Caught up with one of my favorite former Wildcats, Cam Ruiz, on Friday. A major special teams & nickel D contributor as a redshirt freshman on our 2018 B1G West champions (blocked punt that kept us in the game against Notre Dame, key PBU against Iowa to seal the win) and a starting DB on our 2020 B1G West champions.
Cam graduated on time & then grad-transferred to Temple & started there 2 years (using that extra COVID year) while earning his master’s, he’s now working in IT in Houston. He was in Chicago with his family for the St. Ignatius College Prep Athletics Hall of Fame induction of his dad Joe, who was my high school track teammate & classmate, three-time Chicago Catholic League champion and two-time All-State, and remains one of my close friends.
After the ceremony, we watched St. Ignatius basketball dismantle St. Rita, Alma mater of former Wildcat Mike Kafka. SICP won 65-25, and the score was 22-0 after the first quarter! Future Wildcat Phoenix Gill looked sharp with 18 points for the Wolfpack.
Just thought the Wildcat community would want to know that Cam’s doing well, 4-plus years after he last suited up in purple.
Go Cats!
