Back later with some thoughts.

A couple things worth pointing out.
When Berry turned the ball over at the end of regulation, Reese had it for maryland and was looking to pass it upcourt when Nicholson reached in from behind and slapped the ball out of Reese's hands, off Reese's leg and out of bounds. Not sure why he wasn;t credited for a steal, but he wasn't. That set up the game-winning play, in which Nicholson's screen free up Martinelli.

In the table above, Nicholson benefit from the "It wasn't my fault" aspect of the Player+/-. When he was in the game, his teammates did not play well. When Fitzmorris was in the game, his teammates played better.

Mart was clearly the best player on the floor and won the game for us in OT, so how he can have a negative rating is beyond me.

Playing every minute of a game kind of makes raw +\- useless since it just becomes the how much you won/lost by. The adjusted player scores reward efficiency and box score stats. If your teammate is stuffing the box score while you’re on the court you’re getting dinged for it. Given it was a close win that he played every minute of, Martinelli had a pretty net neutral raw +\-, and he then got dinged for every single stat an NU player recorded throughout the game.

Understood, which, in my mind, makes the +/- rating insignificant and valueless.

Btw-no one on the BTN broadcasts mentions this-but Martinelli had only one other offer besides NU…Elon. Kudos to Collins and staff for seeing his potential.

Martinelli had 5 turnovers.
Five.
Turnovers are worse than missed shots.
He only had 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 blocks, 0 steals.
ThatKidFromHolland makes a valid assessment above - guys who play the whole game are starting from the final score and adjusting from there. Other players are getting credit for their contributions, as well.
Martinelli had a nice night shooting the ball - on the offensive end. He also made the game winning shot, so of course that sticks in people's minds. But if you turn the ball over 5 times, against 1 assist and 0 steals, that is a big negative. The negative offsets the positive.

It’s been stated before that the other adjustment that your +/- does not account for is the amount of time a player handles the ball. Please think on that when arguing Martinelli should so penalized.
