This is not a year where there is a Zach Edey, or even a Boo Buie or Terrance Shannon, where it seems like there are ANY players just obviously beyond the others in the Big Ten, and that's pretty cool, giving the possibility that Brooks Barnhizer or even Nick Martinelli could sneak in there with a good conference race for player of the year. Seems like the favorite now is probably Dylan Harper, as he leads the conference in scoring, but Rutgers is showing signs of being a below-average Big Ten team, and that could make a difference.

Right now there are only six players who hit all three of these modest numbers: 12 ppg, 4 rpg, 3 apg:
Dylan Harper (23.3, 4.8, 4.2)
Brooks Barnhizer (19.9, 9.4, 3.6) - Brooks also leads this group with 2.4 spg and 1.3 bpg
Braden Smith (12.9, 4.7, 8.3)
Kasparas Jakucionis (16.5, 5.7, 5.5)
Payton Sandfort (16.7, 5.8, 3.5)
Great Osobor (14.4, 8.9, 3.7)

Other contenders:
Bruce Thornton (16.1, 2.8, 4.9)
Dawson Garcia (19.2, 7.3, 2.1)
Nick Martinelli (20.6, 6.1, 1.8)
Brice Williams (19.7, 3.1, 2.3)
John Tonje (19.2, 5.0, 2.0)
Devin Royal (14.9, 7.8, 1.0)
Trey Kaufman-Renn (17.9, 6.6, 2.3)
Deriq Queen (16.8, 8.3, 2.3)

And longer shots (based on the numbers today): Ja'Kobi Gillespie, Nate Bittle, Malik Reneau, Ace Baldwin, Tyler Bilodeau, and Owen Freeman.

Is this thing Harper's to lose? Does Brooks have a chance? Does Martinelli? Could the all-freshman team (featuring Harper, Queen, and Jakucionis) beat the all-upperclassmen team? Did I forget anyone?

I am ready for the Big Ten to start in earnest next week. Bring it on, and go Cats!

I haven't followed poty historically, but it seems like recently it's really important that the team be up at the top of the conference.

It is a long season. And two guys on same team might divide the vote. That said, we will have to be near the top of the BIG and get to the dance again and if no one else really blows up, definitely a chance

Ok, let's do that then! Obviously I would prefer Barnhizer lose the individual award for a 14-6 NU team than win it for a 9-11 team, but I agree it's a long season, and Harper might hit a freshman wall.

I am saying that that is the way he gets it,\. If team doesn't make it he probably doesn't either

I think we need to check back in a month or so to see where these numbers stand for all these guys. We need some more in conference data. But I agree there is no leading candidate at this point.

i don't think a freshman has ever won Big Ten Player of Year.
Plenty of sophs and juniors have.
I doubt a grad student has won it.
