Oh yeah. It’s gonna probably be 90/10 red/purple. That’s why ticket prices were so high.

It's literally the most lopsided showing I've ever seen at any game. I was counting over 100 OSU fans for every one of us. It's miserable in here.

Wasn’t much choice at the time given uncertainty of earlier-season games… though that was obviously also self-inflicted.
They could have held this game at Soldier Field. That was the only reasonable alternative to Wrigley.

No they couldn’t. The Bears play the Packers tomorrow at Soldier Field.
The alternative was to do this at lakeside, except we hadn’t planned for that when this was scheduled. I’m also not sure if the economics would have worked to do this lakeside if Wrigley was available. But I thought when we were trying to figure out what to do for this season we basically couldn’t make Soldier Field work because of requirements for the Bears.
I know the team is bad and they were not going to compete with the Buckeyes, but an 80/20 “home” game is embarrassing. And yes, our fans deserve some of the blame. Bad look for the many recruits we had there. “Welcome! We have no support!”
Horrible look. Honestly a miscalculation to bring many to this one.
My class had an event in Evanston that began at the same time as tipoff. My wife had to ask the bartender to change the TV to the NU hoops game. There were no more than 10 people out of 500 watching the game as it went into OT. Totally on brand.

Horrible stadium for football. Dumb from the start to play games there. Not worth it no matter how good or bad the NU team might be.
Wrigley looked pretty good on TV. Not ideal, obviously, but it has been improved each year.
I saw the final. Looked at the box score. Didn’t watch the game. Knew Leach scored a bunch and made a bunch of free throws. Perhaps took a brief glance at the basketball board last night.

Why wouldn't they? A weekend in a universally beloved city for football at a universally beloved baseball stadium, and in any given season a solid chance at a win. And then deep dish pizza afterwards! OBVIOUS appeal to VISITORS.
I totally get why we play games here. It would be nice if a slightly higher ratio of our fans felt more ownership and responsibility to the team.
Our fans are just as fickle as they come. I’ve accepted it as who we are. We will likely not get many casual fans unless we have a 1995/1996 style season. We got some in 2018 and probably would have in 2020 sans COVID but it is what it is. We are a small but mighty fan base. Look at what that’s done in hoops. Harder to carryover in football.
Never understood this point. USF and the Bucs both play at Raymond James with home games the same weekend. Why can’t the Bears / Soldier Field?
Because Soldier Field is technically owned by the Chicago Park District and they have very strict rules around field use.

Making the most of a bad situation, with an outmanned team and no home stadium that can accommodate the demand. Might as well make a whole bunch of money. Gotta think the powers were pretty pleased with how today worked out in the grand scheme of things.
The Wrigley games are miserable. They just create a big event for the opposing team.
I normally have railed against the Wrigley games. This year, I thought the lakeside park is/was crap and decided to buy a number of Wrigley tickets for OSU and Illannoy. We had 6 great seats for OSU in section 237. Easy in and easy out. My wife was thrilled with the baseball bat glass filled with a nice craft lager. I think when she looked at me, I had hair and was thinner.
Today, we had a great time at the game. It was a fun event. Anyone who thought it would be less than 75% scarlet is naive. We did not have one single negative encounter with an OSU fan. After the game, we went to a local taproom 4 blocks south of Wrigley which got slammed. Everyone, even the NU fans, were having fun. It was one of those circumstances where you just have to make the best of a situation. Frankly, it was a lot of fun.

I’m assuming NU fans didn’t want to shell out a lot of money to see their team get smashed. Maybe a better purple turnout for Illinois.
This thread is the same complaint every year. I hate to say this, but NU grads are just plain cheap when it comes to buying tickets. This includes folkson this thread. For years, the seats were dirt cheap. The alleged fans never bought the seats. You reap what you sow. If you are complaining about today’s game setting, buy season tickets. Any argument that I live out of town and I can’t attend is utter crap, Last year, 2 season tickets cost $700. Cheap as hell. If you are a diehard fan and don’t have 2 tix, you are the problem. Stop complaining. Today’s setting was due to you and your fellow alums. I am not a NU grad.
Braun addressed this in his post-game comments. He said once the product on the field is good, 8, 9, 10 wins, fans will come. Until then, just a small group of die-hard supporters.
Northwestern has never won a game at Wrigley.

If you live anywhere near Chicago, and most fans who go to games live in some reasonably close radius. (100 miles, 200 miles??) you have the chance to go to Wrigley at least 81 times a year if you desire.
A football game at Wrigley is a curiosity, but once you have seen one or two it’s not that big a deal.
Same as if I was going to a football game at Yankee stadium as a visiting fan I would think it was pretty cool, but I wouldn’t go back every year.
Sorry, but if this was at Ryan Field, there would be the same complaints of the sea of red, like there was on the Friday night two years ago. NU grads are just cheap tightwads who will not spend the money to support their team regardless of venue. If the NU degree is so valuable, they are earning plenty of cash. $700 for 2 season tickets is dinner for 2 at a high end steakhouse on a Saturday night with a couple of bottles of wine. Look at all the complaints about donations to get parking passes. They are just plain cheap. One NU grad friend spends a ton on the program. He is is the exception and comes to this board. Every other grad, I know and met are just plain cheap. The sea of the opponents in the stands proves my point.
I think his point was, NU needs to put a winning product on the field to draw fans. Wasn't the 2013 game at least half purple at Ryan Field? NU came in 4-0 and had game day and people showed up.
Of course if you win, people will come. That does not refute my point.
For the last ten years, between $500 to $700 bought you 2 season tix. The NU grads who love their university did not buy the tix. They were too cheap. Of course, the big games or bowl game, they show.
Let’s be honest here. On the game thread today, there were between 20 and 30 different contributors. These are diehard fans. How many do you think in the last 6 years ponied up between $550 and $700 to buy 2 seats to back their team? My guess is a handful at best. These are the diehard fans.
I was a season ticket holder (2 tickets) since my daughter entered NU in 1999. I added 2 tickets 12 years ago, NU now has me listed as having ST for 12 years not 25-correctable error -fat chance. I lived 1000 miles away and made 1-3 games a year but gave my tickets to board members, never sold them. Attending games at the beginning was fun, win or lose but for the last 10 years, it was painful to watch NU because of "complimentary football" with an offense from years gone by.
There are almost 12 million potential OSU fans and probably less than 100 K NU alumni , very few of whom ever had any interest in football
Coach Braun has the answer, field an exciting winner and support will follow. NU's administration should look at today's game and realize that allowing 85 superior athletes matriculate will eliminate the embarrassment of a red Wrigley Field
We have had this discussion weeks ago, months ago. NU has a small cosmopolitan enrollment, where only a fraction of NU students are from Illinois. Taking in account that the student body is upper crust with parents paying a small mint for them to attend NU, I think that their studies would take top priority. And let's be honest, the future of NU football is looking kind of bleak at the moment. You want to get butts in the seats, then win! I was excited initially about Braun and Lujan, but not so sure if the FCS thing is going to really pan out well for us now. As those that attended the game stated, it wasn't a good look for homecoming stands to be filled with 90% Buckeye fans. The program needs to gin up something positive and soon!
