I bet he had already made up his mind and would have turned to the captains and said something like. "I think that is close enough, what do you guys think?" or he could simply have waited a couple of days and told the kid to keep working.

I agree - seems like a staged promo, where the coach was planning on giving it to him either way. Personally I'd make him lose the man-bun first
