You just love to see it. Btwā> retiring a guys number who played 2 seasons? I appreciate the players that are on the cats for the full four.
When you have the chance to retire the jersey of a one-time 3rd team All-American you gotta do it.

And for an alumni day, why not bring out the alumni players at halftime and give them a little recognition? Instead it was some local young dance squad (which is nice) but would have liked to have recognized the alumni.

Yes. I was expecting to see our basketball alumni recognized at halftime.
Because thereās more to life than basketball and if you arenāt an absolute star odds are youāre going to need to get another job. And finishing later? Yeah right lol.
Who gives a shit, he's making over $2.5 million per year to play basketball this year and next year, and probably another $ 8 million total over the following two years, then he's a free agent.
He's an absolute star. He's got a $13 million contract, $5 million of which is 100% guaranteed. That's what happens when your'e a first round pick in the NBA. He isn't fighting to make the team in Belgium.
For me, I want to guy to graduate before I hang his jersey from a rafter.
But I'm a purist and hope to remain one.
Sorta an impossible thing to maintain in the current day. Even if a guy isn't a transfer, as so many guys are now, you're realistically retiring mostly players who were the star guy on a deep tourny run if you're a top program. Those types of guys don't stick around, they go to the NBA.
Retiring numbers in college, especially basketball, is sort of awkward these days as a result. Guys transfer around, they don't stay, etc. Yeah, in the rare case you have a guy who stays for four years and sets every record it's easy, but what about guys who show up for one year, break every record, and deliver a national championship? It's just a weird situation now.
Anyway, I was talking exclusively about valuing if guys graduate relative to the rest of their life, not about retiring numbers. If Illinois had a fun time retiring Shannon... I hope they had a nice time, I won't yuck their yum.
Illinois seems to basically be a 1-2 year program now. No one seems to be there that long. It is what it is in this era, as a fan and ticket holder for nu it is nice to get to follow the players for 3-4 years while appreciating the 1-2 guys a year that come in via the portal.
I was taken by surprise they didn't come out and wave at halftime or maybe a tv timeout. That's what has happened in the past, or at least that's what I remember.
As for the number thing. I admit I just feel bad for people when dumb stuff like that happens. I get my schadenfreude elsewhere.
And I believe retiring a number is a huge deal and should be for a very limited number of superstar/heroes who are that at the school itself where they play all the years of their eligibility. A reasonable amount of time should pass before the retiring and probably some evaluation of what kind of people they've become in the world.
Hoisting Shannon's jersey just cheapens the value of the ones already up there imho.
I know he was a talented guy, but did he actually accomplish anything during his time there? I have no memory for IU basketball, but I know they didn't win any championships. Did he win league MVP? Did he break any IU records? What did he do other than go to the NBA (and not really do anything there yet), which a number of IU players have.
Odds he blows that given his obvious lack of value re: education? High.
Not to mention heās barely playing. Heās not a āstar.ā Heās played in 16 games total this year. He could easily be out of the league after his first deal and will have (hopefully) another 60-70 years of life. Good luck getting a ārealā job without a degree.
Sorry. Iām still proud of players graduate and get great jobs being productive members of society outside the games. Everyone that was at alumni day yesterday graduated and is gainfully employed or retired.
Except when it comes to guys like Luke Hunger, in which case I think about his career trajectory and find myself staring at a wall for 2-3 minutes and my brain just shuts down until my body sends a jolt of adrenaline to get me going again.
Some things are better left alone.
He'll be fine. Even if he gets out of the NBA, he'll have plenty of other options for overseas basketball income.
He'll also have several million in the bank and be able to tap into friends he's made in the NBA and contacts through two universities if he needs to get his foot in whatever doors interest him. It's unlikely his lack of degree will matter in the long run unless he has ambitions that actually require one.
He's making more money than the average american makes in a lifetime each year. Most Americans also don't have college degrees.

Hunger seems to be moving backwards - and that is not enjoyable for me.
I feel bad for the guy - I hate it when our coaches can't help a player improve.
Yeah the halftime entertainment is weak. Also they could try to get someone to sing the national anthem. Usually just a recording. I was ready to give boo a nice ovation and also see the other players that came out. They did show Buie in the Jumbotron later in the game which was nice, bht yes I did not appreciate the Irish dancers! I understand why they have the kids dancing, it sells tickets to the parents and family, but that is usually reserved for the non conference games.
She was at the NBA ASG two days ago, she's in high demand.
She badly injured herself during an NBA halftime show in 2022 or 2023 and had a year long recovery process. She probably could have just hung it up and retired (she's 55), but she's back at it and nailed her first performance back last year.
I'm a little late to this conversation, but this does strike me as an odd guy to honor. He only played two years at Illinois and had one good season and one great season. But that great season had it's share of controversy with the rape accusation he dealt with. He was found innocent in that, but it's still something that did happen.
But even without the rape accusation factor, it's odd. Yes, he had a fantastic 2023-24 season and was a great player. No argument there, but he literally played the majority of his career for another university. Maybe this is just how it is in this age of transfers and guys that play for multiple schools, but I'd love to know how they decided that retiring his # (literally the year after he graduated) was something they felt like they needed to do.

Overall it just is a silly Jersey retirement. Keep doing what they are doing, and there will be no numbers left to use. Jersey retirements are for true legends. Iām thinking about some of the flyin Illini, Dee Brown, Deron Williams, etc.
