Here’s a positive note about NU.

I’m up here in northern Michigan. I was out on Walloon Lake with my family. It is a beautiful place, and where Hemingway spent his summers as a kid.

It is customary for the docks to fly the flag of each owner’s college affiliation. Obviously there are many, many UofM & MSU flags, and a smattering of OSU, Indiana and other Big Ten flags. I didn’t expect to see one NU flag, but surprisingly driving around the lake we saw three.

One of the owners was having a campfire on the lake with his family proudly wearing a NU sweatshirt. We drove by and had a lively “Go Cats” exchange. Very nice to see that the recent scandal has not dampened all of the purple pride in northern Michigan.

We had a home on Walloon Lake (West Arm) and sold it two years ago. I had a purple & white boat canopy, an NU flag always on display and purple Adirondack chairs on the dock. Loved showing the colors in enemy territory! Our neighbor was a loyal NU fan and I gave him my dock chairs when we left. Wonder if that’s who you saw with the campfire. Have fun, what a special place.

With all the mayhem surrounding the school and the sports programs I’ve been too embarrassed to wear any of my NU clothing.

I go to Madison twice a month to visit my son and granddaughter. I’ll usually wear only NU t-shirts, jackets, etc and engage in friendly banter with the locals.

But the two times I’ve been up there since the tidal wave of mind boggling news broke I kept my purple at home. I just didn’t want to be answering questions the answers to which I don’t know.

I’ll wear my purple at all the games this season and cheer on the team. In the meantime, in the midst of this mess, I’m in hiding.

Oh come on. I wear my purple gear all the time and 95% of the alums I meet don’t even know who the coach at Northwestern is.

Granted. I live in very highly educated part of the country that doesn’t give two shots about football.

Wisconsin, however, does. They’re fanatics and at present I don’t intend to engage them or anyone else about the brewing mess.

One of the positives about living out West, no one knows about or even cares about what is or isn't happening in Evanston. Only once was I even asked about the matter and it was by a visitor to Alaska from Boston who knew I was a Cat fan.

I spent a month each of the last two summers at a rental in Bay Harbor. Loved that bike ride along the east side of Walloon—about 18 miles and 1800 ft of climbing, and stunning views from the top of Resort Pike Rd. My son caught many bass in Walloon, and we skied it a few times before dusk. Great country up north.
Mrs. GOUNUII and I are enjoying that up north great country now in Harbor Springs. Just a hop, skip and a jump from Walloon. Similar tradition of flying University flags on front porches all around town. We’ve got the typical MSU and UM flags on either side of our family home up here.

Enjoying a clear blue sky today with temps in the mid 70s and not a hint of humidity. Had a world class dinner following golf in Hidden River last night overlooking a gorgeous trout stream. Literally in what most would consider the middle of nowhere.

From May to October and then again at Christmas- there’s no place else Mrs. GOUNUII and I would rather be. Especially with our family.

Pretty certain I have seen Pasadena Bound’s old place from the water. How could any NU person miss that canopy?

He was out in the woods and he has missed it?

Even this moose that showed up in my neighborhood this week didn't seem to be bothered.

Where is this mystical land where the earth itself is very highly educated?
El Paso?

Or did you mean to write - I live in a part of the country where the people are very highly educated?

Sorry, couldn't resist.

I love it up there. As a Michigan native and current resident, I usually never get any talk from MSU and UM fans that isn't positive.
