrote, I'm assuming there are people claiming that - I just don't know how informed these "insiders" are.

Ok, but if this is accurate we got the funds to pay more than just Nick.
It’s almost as if “reporters” that run a subscription based fan site that caters exclusively to fans of one single university’s athletic programs will pass along whatever nonsense is fed to them by their contacts within the program… because if they don’t carry water for the program they’ll lose access and therefore can’t provide any value to their subscribers.
It’s not exclusive to the fine folks that run this site. Every single idiot running a subscription college fan site does it; they don’t really have a choice. But it’s really led to a collapse in quality sports journalism at the collegiate level.
