OT: Woodson out

IU’s recent history of hiring Coaches is abysmal. I too don’t have a lot of confidence in IU getting the right Coach and then having patience with that Coach to change the culture.
Is the recent hiring of their new football coach "abysmal?" I'm asking - did something bad happen there?
Or are you talking specifically about basketball?

Indiana's AD is Scott Dolson who got the job in July of 2020. He was an internal promotion who had been at IU for 11 years in various roles, including athletic department COO. (Sounds like an accountant to me, but I don't know him).
When Dolson hired Mike Woodson out of the NBA in 2021, Dolson immediately created an Assistant AD job for Thad Matta - specifically for basketball. Apparently, Woodson had zero understanding of all the NCAA rules around running a program. Matta left for Butler in the spring of 2022.

My guess is that Indiana is going to pay big money for a top coach, like TJ Oetzelberger (although Iowa State has tried to lock him up)
Indiana is still a premium opportunity. But I do hope they screw it up yet again.

I enjoy NU's recent history with the Hoosiers and I look forward to continuing the winning. I suspect Indiana fans will never have the patience for a coach to build a consistently winning roster in the modern NCAA, unless he gets all the NIL money ever.

I am talking specifically about Indiana basketball. They are entitled to be a top 5 team in the nation, just ask them.

Dolson wanted Woody gone after last season’s epic fail, but the money people along with BOT Prez, Quinn Buckner insisted not only in keeping him, but giving him a million Buck raise…and an NIL budget over $5 million. Lots of talent purchased and little to no coaching happened…for the 2nd year in a row.

One of my all-time favorite players, Woody has been just so arrogant as HC. Surrounded himself with a bunch of “yes” men. Woody ignored Matta and didn’t even know Dane Fife, who Dolson brought in for Woody to lean on, had played for IU.

Do you guys think CCC would be interested? Probably not my first or 2nd choice, but IU could, and has done worse.

Speaking of arrogant, what an arrogant post. Indiana basketball hasn’t been relevant for years. Collins has all he needs as far as NIL at NU. But you want to know if he would be interested even though he wouldn’t be one of your top choices? When are Indiana people going to realize that the job isn’t what it used to be? 18-22 year old’s of today don’t even know what Indiana as a powerhouse looks like.

Hilarious.

Collins has all he needs as far as NIL at NU.
I mean, this is probably not true, right? I don’t know the inner workings of the NIL operation at NU, but just looking at who NU basketball picks up in the portal makes me assume NIL isn’t exactly a competitive differentiator. (Not to mention the inability to retain the best talent on the football roster, or replace them with comparable talent). Surely Collins could have a better team this year with more NIL to address Boo’s departure (in particular, a really good transfer PG)

That said, IU is a joke. The fact that they’ve been relegated to little brother in their own state is hilarious.

Yeah, he’s perfectly satisfied with NUs NIL commitment to the basketball program.

Of course it’s not as much as the Illini spend every year to bring in a brand new roster that completely underperforms and no fans have a connection to.

Thanks for the additional info about what was going on down there.
Glad you posted.

NIL situation at NU is probably not very competitive, but NU, being a private university, doesn't have to disclose anything, so people can say whatever they want.

I don’t watch Indiana all that regularly and still heard Woodson blaming the players a ton of times. That’s a terrible sign.

I said it several times before it just never felt his teams played smart ball. Multiple rosters, just bad decision making. That’s on the coach.

I am also glad for the additional info the IU poster brought here.

When Mike Woodson was a player at IU he was one of my favourite college players. I loved watching his smoothness and understated quality. Almost 50 years ago.. Not everyone is cut out to be a good HC.

If NU was limited in NIL funds they certainly aren't going forward under the new revenue sharing model. Their limitations in basketball recruiting are the same as they are in football - academics matter. Not only do the recruits need to have academic chops, they must be in a position to meet minimum course requirements to obtain a degree - and the degree is largely what it is all about for NU's recruits since they won't be getting hall passes. This has largely meant that recruits are either fresh out of HS, 2nd year transfers or grad students, all of whom must be prepared to actually attend classes along with playing basketball. Limits the pool dramatically.

Hey, Gene Hackman and Dennis Hopper didn't star in a movie named "Buckeyes"
"Wildcats" was a football movie and the coach was Goldie Hawn.

Indiana will always have that over the rest of us.

Hoosiers was kind of the anti-IU film tho, ignoring the historical inaccuracies it was small town Davids beating major-program Goliath. Good luck to them finding a coach that can produce wins to their expectations.
