Jack Lausch - NU Diamond Thread

Things are getting interesting for our Diamond Cats. They have a big double-header today against Purdue. Cats need to come away with no less than a split in order to keep their BTT hopes alive. The next six games are interesting; 3 at home against B1G cellar dweller Ohio State (boy, that was fun to type); followed by 3 on the road against an elite UCLA squad. A sweep vs OSU is a must as the likelihood of winning one in Westwood is slim. There’s a decent chance NU can finish at 15-15 in conference play; which would be an incredible accomplishment for Greenspan’s squad.

Go Cats! ⚾️

Jack’s hitting has really improved. After 2+ years of no baseball, it’s much more difficult to find your hitting groove vs. fielding. Jack has run like a deer in CF from the beginning of the season. Fun to watch his progress.
Maybe he should focus on baseball??

Boy, watching the UCLA game. I'm stunned how few fans are in the stands. UCLA is ranked and is located in major metro area. I looked at a couple of their home game box scores. Crowds around 1,000 are the norm. We can draw more for lacrosse. Even game against USC only drew 1800 (USC home team). Compare that to SEC games.

Looks like the Cats still have a great shot to make the tournament and would be the 11 seed today... but they need some more help or another huge upset over UCLA. They're tied with Illinois and one game ahead of Michigan State. Both are playing the two worst teams in the conference in Minnesota and Ohio State while NU plays UCLA. NU has the head to head tiebreaker with Illinois but MSU has it against NU. Illinois beat MSU, so a three way tie comes down to common opponents, and I have no idea who is left out in the cold in that situation.

Thanks for breaking it down for us.

Let's be real ... it's still an uphill climb to make the Big Ten Tournament... we seem to have 1 game of pitching depth left at this point per weekend, which ... hey, it is what it is.

This year is an unqualified success regardless. 25 wins and we won at least 1 game in EVERY Big Ten series. Yeah, no idea the last time that happened. In two years we've gone from the laughing stock in the sport to a very legit Big Ten program. Even with a very young pitching staff. A young staff that showed promise a lot of times, but let's face it, this is a LONG season for them. So ... the big thing is being serious enough about our revenue and our culture and our coaching that we maintain the majority of our players ... and that we keep moving up. Coach Greenspan is fantastic and I hope he's around for a few more years until someone throws a lot of resources at him.

Meanwhile, let's hope for another W or two. This has been a fantastic year.

Terrific post. It’s truly amazing how quickly Greenspan has turned the program around. The future is bright. Let’s hope the administration gives the staff the resources they need to stay competitive.

Of course, being greedy, I'd still love to make the Big Ten Tournament ...... but we can't lose sight of what has been done in 2 years.
