NU-Dayton second-half thread

This team has to learn to win this type of game. Get it done Cats!!!

We had to overcome 3 teams in the second half: Dayton, NU, and the stinkin refs.

two thoughts.

Dererk's hand cannot heal fast enough.
Bring on IUPUI. Right, Palindrome?

We hung on to win. Huge win considering no Derek Pardon. We played not to lose and it cost us. Hopefully we can build on this win. A third Butler/Norte Dame type loss would have been a real dagger to the heart. This is a coaching issue that must be corrected. We have to develop the killer instinct when we have a big lead. A win is a win but this win is a resume' builder. The athleticism and talent is there. The coaches have to work on the mind set to expect victory and to play with confidence down the stretch.

CC was pretty vocal and passionate down the stretch. He was challenging the team to be tough. Not sure what more he could do.

There were things we could do. Once we had the press broken, we could have attacked the rim, but pulled back every single time and then failed to get any good shots off.

I think the primary problem in watching tape is that Dayton overplayed our standard press break, which is typically either pass wing, then middle then wing, or direct to middle then wing, which they forced us into coffin corner or wing to wing passes (including the one where Law go mugged).

I think that the typical way to counter this is to outlet pass deeper middle (which we famously tried to do against ND, with terrible results) or straight deep, but looks like we did not recognize the adjustment and continued to try to run our stuff against a sold pressing team that knew what was coming. Would be interested in others thoughts on this since I could certainly be incorrect.

I do think that a personnel adjustment that we made (adding second PG in Brown) did help, though since he is qucik and far less likely to be coffin-cornered or otherwise trapped.

A good comparison is late in the Wake Forest game, where we carved up their press with our standard press break. It was a thing of beauty....
