I think players are inspired to play against ranked teams and prepare better.
Isn't the more accurate interpretation that NU, when it gets ranked, is roughly the #20-#40 team and, when NU gets into the top 25, it's a confluence of events that contribute?

So, NU is not 'bad' when in the top 25... NU just regresses back to the true skill level...the mean, if you will.

I will always take being in the top 25 over not.

What I would like to see is a comparison of whether we were actually favored in games in which we were ranked. The sample size is simply very small here and there is no trend - several of these are easily explained and were not a result of us getting too big in the head due to a ranking. Even this weekend, we are ranked and Duke is not, and yet they are favored by 3.

Absolutely!

Similarly, we would be ranked ONLY after we win a majority of our previous games, which presumably is because it is the weaker part of our schedule, 2014 notwithstanding. If we were to play NEB, OSU, MSU and Minn on successive saturdays, we would likely not be "ranked" going into the next game. Yes, of course there are some upsets here and there, but typically we would win some non-cons and maybe an early B1G tilt, but then face a gauntlet and lose 2 out of 4 at minimum. Nothing wrong with that, but we drop when we lose.

So we are ranked after we beat a few teams that we should beat, then face some tough teams. This would be the same for any team.

Positively! NU could be 7 & 0 heading to UNL. The next 4 games are very winnable and yes I know they could also be loses, still none of the remaining schools on the schedule scare me, except maybe Wisky in Madison.

I think this is exactly it, coupled with the fact that it is simply very difficult for all but the best teams (relative to their competition) to string together 6+ wins in a row, which is what we would usually need to do to get ranked and then keep winning.
