Briton Andy Warren, 56, from Swindon, and American Wyndham Lathem, 42, who teaches at Northwestern University in the US city, are wanted for the murder of 26-year-old Trenton H. James Cornell-Duranleau.

Police have launched a nationwide manhunt and a judge has issued first-degree murder arrest warrants for the men accused of repeatedly stabbing Mr Cornell-Duranleau in Lathem's luxury apartment on July 27.

Warren, a former bus driver and train buff who works in payroll at Oxford's Somerville College, is believed to have been days into his first trip to America when the murder took place.

Lathem is an associate professor of microbiology at Chicago's prestigious Northwestern University, where he is an expert in immunising against bubonic plague - better known as 'Black Death'.

This is a horrific story and parts of the following post will appear to be discussing it in a lighter vein than is warranted. Well... okay.

1. Social media has radically changed journalism. The fact that a murder suspect is a train buff would not have been included back in the day. It appears silly and out of place today.
2. This would be a much more interesting story if the murder weapon was the plague.
3. The article devoted a great deal of space to advertising for the apartment building where the murder took place including providing rental rates. I guess they figure an apartment is about to come open.
4. The NU employee and the victim knew each other. How the British guy fits in is the unusual part. It would seem logical that he had not just met the NU employee in the last few days if they escaped in tandem as is implied. However, they may have bolted in their own separate directions.
4. The adjective "prestigious" for the school is appreciated.

This is a terrible event.

However, the Daily Mail is regarded by many in the UK as the newspaper that scares the housewives of England every morning. Most of its headlines are 'over the top', warning readers of some horrible, near-catastrophic event that will soon happen (although most never do).

However, if you like celebrity news, its website is the place to go!

Just passed on the first story I saw about this, many others were behind paywalls. Okay, here is one that is accessible.

Bizarre. I'm guessing some sort of love triangle.

I doubt it. I'm guessing it's the Illuminati that are involved, and the Professor is being framed as he's onto a global conspiracy to unleash the Plague on citizens of the world, and he's the only guy who can stop them. The "murder" was self defense as they came after him, and now he is on the run, racing the clock to save the world from disaster.

The British guy coming from a European illuminati fits a missing piece to the puzzle. So the NU prof is not escaping with the British guy. He is escaping from the British guy. It is like the one-armed man running from David Janssen who was running from the law.

Yes. I know. A man is dead and this is a horrific incident and we should not be making light of it. In a few weeks when the season starts, we will have better things to do.

Ahem.

Not so much a love triangle but a dom fetish hookup gone horribly wrong.

The description of the event goes way beyond rough play. Sounds like some sort of berserker episode.

Or made to look like it went wrong. But yes, some kind of subculture nexus of sex and violence.

CHICAGO -- A Northwestern University professor and a University of Oxford employee wanted in the fatal stabbing of a Chicago man have been taken into custody in Oakland, California, a Chicago police spokesman said Friday.

Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi tweeted that Wyndham Lathem and Andrew Warren were both detained by the U.S. Marshals Service. No other details were immediately released.

Their capture was announced Friday night by Guglielmi, who credited the U.S. Marshals Service with handing the suspects to Oakland, Calif. police, CBS Chicago reports.

From the article:

"Chicago Sun-Times columnist Michael Sneed reported Thursday that Lathem and Warren drove to Lake Geneva after the slaying to donate $1,000 in the victim’s name to the Lake Geneva Public Library."

So what was that about? One of the alleged murderers is a tourist from England and a donation is made to a library in Lake Geneva? Some connection between the victim and the library?

In an update this was added:

"In a bizarre twist, police said that on the day of the slaying, but before the body had been discovered, Lathem and Warren drove about 80 miles northwest to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, where one of them made a $1,000 cash donation to the public library there in Cornell-Duranleau's name. Lake Geneva police said the man making the donation did not give his name.

"I've never seen where suspects in a homicide would make a donation in the victim's name," said Lake Geneva police Lt. Edward Gritzner."

Reading the above did bring to mind though a kidnapping and slaying that occurred in Hawaii in 1928 about which I have recently researched and written. (Territory of Hawaii vs. Myles Fukunaga). In that case the kidnapper used some of the ransom money to buy flowers for the victim's funeral.

(The crime in Hawaii was a copycat crime of a kidnapping and slaying that occurred in Chicago, the defense of which catapulted lawyer Clarence Darrow to fame [In Defense of Leopold and Loeb]. The Chicago murder, like the Lathem and Warren one, is believed to have also have had a Gay connection, although Clarence Darrow at the time was able to keep it from becoming public knowledge.

The 19 year-old kidnapper in Hawaii, in a racially charged atmosphere, was one of the last persons to be hung in Hawaii. Darrow was able to get his also youthful defendants [college students at the University of Chicago] to escape the Illinois death penalty.)
