Well, yesterday was fun for recruiting addicts like me. Never hurts to land two guys with multiple high-BCS/P5 offers in the same day at a position that's been historically difficult to recruit at NU AND is a position of need given our current roster construction. With six commitments in hand (roughly a third of the class, by my math), figure now is as good a time as any to take a look at the tape of our commitments and other offered prospects that might end up in Evanston.

The Commits (In order of commitment)

LB Blake Gallagher -- not exactly playing top-flight competition, but strikes me as a tough-nosed player who's more athletic than one might guess at first glance. Probably a Mike/Will prospect, he has pretty darn good burst to the ball and decent size already. Always nice to get a commitment from a guy with offers like Duke, Maryland, Nebraska, North Carolina, Pitt, Virginia, Rutgers, and Syracuse 14 months before Signing Day.

OL Sam Gerak -- Lacks what might be called "ideal" size/length, but should be fine as a center prospect. Nice to see a kid who seems to snap and move pretty naturally, even if he does play some at guard on junior tape. A little surprised he didn't wait out Penn State a bit longer given his legacy status, but happy to have him as part of this class.

DL Sam Miller -- Not entirely sure why this kid wasn't more highly recruited, because his tape is pretty phenomenal. Doesn't have great size right now, but seems to have the frame to carry plenty of weight. Very good movement skills for a young kid his size. Should have a year to put on the requisite strength and size with our DT depth, then be an effective player sooner than later.

OL RaShawn Slater -- Plays some tackle and guard in HS, he's almost assuredly destined to be an interior lineman at NU. A little more of a project, he shows pretty good athletic ability and balance in pulling. Like most HS OL, has some of a tendency to play high and could use some work in the weight room. That said, he's got the requisite frame and athleticism to develop into an effective BCS/P5 OL.

(This is when the tapes start getting REALLY fun)

DL Earnest Brown IV -- Flashes some very good burst off the ball, especially for a bigger/longer kid. Pretty easy to see why he drew 26 offers in quick succession. Good athlete, good tape against good competition, good projection... could/should be fun to see how he progresses once he gets into a collegiate strength and conditioning program.

DL Trevor Kent -- Another instance where it's easy to see why he collected an impressive offer list. He's the kind of "jumbo athlete" we don't usually get at Northwestern. The only thing that's missing is the level of competition, but at least he's completely dominant on both sides of the ball (which is about all you can ask for in that situation). Also looks like he has the frame to get to 275 pretty easily while retaining his athleticism.

The Prospects

While I don't usually put too much stock into 247's "Crystal Ball" picks, I have noticed that Steve Wiltfong seems to vulture the system by making predictions only when he's heard a commitment is forthcoming. Wiltfong changed both of his predictions on the first two kids below to NU this morning, which I'm hoping portends good things to come. Combined with tweets from both Bowers and Fitz this morning about a commitment from Texas, it seems like he's at least halfway right.

DB Austin Hiller -- A longer, rangy athlete from one of the better programs in Texas, Hiller's offer list is mostly regional schools and Ivies along with NU. That said, I think he's a pretty good player in his own right, showing pretty good burst, athleticism, and playmaking for a guy who's listed at 6-2 200. Seems capable of playing a Brian Peters-type safety position or possibly growing into an OLB. We shall see if his commitment is verified, but would be another solid to the growing depth at the back half of our defense.

OL Ethan Wiekderkehr -- (At least I think he's an OL... he could probably play a couple positions) Another guy who would fit the "jumbo athlete" mold, he could probably play a couple of spots along the OL or DL. Based on what I've read, it seems like NU is recruiting him as a Blake Hance-style OT, moving to the OL full-time after playing TE and DE in high school. Based on his style of play, what looks like a lot of "projection" in his frame, and bloodlines (dad is/was a HS coach and I believe NFL player, maybe that was Grandpa), I think he would fit that mold perfectly. We need more guys like his in our OL room.

DB/LB Kyle Nunn -- A little surprised that he hasn't committed yet, Nunn seemed very interested in NU before getting a little more interest from BCS/P5 schools (Indiana, etc.). He's a pretty good sized kid that moves well for his size, kind of a "Pete Werner-lite" if you will. Probably fits best as a projection down to OLB, but could probably play safety if needed. A nice-looking athlete that would continue building speed on that side of the ball in Evanston.

From there, it's a crapshoot amongst a lot of highly-recruited players. It sure would be nice to land one of our "A-list" QBs in 2017 after missing out the last couple years (Jack Coan seems most likely, though Kasim Hill is a better fit for our offense in my opinion). Would also be nice to snag a true game-changing, impact pass catcher or two (nice to get Cameron Sullivan-Brown on campus but likely a longshot, Jake Marwede seems enamored with the "name" schools, etc.).

With a group of very solid prospects committed, the spring evaluation period should be fun for NU coaches. Let's see if we can continue adding to an already strong class.

gcg,
Thanks for a very informative recruiting post and player analysis.

What I like is that all 6 commits have the size to play Big 10 football immediately. Each one has the measurables and while they no doubt will need to add strength, these kids are big already.

Eh... the linemen all have some work to do, especially Brown if he's going to be anything more than a pass-rush specialist.

Why do you think CSB is a long shot? Seems Calcaterra will visit this spring too.

Does anyone have a grasp as to how many recruits we will take this year and at what positions? Certainly agree we need to hit on an A-list QB and WR and hopefully we can start regularly doing that. We are recruiting better along the OL and the DL and that needs to continue.

GCG mentioned above that he believes the 6 commits represent 1/3 of the class. That would mean 18 spots available. And looks like number 7 commit will announce soon.

As low as 16 and as high as 20 commitments. If we split the difference and assume 18, I think the scholarship allocation will break down as follows: Defense (9): 2 CBs, 1 safety, 3 LBs, 3 DL; Offense (9): 1 QB, 1 RB, 1 TE, 4 OL, 2 WRs. If we have 20 to give I would add 1 WR and possibly a scholarship Kicker/Punter.

If I remember correctly, Odenigbo came in around 205, so Brown is miles ahead of him. Alls I'm saying is in almost every case these 6 are bigger than the norm for incoming Freshmen at NU.

GCG, thanks for your usual, insightful recruiting class post. Look forward to the next installment.

My numbers are different Corbi. I have a minimum of 21 available schollies for 2017. Could be more if any of the 5th year eligible guys like Walker elect to go pro instead. I have also eliminated 5th year eligible guys that are not likely to be asked back. I am not accounting for walk-on schollies. It's my understanding those are year-to-year based on availability. Just adding our 2014 thru 2016 classes accounts for 55 schollies. Then adding 9 5th year schollies to reach 64. Leaving 21 for 2017.

I am not assuming any early NFL departures but 20 scholarships assumes 4 fifth year guys not coming back. The best way to figure this out is to go to the roster at nusports.com and sort by year of eligibility. Rather than counting departing seniors, I count returning scholarship players that I know will be coming back and then subtract that number from 85. Don't forget that the current roster does not include the 19 incoming freshmen on scholarship.

I go thru the same process Corbi. I have 3 5th year eligible seniors not coming back, and that leaves 9 5th years, 15 4th years, 20 3rd years and 20 2nd year players on the roster. Leaving 21 for the 2017 freshman class.

Check whether your fourth year guys are redshirted or not.

I rechecked my numbers and here is what I have. If everyone comes back for the 2017 season and no walk-ons get scholarships, we have 68 returning scholarship players for the 2017 season leaving us with 17 scholarships to give to the 2017 incoming freshmen class. The 68 breakdown as follows: 20 incoming true freshmen (FYI Carnifax is already included on the current roster), 15 RS freshmen, 5 true sophomores, 12 RS sophomores, 3 true juniors and 13 RS Juniors. Of the 13 RS juniors, I think that up to 4 may not be asked or want to come back. If you add those 4 to the original number of 17, that leaves us with a maximum of 21 scholarships to give to the 2017 freshmen class. I think my numbers and yours are only off by one and that may be because you are counting Carnifax twice.

Looking back at the film of Wiederkehr, Hiller and Andries, here are my thoughts.

1. How in the world could Hiller not be recruited more heavily? Really liked all aspects of what he showed on film. Agree with GCG03 that he's a solid addition to the team. Could be very special on special teams.
2. Andries is a stud OLM. Glad to see he's coming back next weekend. Would be as large a commitment as Brown IMHO. Great overall size, great feet and balance ... and a through the whistle nasty streak.
3. Wiederkehr is somewhat of a head scratcher for me. Hudl's film shows a very large young man primarily blocking down in small spaces against opponents giving up 100 lbs. or more. His downfield TE film does not show the athleticism I was expecting. Nothing like what Hance showed on junior HS film. Is this a case of making a significant projection as to what Ethan could be down the road? If that's the case, strikes me as a larger than usual projection for what is admittedly a very young prospect playing in a very large body. I trust the staff evaluation. That alone is a great reflection on Ethan. Just wanted to point out one person's view that the available film isn't as complimentary of Ethan as what we've seen with Andries and the first seven commits.

Thrilled with the early commits. But still focused on the need to land some WRs and a SB that can make plays in the passing game.

Man, I really like this class so far. It will be interesting to see how we fill our needs on offense.

With the recruits we have I think we should fill the rest of the class with 12 WR's

4 catches for 47 yards......killed it.

Hey, get your act together. First, you have to imagine what Coach Fitz would say if he were here.

Fitz would say something like, "Flynn is a young man who came in as a true freshman and gave us everything we asked for on the field and in the classroom. He's a hard worker and we're looking for good things from him in the future. I can't talk about his injury. It's a human body injury somewhere on his body, being a human, but Flynn is working real hard with our football performance staff, you know, facing that adversity, trusting himself, and he'll be back. Go Cats!"

(Now you're supposed to clap and bow, not necessarily in that order.)

I'd wager you that Nagel will have at least 500 yards receiving this year, but unfortunately you already lost your name to me...

I know you aren't addressing me, but I wouldn't take that bet if I were Fitzphile. Somebody has to catch the ball and I think Nagel is as good of a candidate as anyone else. Hard to imagine us winning many games with nobody reaching 500 yards. It worked last year--nobody had even 400 yards--but then teams realized that we couldn't throw the ball at all. Even then we still won against lesser talent. With this year's tougher slate, we have to find a go-to receiver because we will be required to pass.

I would take Vault over Nagel.

He may well. Given his injury shortened season in 2015, hard to know what he will put up in 2016. He was not a factor last year. Could be the second coming of Bates. I hope he is and will never bet against the Cats.

I hope you are right. We have seen Vault catch kicks but I'm not as confident of his pass catching, route running ability. He is fast but DBs are fast too and will make adjustments. The question to me is does he have the body control to go up and take it away from the defender and can we protect the QB long enough for any receiver to complete a route.

Vault is a very good athlete.
