Javon Pickett just decommitted from Illinois

Please tell me GCG if anything I just noted was untrue.

I cannot for the life of me figure out how to post or embed a screenshot in these message boards, but it's of WillyCat calling for Cushing's head on the football board not even 24 hours ago... yet he's crucifying me because I'm happy Collins figured out a way to get rid of 5 or so players that weren't B1G level.

Ok

He's definitely a Wildcat fan and, whatever phrasing you would like to use, Collins definitely had five guys leave the program after taking over.
Fine, yet none were recruits who had yet to step a foot on campus, which was the original bone of contention that I pointed out, regarding Underwood. The 5 guys you referenced figured that their playing time would become limited and chose to transfer or in Turners case give up playing.

First, I also don't like the early call of Play of the Game but as you said, it's sponsored. So that cash helps to make it possible so an extra donation is not needed to purchase season tickets. Guess you can believe his lies regarding his support of Collins but he is just trying to cover his a--. Think about his statement in a thread regarding Underwood running off a player/recruit at Illinois. He says well Collins ran off 5 players also. If you agree with that, then we have nothing to discuss further. I now have Chicago---fan on ignore, so I won't have to see his love, hate or lies.

Collins did run off 5 players. To the extent that he told them what their roles were gonna be and they weren't happy and left. I call it running them off and I think it was a good thing. If we hadn't run off Turner, Ajou, and Abrahamson, we wouldn't have had room for 3 guys currently on the roster. Kreisburg didn't get the scholarship or role that he hoped for and decided to leave, but I'm not sure we can count that as a scholarship gain. Collins did the right thing in not offering him one. Vassar was one that didn't work out, but 4 out of 5 ain't bad.

For those who stayed and played more limited roles than what they probably expected under Carmody - Taphorn in particular, but also Sobo - good on them.

And now you're moving the goal posts.

This is all I was trying to say. That doesn't make me less of a Cats fan because I am glad he did that.

As I said, dems da breaks

Guess you have forgotten the original post by Chicago---fan, where he states that Collins ran off 5 players when he took over at NU. He responded with that lie to someone mentioning that Illinois new coach just lost a commitment from a recruit.

I think you're mixing up your chosen people during Passover week.

Big Ivie was a grad transfer and only had a year to give. The Jewish Dwight Howard was a walk on.....never on scholarship.

But Collins did...

OK, I can see you want the last word. So if you want to believe that's true, then name the 5 players and the circumstances. Have nice day.

Ha! Every single player has been mentioned on this thread, including by yourself. I'm not entirely sure what your little "campaign" is on this thread, but it's pretty funny.

Actually the joke is on you. Every player that left the program did so by choice. My "honest"campaign is to rebut a poster who lied when he stated that Collins ran off a recruit. Everyone of those players that are no longer at NU played a least one year for a coach and a system that they were comfortable with, however the new system brought in by a new coach didn't fit their style of play. Therefore they choose to transfer or stop playing.

1. You don't know this to be the case.
2. If it is indeed the case, which it could or couldn't be, Collins told them they'd never, ever see the floor. Effectively running them off.

It's not a hard concept.

Wasn't Kreisburg a grad transfer with only one year left?

Don't recall a couple of those guys staying a year.

If a guy is not a fit for the system you are trying to install, isn't it better to give him an opportunity to find a more appropriate home? Otherwise, he wastes two years. One on campus and then has to sit out a year. Doesn't help if he was not highly recruited and then he might be better off pulling a Turner or Vassar to get education paid for. .

You must not be an NU fan

Both Turner and Vassar got their NU education paid for and are not on the roster.
Yes we know the Vassar story or at least we think we do. However I don't think he stayed on a BB schlorship but received some kind financial aid.

I think it is the same for Turner where he ended up on a different kind of scholarship. That is my point. They ended up with their education paid for

And that's really our only obligation. If they aren't good enough, they shouldn't have any expectation or entitlement to play or even stay with the team. They are welcome to transfer if they don't like it.

Illinois released both Tilmon and Pickett today. I'm betting Tilmon winds up at Mizzou, which got commitment this week from Blake Harris, a 4-star guard who originally signed with Washington. Mizzou is also in the running for Kevin Knox, a 5-star wing player who visited over the weekend--and of course, they are one of many schools still pursuing Mark Smith. They could put together their own little Fab 5 in about a month.

Harris, Knox, Tilmon and Smith. Are we missing anyone?

And three schollies available.

Besides the whole "four-year scholarship" thing, which is the crux of the Johnnie Vassar situation.

I think Martin may have put himself in a tough spot now by landing (potentially) a top 5 class... he needs to actually win to prove he can coach. If he fails to make a lot of noise this season, that'll be two stops with big time recruiting classes without the on court success to match.

Also, does anyone else get that feeling you'll be watching a 30 for 30 on this class / team a few years down the road, and not for positive reasons? I have a very hard time believing this kind of massive leap forward in recruiting happens while keeping everything on the up and up.

Martin proved at Cal that he could recruit. But he never proved he could coach. That Cal team of his over the past three years had as much or more talent than anyone in the country. They tanked this season and made the NIT- where they failed by losing to some directional other California team. The previous two years they did essentially nothing in the NCAA tourney. I don't care who commits to Mizzou- Martin has shown he doesn't have the skills as a coach to do anything with a plethora of NBA talent on whatever team he is coaching. If he lands a top 5 class- they might make the tourney- but they will lose like Martin coached teams do in the first round like usual. To summarize, Martin is a loser like Ron Zook. Period!

So, you're saying you don't like Martin? :p

We shall see. I grew up in the St. Louis area and rooted for Mizzou as a kid. It will be interesting to see what their final class looks like and what Martin and staff do with it. One thing is certain: they'll be a helluva lot more interesting than Anderdon's teams.

Don't you feel there is a Wizard of Oz moment complete with smoke mirrors and bags of gold?

I agree. I also have the same feeling about Travis Ford at St. Louis.

Well the first hint of that may have been the hiring of a top recruits father as an assistant coach. Also seem to remember that he has had some previous run ins with the NCAA. Time will tell but it is a bit odd that the University of Missouri is now a basketball hotbed.

Man we are a jealous lot around here. Mizzou used to be a consistent top 25 program until Anderson ran it down. They have a beautiful new arena and one of the best student sections (The Antlers) in the country. Sure they landed Porter by hiring his dad. But good players want to play with other good players. Porter Jr has been recruiting non-stop since he committed to MU. Listen I'm not naive, I never assume any Power 5 program is squeaky clean. But there is no evidence that Missouri is doing anything illegal here. They are riding the Porter wave.

Yeah so we gave him 4 years. That was the deal. We held up. Unlike almost every other school which would have kicked him to the curb long ago.
