OT: Legalizing Sports Gambling Was a Huge Mistake (Atlantic)

Both. There is a reason why it’s led to the greatest explosion of human prosperity in history. It is also the least exploitive and freest economic system ever implemented by any social group larger than a small family or tribe

Honestly, I don't think you have a good handle on how capitalism is defined (theory) or works (reality).

Regardless It can be a successful economic system while also being largely, even fundamentally, exploitative.

Great… I can’t wait to see a hundred FanDuel commercials per game

"I bet you $100 Northwestern scores a touchdown on this possession."
"I don't bet."
"What do you mean you don't bet?"
"I don't bet!"
"Oh come on, I bet you $50 I can get you to start betting."
"I said I don't bet!"
"I'll give you 3-1 odds."
"You're on."

Is that 3 to 1 on NU scoring on the next drive still available?

We all agree that there are too many d*mn sports gambling ads, but also, the evidence is pretty clear that legalized gambling decreases savings, increases bankruptcies, and even increases domestic violence.

I’ve got several former colleagues who now work to make payments at one of the major online sports sites more frictionless; to me, it’s as bad as if they were working for Phillip Morris in the 90s.

Gross.

I can’t remember if I commented on this thread or not but…

Most Western countries have legalized gambling and manage just fine. Like a kid who starts binge drinking the moment they move away to college, we’re experiencing the growing pains of being granted a new freedom. It will be fine.

1. Not trying to start a political fight here, but see also: guns. Somehow we haven't quite figured out how to manage them so well.

2. My European friends laugh at how obsessed we are with watching college students play sports. I think my concern after hearing that European soccer has basically been infiltrated at literally every single level of the game by gamblers influencing the outcomes of games...our college players are sitting ducks for this, which is to say nothing about the refs.

That’s not analogous. It’s more like alcohol or weed - a “vice” that suddenly becomes available so people get excited about partaking. Most kids who binge drink grow out of it. States that legalized marijuana transitioned to that just fine without a statistically meaningful uptick in crime or “gateway addiction” or whatever. With sports betting, people are just reacting to being able to do something new. They eventually get bored of it.

I think the better analogy is smoking cigarettes. It's legal and anyone can do it. Some people try it, but don't make it a habit for whatever reason. Some people, unfortunately, get addicted to it and it can be devastating. To address this, we kept smoking legal, but curtailed advertisement so as to not actively encourage people to start. The problem with gambling now is that it's being advertised like crazy. Young people are being strongly encouraged to try gambling. I agree that 95% of people will get bored and move on, but a large number of people won't be able to. Just because it's now legal, doesn't mean we have to pretend it's a good thing to do.

Seems like a lot of research has gone on in the last few decades determining how best to addict people to online games and micro transactions, and the gambling industry is late to the game but has a much broader appeal.

In fairness to both of us, I'm looking at the analogy with regard to how betting can, will, and has impacted the sport of college football as a whole; not so much about the individual bettors.

What annoys me is guys in bars nowadays not even caring about the score but how many yards so and so has, and whether or not teams x and y will combing to "cover the over". Ten years ago I'd hit the sports bar near my house and you'd get guys with all sorts of jersey's and there would be good natured back and forth, it was fun. Now it's all a bunch of hustlers "rolling over the money line" and doing a "Noon to Night Parlay" and so on. They don't even care who wins as long as when team x plays team y the total scored will break 53.5

Wow. Yeah. Go team.

Yeah, FF did that long before DFS. Can't hate too much. That said, I think it's changed how an entire generation approaches fandom. Kids today no longer irrationally hate everyone not on their home team bc some of their rivals can still help their fantasy roster. And that's akin to a war crime, imho.
