I realize that the people on this board are generally bored (you see what I did there?), but I must admit that I am ashamed by the lack of class and dignity shown by the majority of posters. The discussion on this board has centered around two subjects:

1) Trash talking with TN fans
2) Calling for McCall to be fired

Neither of these are appropriate topics for public message board discussions.

It has gotten to the point where I think that we should have a separate board for people juvenile enough to enjoy engaging with rival fans on subjects such as "Memba" or "Redneck Rhapsody".

On the subject of McCall - he is the OC for a 10-win team at NU. His passing offense has been sub-par this season, but the run offense has looked great and he gets credit for that, just like he gets blame for the pass offense weakness. Overall, I would grade his performance from this season a B-, which I realize is not great, but is certainly not worthy of the vitriol we have seen from posters here. Let me make it clear - I support McCall and Fitz 100% and will continue to support the program monetarily as long as they are involved.

There is a seperate board called the Rock.

Oh, please. Spare us the sanctimony. McCall deserves to be criticized and questioned (along with Springer) for the putrid performance of the offense. This is a public message board and talking about NU football and sharing opinions about it is exactly what is appropriate. What is inappropriate is the BS board police trying to tell people what they can or can't say on a PUBLIC BOARD.

For that matter, trash talk with opposing fans is a way of life on athletic message boards.

Take a chill pill.

I started the Norm Chow for OC thread in a mostly lighthearted way because, hey who knows? Maybe Ball State hires him away and why not? 10 win OC for the Big Ten. His name has been tossed out.

Same with OL coach Cushing. Maybe he gets an OC opportunity somewhere, isn't that how Kevin Johns left?

And I can assure you no-one on the team or coaching staff takes any of our idiotic ramblings to heart. I work in an industry that is also in the public eye and there is a message board out there dedicated to my company (and in a certain sense, me) and I never check it because I know 1) They don't know what they are talking about 2) It i useless to try to get online and reason with them because they don't know what they are talking about (and they will never be satisfied).

Relax.

Couldn't agree more about raising the level of decorum on these boards the last couple weeks. We could decide that we don't need to be a fan base with an accepted segment of very poor sport trash talking. I would have felt better about our loss if we did it with good sportsmanship leading up to the game, but these boards became unreadable in the days before the game...from both sides, which was surprising and disappointing. It's actually pretty gratifying to be faced with some antagonizing, immature attacks and then realize that you have the fortitude and self discipline to take the high road. We're not teaching that style too often these days, and the Internet isn't helping.

The only place Cushing might receive an offer from is alma mater and he would need to take a pay cut.

Perhaps it is sanctimonious to share your expectations that Northwestern fans behave in a dignified manner, but I make no apologies for doing so. Whether we like it or not, every one of us that posts on this board represents Northwestern and our football program in a very small way. Ask yourself how your contributions have reflected on the program and on our university. Unfortunately, most of the postings here have been juvenile or defamatory, and it is a shame because Northwestern, Fitz and our program deserves so much better.

Thank you! I was concerned that I was the only person on this board with any sense for the joy of setting and living up to high standards.

I have to side with EvanstonCat. There's a difference between supporting the team and cheering them on and mindlessly accepting every flaw without any thought. Just because we critique the program doesn't mean we love it any less than you do.

Great? We ranked 42nd in rushing offense with 188.5 per game (4.09 per carry).

I give a lot of the credit to Justin Jackson, too.

Only one RB in the entire B1G gained more yards on the ground this season than Justin Jackson (Ezekiel Elliott). If you really think that this success was solely due to his individual abilities, than you should apply the same thinking to the failure of our passing game and blame it on CT. As I mentioned in my original post, I would grade McCall a B-. His offense was hardly great, but there were positives, such as the run game, and it was good enough to get us 10 wins.

I am very excited to see how McCall leverages JJ, CT and the rest of the returning offensive starters next year, when they all have an additional year of experience under their belt. I firmly believe that the sky is the limit in terms of the potential of our offense.

If the organization you were in charge of had done poorly for three straight years, wouldn't you expect to be criticized?

I like poop.

Of course I would expect to be criticized. In that vein, I assume that Fitz has regularly given McCall constructive feedback intended to improve his performance.

Some important points:

1) The feedback on this board is not made in private, which is how respectful criticism ought to be delivered.
2) The feedback on this board is not made with the intention of helping McCall or our program. Instead, it is made with the intention to ease the pain of a tough loss by defaming him.
3) The feedback on this board is not made by those who have developed trust with McCall and could therefore expect to have any positive impact on his performance through criticism.

In sum, the feedback for McCall on this board solely serves to gratify the writer and ease the pain of a tough loss. McCall deserves better. I am sorry we lost, but we should manage through the pain with class rather than obliging our base instincts.

No, McCall does not deserve better. How anyone after watching this debacle can say he deserves a B- is insane.

We won 10 games IN SPITE of the offense, not because of it.

He has an opinion. Should he be called "insane" for having an opinion that differs that yours? Great to see that you took a thread on decorum as an excuse to attack another poster. Rock on, ECat and McCall haters!

Guess what, McCall is going nowhere. NOWHERE!

In sum, you have described the purpose of fan message boards and sports radio calls. No one here is saying McCall should be pummeled or hurling insults or something. Go give me a break.

Unfortunately, toward your point, the football games are not played in private either. Plus, we PAY to watch them. Thus, we pay for the privilege of critiquing them, in public. From what I've read, no one has said anything about McCall of a personal nature or gone beyond stating what is obvious now--that our offense is dog poop. McCall just happens to be in charge of it.

Guess you didn't think these attacks on McCall did not go beyond stating "what is obvious now" and were perfectly legitimate criticism (and these are what I found in just a minute of searching of posts since Friday-- certain there are many more, not counting the comments that were deleted by the mods)

Well, there's an exception to every rule and Mr. Stupor is one of those. If we judge this board by Stupor, of course it will be a negative picture.

English language lesson time. If I say, I give "a lot of the credit" for the rushing attack to Jackson, that's not exactly saying it's "solely due to his individual abilities" but whatever.

Sorry, but that's ridiculous. Almost all of it.

If "respectful criticism" should be "private," then I guess there's no room for thought-provoking criticism published in any newspaper or magazine.

Yes it's an opinion. But, how can anyone sane possibly justify a B- for what is one of the worst offenses in college football????

Grade inflation is rampant everywhere including NU.

Grade inflation involves pushing things up to a plus or perhaps a letter grade. How do you justify a straight out F (which inflated would be a D) into a B-?

Well, if what he is in charge of has failed, and if he's gotten constructive feedback from Fitz that you expect he's gotten, and he's still failed, then what's next, GoUNU2005?
