UCLA’s Mara is an intriguing prospect. We double and triple teamed him in this year’s game and still couldn’t stop him.
He would be a massive upgrade, with him and Nick on the inside, both likely drawing double teams, the perimeter would really open up for 3s. I imagine it will take quite a bag of nil to land Mara, especially as bigs are generally quite expensive this year.

A massive upgrade over who? Nicholson? or one of the incoming freshmen?
Mara was no better than Nicholson last year.
Evan Miyakawa had Nicholson as the 21st best player in the Big Ten this season, with Mara rated at #39.
Bart Torvik has Nicholson as his 81st best player in the Big Ten, with Mara at #87.
Miyakawa and Torvik use wildly different approaches to rating players, but both rated Nicholson higher.

Of course, I'd love to have Mara replacing Nicholson now... because Mara has upside.

It was in an article published by Lou. It surprised me as well.

It’s almost as if “reporters” that run a subscription based fan site that caters exclusively to fans of one single university’s athletic programs will pass along whatever nonsense is fed to them by their contacts within the program… because if they don’t carry water for the program they’ll lose access and therefore can’t provide any value to their subscribers.

It’s not exclusive to the fine folks that run this site. Every single idiot running a subscription college fan site does it; they don’t really have a choice. But it’s really led to a collapse in quality sports journalism at the collegiate level.

I'm going to assume that you are putting Lou in the "fine folks" category and leave him out of the "Every single idiot running a subscription college fan site" category.

Having written that, you make an interesting point. Propaganda or news... that is the question.

When Lou starts reporting that Coach Collins has world leaders calling him to negotiate (when they aren't) thats when I'll know Lou had crossed over to the dark side.

Exactly what benefit is it for “sources” to falsely claim NU is in the upper half of The B1G in availability of NIL funds?

If anything, it eliminates an excuse and puts pressure on the staff to use the funds wisely.

Vassar should answer for himself, but my guess is that he is saying that it benefits the home team journalist to publish whatever the school/coach tells him, basically as a minister of propaganda, in order to curry favor and increase traffic to the website.

Understood, my question was more to why would a statement like this be beneficial for the staff? Not sure why they would want this out there as I believe it intensifies the pressure to immediately win.

Oh sorry, I misunderstood. I think the coaches would put it out there that "we have money for players" to get prospective players (their agents) to pick up the phone and inquire. Short-term recruiting tool. Or its just part of the "We are a major player, but we get no respect" campaign that NU sometimes plays.

Yeah exactly. Every program says stuff like this to the people who cover their teams. It’s akin to when they talk about how great the new QB looks during spring practice. Or how the new transfer guard has absolutely elevated this team during offseason workouts. (And then sometimes once the season starts, you see that in fact that’s not true.)

My comment on reporters who run fan sites is that there’s huge pressure on them to keep a good relationship with the people who feed them info, because the viability of their site and business model depends on it. It’s very hard for them to push back publicly on what they’re told, because that may burn the only bridge you have. It’s a single point failure, if you will.

National guys can operate with a lot more freedom to express skepticism or push back on narratives/messaging being peddled by Programs; their audience and the scope of their coverage is broad. If a coach or program gets mad at them, it’s fine because they lots of other contacts/schools they can use to do their job.

It’s the same thing everywhere. IU fans think they can get Brad Stevens or Billy Donovan, in part because the folks who run their fan sites talk to boosters and contacts within the athletic department who feed them that scoop and they pass it on without much hesitation. As an Illinois fan, I stopped subscribing to an Illini fan site because they were doing the same thing. I didn’t like being given fan fiction for a monthly subscription.
