How do we fix the refs?

What’s it going to take to get a fair game? I saw Larry Scirotto before the game and that other cue ball clown and said to my family it’s going to be another one of those games. They didn’t disappoint. They had at least five calls that weren’t just wrong but criminally bad. It can’t keep happening game after game. At some point there has to be accountability in this league. What’s it going to take to fix this crap? End rant.

At least tonight some of that crap benefited our guys. I still can't believe Big Matt didn't get T'd up at least once for smacking guys on the head and in the face.

The blocking call on Martinelli where it was a clear charge and on top of that in no way had he started his shot. There was the out of bounds call at a pivotal time right in front of Larry off of Indiana players head and gives them the ball. There were others but it’s just so egregiously bad. I’m glad Collin’s said something tonight. I’ll chip in to pay his fine.

There really seems to be no accountability and it’s just unacceptable for big time college sports. The biggest issues IMO is these guys are too old to be officiating a game this fast. There needs to be some promotion/relegation system for officials.

Yeah, those were absolutely terrible, especially the obvious ball-on-head you could see from the concessions.

Ball off the head was absurd.
Offensive foul miss on Martinelli was brutal.

The refs compounded their brutal calls by prob giving us a makeup call on a missed goaltend which benefited us.

Yes that Larry guy always tries to make the game about him.

They did call basket interference in iu for hanging on the basket while the ball rolled in, which is a call the refs missed a couple games ago.

And they actually showed the replay showing just how wrong the call was, Looked like one of the refs was about to T up Collins,

They don't tend to call the charge in those situations very often these days. Out of 10 times it should be called a charge (in position early, outside of circle, well planted and not moving), only one or two get called as charges. Others get called as blocking fouls

Since I think highly of Robbie Hummel, I'll just point out that he said (about Martinelli's 4th foul)

"If that's not charging, I don't know what charging is."
"Martinelli was set and waiting and he lowers his shoulder and plows right into his chest."

Definitely. Overwhelming majority of charges tend to be push offs now. The classic sacrificing of the body to stand there and get run over is a courageous move that is seldom rewarded for some reason.

Seldom rewarded because diving underneath a player attacking the rim doesn’t lend itself to high scoring games watched by casual fans.

Hummel is the best color guy in hoops now for my viewing pleasure. He was spot on with this one.

Won’t be a popular take but NU benefited more from the bad calls/no calls than Indiana this game. Not drastically but still benefited more imo.

I saw bad calls on both sides. I did not see a goal tend on Ballo that gave us 2 points for example.

The foul that ticked me off was the 4th on Nick. The IU player clearly lowers his shoulder and initiates the contact. It's a terrible call that ends up in an and 1. It especially annoyed me because it was at a crucial time. It's the type you go back and point to if you lose the game. Refs miss calls, sometimes easy calls like the ball on the head one. But when it's down to the last few posessions, it's tough to swallow a really bad and easy call.

The ball off Goode's head was laughably bad, but Collins seemed to have the upper hand after that. I thought the refs allowed players to play, for the most part. No fouls on incidental contact after guys had gotten a shot up. There was plenty of that and it wasn't called. Big guys were allowed to play.

The Martinelli 3rd foul when he was called for charging was bad because Goode was moving laterally, even if Nick lowered his shoulder (which everybody does when going at the basket).
The Martinelli 4th foul was much worse - obvious charging - Martinelli was stationary and shifted slightly as he got run over.

But other than those, these refs didn't disrupt the game - and thats an improvement!

I'm curious if the NU fans on the sidelines are less intimidating that in other venues? I feel like on TV there are some really outrageous super fans in other arenas.

You lost me there.
Just meant the officiating has moved away from calling those old school charges where defenders stepped into the path of the freight train because it produced a less-appealing type of basketball to watch. More fouls, less rim attacking, more dangerous situations. Offensive player gets the benefit much more than a decade or two ago.

Yup. He’s awesome. And literally on CBB TV every night it feels like he’s almost my roommate lol
The main reason I like him is that he is way less afraid than others to just say he disagrees with refs of coaches. He's not trying to antagonize, but he voices his opinion. I can agree or not, but always appreciate hearing an opinion that is not just worried about not caussing a fuss.

Contrast that to Bardo, who I think does a fine job on most of the commentary, but is always trying to find a way to agree or understand the refs. And is always sucking up to the coaches, just repeating what he's heard. It's not critical thinking. At all. Just too much of not stirring any pots.

When Coach K retired, they finally grew the (nerve) to eliminate the ridiculous "slide in under an airborne player and draw a charge" that was so engrained at Duke.

I think he means for the rating sake, people want to see a slam dunk not an awkward collision.
I much prefer seeing a defender attempting to block a shot by jumping straight up (which is allowed). Standing under a shooter is not really a basketball play in my mind. What Martinelli did was different. He established good position on a ballhandler who then lowered his shoulder and initiated contact. Absolutely a charge and a call they should make every time.

We live in a time when regulations don't matter. It's now the time when the refs make up the rules. What do we expect?

Blocking/reach in/ hand check fouls early in the game are called randomly in the big ten. Usually benefits the home team but can go either way. And worse for the product and for the conference come in March. Its a huge issue

I couldn't agree more.
