How does the retirements of players work ? What does the retired kid get and how does it effect the scholarship count ?

I think that at NU, if a player cannot play any longer for medical reasons and those reasons are verified by medical staff, the team is released from holding his spot and NU finds a different kind of scholarship to finish the four years.

Others may have a better explanation than that.

The athletic scholarship is freed up when a player retires. They have to sign some waiver to the effect that they no longer are a football participant and lose all their football benefits. But I believe NU still pays medical bills for injuries sustained while a player. The student then is covered by an academic grant for the remainder of their 4 year educational matriculation.
